I think you should dress appropriately for the occasion. I did have a 23year old tell me flat out she thought it was ridiculous for women my age to have a pierced belly button let alone have the nerve to show a little skin. She was 40-50 lbs overweight. It just may be a jealousy issue. Do you know how many college boys are hitting on me? They want a MILF!

^^^yup
I have also had people say, oh you are just naturally thin and can wear whatever you want. Geez, if you want to stay fit, you have to do something. It doesn't just happen.

I had some guy tell me that only women 24 and younger should have long hair. It amazes me that it isn't just young that think you are copying them, but some people are stuck in the mindset that being a certain age means you shouldn't wear your hair how you feel you look best. The guy who felt the need to email me about my hair has issues. I know this, but it still irks me when anyone tries to tell me how I am supposed to wear my hair or dress.

I know I'm not all that, but it is how I feel about how I look that is most important.

Going back to early in the thread (page 2 or 3??) about brooches.

Actually they are VERY trendy these days, especially when worn in 3's. They are First Lady fashion!

They aren't just for your grandma anymore (just one more of those things you can say that Yep, grandma was right!). There are ones that are cool and fashionable designs, too. I say go for it. I put mine in the center.

The same way any woman (or man) should dress, for heaven's sake! However the F@ck they wish to.

and wtf is "age appropriate" clothing...?...are there clothing stores specifically for 40 and over now...? - lady_bugg65

Oh yeah, there are. And they are easy to spot because they don't have huge display windows, for fear of scaring the customers (& other innocent passersby) to death!!
ROFLMFAO!!
And pretty much everything in the store is FUGLY!!

My favorite store in Abbotsford, mostly caters to the 20-somethings, but I don't care! I am buying some H T pink jeans this weekend!

I am a fairly fit and when I go shopping or take the kids out I dress conservatively. However my gym clothes seem the most fitted and sometimes I will go to the shops after a workout. I do see people looking at me but I figure hey I worked hard to drop a dress size recently and I'm still going.

I have tops that tend to reveal cleavage whether I plan it or not. It isn't usually intentional...................LOL.

To answer the question - OP if you want to show your belly button that's up to you. I personally don't want the world to see mine.

To the lady about the long hair.............isn't it funny? That guy was telling you he thought you should have short hair and yet men are always complaining about how older women cut their hair short and they wish they wouldn't..................ROFLMAO.

wow, well, i've gotta say that some of the 40 plusers who have already posted look fantastic and should wear anything they feel like wearing, as long as it's appropriate to the occasion (- and that's got nothing to do with age, that's just to do with manners and societal expectations)

i can't see how anyone would complain that they're 'trying to look too young', when in fact, they do look young and fitter and thinner than many others, of all types of age groups

have fun! there are already enough serious subjects that have to be dealt with solemnly to make clothing/hair a part of it, imo

"I did have a 23year old tell me flat out she thought it was ridiculous for women my age to have a pierced belly button let alone have the nerve to show a little skin."

You have to laugh at some of those younger persons who think they "look good" in their clothing that's obviously NOT suited to thier body type & say such stupid things. That 23 year old was certainly jealous, jealous, jealous!!

I say if you got it, show off that pierced belly button & a little bit of skin!
This is what 38, 39, 40, and up looks like!! You go girl!

Just for the occasion. I am so sure most places of employment have a dress code that spells out with you can and can't wear to work.Beach wear to the beach. Club wear to the club. But to dress like a s**t 24-7 is boring and yes it does sent the same message.

You want to piece and tattoo that is also a personal choice .

Another rule of thumb . Just because they make it in your size does not mean you have to buy it or wear it !

Haven't given showing your belly much thought....but off the top of my head with this question I think more people exercise than 20 years ago and they know more about shaping up, so consequences are more people have younger looking bodies. Another thought that comes to mind is the more skin you show it will conjure up sexual thoughts from "some" ....perhaps it is thought by an older age you should have many skills other than just flaunting your body to attract a man....some of the woman that frown may be experiencing much grief from being hit on all the time and don't understand why anyone would want to encourage the men to get worse and show more skin so they will think about sex even more...if you like to wear short shirt for practical purposes then perhaps it would be good to state those reasons.....modesty and shyness about the body is misunderstood in society these days....afterall adam and eve did grab the nearest fig leaf once they realized they were naked...was this the first time humans were shy?

I think the biggest problem is we now have 40 something year old women idolizing 20 year olds. Shouldn't it be the other way around??? Who the hell do these younger girls have to look up to?? Older women trying to imitate them. That's who.

There was a time when things weren't like this, and it wasn't that long ago. Somewhere along the way, women forgot how to look sexy and glamourous without looking like a stripper.

But hell, we live in a society today that glorifies this crap, and in general, women are being treated worse than ever before and feeling less respected.

I'm sure it's just coincidence, though. Right?

If you are 40 and in great shape you will have more fashion options but, as Valdar, said...don't go dressing like a 20 year old stripper - that degrades and cheapens you. That is not sexy when you are 20 IMHO. Keep your fashion current but a bit more refined. That would be my advice. I am 33, nice figure and a mother of two. I wear clothing that is very fashionable but, I'd never walk around with my belly hanging out, unless at the beach or something. There is a happy place between trendy and trashy, frumpy and fabulous...a woman in her 40's has hopefully had the time and experience to find the right mix.

To many times the problem is that those that are more mature still think that they can wear what they might have when much younger, and alas, the mind might be willing, but if the body does not match, all you end up with is a 40+ year old bulging out of their 20 year old daughters clothes.......

I have seen many posters on this particular thread that would rival any 25 year old, and being 40 or above has not taken you out of the "hot" category for being in shape, looking good, and able to wear anything you care to.......

Now, if I could only get all of you to move into my neighborhood, I bet we could have some interesting times showing off to all the youngsters that think they are so hot when it is just age that they have on their side......

Can't wait for them to come and join us, and be much more mature, and see how "slim" the pickings are then.....so to speak......

Just my opinion.......

I think its always good to have one stylish, brutally honest, friend....so that she can tell you what you DON'T see in the mirror..lol.

\/\/ Geesh, I was talking about a girlfriend..most men won't even answer the "does my a$$ look too big in this?" question..lol
Besides...a girlfriend can get away with telling you, you look like shit, a man can't. haha!

Now Tee.......Is that a girlfriend, or a friend with benefits.......lmao.....

I would agree though, that it is nice to have at least one person that is as you think you are, and works with you to be all the things you both just might want to be.....and that goes for dressing, working out, staying in shape, diet, food preparation, etc.

Shit.......I just stated what a perfect relationship would be........

Just my opinion.......

Appropriate for the occasion. I dress differently depending on if I am at work in the office, the OR, off for the day, on vacation or going to the beach or pool.

It all depends on the event.

The young adults and teenagers also gotta have their "unique identifiers" . It's just a part of being young and the ones of us that getting older need to have a fasion eye for the clothing items that the young people love...when they see someone older wearing it....there goes their uniqueness and hence a reaction "your trying to dress too young"....which can be interpretted as "hey that trendy item belongs to 25 and under only"......it's a hard subject to explain...lol....I tend to agree alot also with lot of posts here that have said that clothing choice depends ALOT...on the occassion and place etc, etc, etc....

It doesn't have to be THAT extreme but they could dress conservatively sexy. Sexy tops but not show a lot of skin and tight pants to show off their juicy round bottoms.

I don't check my birth certificate when I shop for my clothes, I dressed up funky, sexy, rugged, classic, chic , classy, and during summer I showed some skin. I don't care if other women look at me "up and down". The way I run my person is not anybody's business. Enuff said

It sounds like your opinion is that a woman should flaunt her body sexually in order to attract a man. Frankly, you will get what you invite, if you do that. Dressing in good taste rather than flaunting your cleavage or legs will lead nice men to your door. Dressing in a sleazy manner will get you lots of male attention but from all the wrong kinds of men, ones who value shallowness and see women as sex objects, not as complete people.

Thank you!! Never understood what "age appropriate" is supposed to be. If you can pull it off and look good in it go for it! I have never seen clothing as labeled "age 20-25" or "no older than 30". LMAO Don't listen to what others think is "age appropriate". I think clothing should fit the individual and that individual's personality. There are stores that I don't shop in because they specialize in a certain niche market, i.e. goth or some fringe market like that. That's not me at all! LOL Now if you watch that show "What Not to Wear", I've heard it said that no woman over 30 or so should no wear short skirts or whatever. But if you have the legs for it and feel comfortable wearing them go for it. To me, it has nothing to do with trying to reclaim youth. I show off my body and don't follow what other people say about what's age appropriate.
