Ppl with dreads do wash their hair.................I should say ppl with dreads CAN wash their hair, there's nothing nasty about it the style itself, just nasty ppl out there.

I agree.. i've run ino many non dreaded peeps who smell fairly rank.. so.. the girl I commented on with the mildew smell I think that was probably cause 1. she was a white girl.. didn't have the hair texture to pull of a good dread.. and 2. I don't think she used soap when she washed her head.. it just smelled like when you leave wet clothing jumbled up in the hamper for days..

"well that's stupid. Ppl with dreads do wash their hair................."

I didn't say that they didn't wash their hair....I said that is what it makes me think when I look at it cause it just looks like one big rats nest.

Sorry if I offended anyone...it was just my opinion.

I was mildy affended, no worries.

Just ppl are quick to say Dreads are nasty, when it's actually really artistic, and takes a lot of effort to grow. My mother is a jamaican, she tried to dread her hair herself, but had such a hard time doing it, she gave up. Maybe you should find someone with dreads and take a closer look at it, or even watch how it's done, you might change your mind.

And ya, about the girl whos dreads gave you asthma Sorry to laugh, it just sounds funny. Hmm Im not sure why that happened.....but I did know a guy who was a chronic weed smoker.....His dreads always smelled like food and smoke etc. So I can see how some ppl might get scared off, but that goes with anything. There's just some dirty ppl out there.

I think it depends on the woman. Some might like them, but, personally, I don't care for them. I prefer a more clean cut in a rugged kind of way, look. Dreadlocks just look unkempt, but, that's just my opinion.

I personally find dreads to be very very sexy. But then again I've never had a "bad dread experience" never got a smell of stinky ones or had some smell like food. so my opinion is very positive, its super sexy. and i love the look and the way they feel.

I'm definately a dread fan

"I'm all for the Dreads when they are upkept nicely.. however, I knew this girl that had them.. and we happened to be out swimming and when they got wet.. the smell of them made me get asthma.. it was weird.. not sure what she was usuing on them.. but when wet they had a very strong mildew smell.."

This happens to your dreads when you wash them and don't dry them out completely. It takes 24 hours to dry usually. When you wash them and then wash them again before they're dry, they're perpetually wet inside and you get mildew inside of your dreads. It's nasty but only due to ignorance. I wash my hair two times a week and it takes me two hours each time. You just need to care for your dreads. It really has nothing to do with the 'type' of hair that's dreaded.

"that website is where i got my info at to begin with.. lol.. I'm sure there are more "educated' people in the area.. i was only saying what i had read"

Not a problem, Danigirl, but again, only if your dreads are not mature and not dreaded well i.e. a half assed job.

I have to admit, I live in farm-land and most folks here would not like them. I, personally love them!! AND you look good with them. My Nephew has them, and they touch his belt. They look good, and smell so clean at all times. He is handsome with or without them, but if he were to loose them now, he wouldn't look "right" because he has had them for years. Yes, you look quite handsome in your dreads!

Alright...... I'm a gurl and I have had dreads.... they were about to the bottom of my a***.... so they were pretty long... and yes dreads can smell and yes they can be nasty but as it has been said here already that is if you don't know what the hell you are doing and don't look after them properly...... same as with most things....... I had dreads for almost 2 years..... Mine didn't smell at all...... and I only shaved my head because I wanted to... I like to change my hair.... it was a form of expression for me.....

I love dredds I think they are cool. My ex room mate had them, she would have so many people coming up to her asking her weird questions. Her answer was always the same "Its a hairstyle not a lifestyle". They are cool, but they dont make or break a person!

I love dredds on a man..my favs are the thin ones, nicely kept. A few of my male friends with them theirs always smelled of coconut or something that smelled extremely nice..I have no idea how they took care of them or did what they did but wow. I personally wouldnt get them but hey thats just me and well dredds look better on men anyway, for ladies I think micro braids are gorgous and look so much nicer.

Many great wax products out there like 'Healthy, Sexy, Hair', 'KMS Coconut Wax', which they probably used. Dreads are very clean and can smell great. There are those who are just dirty folks though who give us all a bad name. But instead of shattering stereotypes and correcting misconceptions and myths about dreadlocks, I wanted to see what people really think with these stereotypes and misconceptions intact. Seems as if it ranges from appreciation to extreme dislike e.g. MMMBaby. Very interesting.

Dreads are the natural way the hair wants to grow, if you have kinky hair.

A lot of people get extentions mixed up with the real home grown dreads.

I've gone out with several guys with dreads and they all kept them clean and well looked after.

And it's a myth that dreads are nasty and difficult to wash.

Ja my 2 sense'worth!

Maybe it's me.. but I'm always looking for bugs in them or flying around their heads!!!

I'm sure people keep them clean.. they just do not look that way.. and I've been noticing lately these guys with knit caps that make them look like the CONE HEADS... it's their dread locks up in the caps!!!

oh well.. to each his/her own...

First, thanks for the comp. Kisimple

"Dreads are the natural way the hair wants to grow, if you have kinky hair."

Yep. That's a fact, except, its the natural way the hair wants to grow for all hair. If you don't comb your hair, dreads WILL happen. Celts, Picts, Britons, and Angles had them in the past. They were called warrior locks. Great point, dotcalm.

"A lot of people get extentions mixed up with the real home grown dreads."

Yep. They're called synth dreads. Looks great on women though. Hairpolice.com has some great photos of synth dreads.

"And it's a myth that dreads are nasty and difficult to wash."

Yep.

"Ja my 2 sense'worth!"

One love

They're called Kufe hats or Rasta caps.

Looking at it purely as a hairstyle.. generally I tend to like them. My preference is for thinner dreads, but if they are well maintained it's not a big deal.

As for those who have dirty dreads, it's not just the dreads.. it's (usually) the person. Just like those who tote greasy hair like it's some wonderful thing. Dreads are a style that requires much care, and if you can't be bothered to put in the time do us all a favour and refrain.

Good topic, vincentspage.
