How should a very fit 40 year old dress?
Posted: 6/17/2009 11:21:14 AM
Eh. I have a 28 year old friend who looks completely hideous in "young" fashions. I have a fifty year old friend who not only looks good in the "young " fashions, she looks better than many 25 year olds. Men always look her up and down, regardless of age.

"Age appropriate" was coined by bitter old women who look bad, and want to drag everyone else to their level of bitter unattractiveness. I can't shop in "old lady" stores because A. Everything is too big. B. The fabrics used in these frumpy schmattas tend to make one smell like cat pee when one sweats.

There is no "age appropriate", just what's appropriate for the occasion/venue.

Dress what you are comfortable in, but remember mutton dressed as lamb isn't a good look!

An attractive woman in a nice summer dress is going attract male attention so is a woman in a short skirt and her mid-driffed showing, it's all about the kind of attention you want to attract...

If fit, age really has much less to do with it.

I have seen many a younger woman wear what only a 100 pound or less slim thing should wear, and it looks awful on them, to tight, to many bulges not meant to be there, and way to low on their hips for the shape they have, or are in.

If you have a good body, feel free to express it, just know what you are expressing will speak volumes about who and what you are, and just what you might want as well....

Just my opinion......

a gunny sack..................... only because I KNOW I will be jealous.

Hell fire woman, ya got it , flaunt it, there is a difference between dressing skimpy and dressing trashy, I am sure you know the difference. Don't wear clothes 2 sizes to small, wear what is comfortable, and allows you to show off your assets with taste.

I have a lovely friend (44) who belly dances and looks great! If you got it, show it!

I do agree there is age and contextual appropriateness to your dress. By 40 I'd expect you have that figured out (bikini top at the beach = good, at work = not so good!) Show off your good taste!

I think it helps to have a "look" that defines you. That way, you can be consistent, and not worry about the age factor so much. To me, the biggest question is, is it flattering? If it is, then I don't care how short or how low-cut it is- I know what's appropriate for different situations and occasions.

I heard someone say that women over 35 should never wear skirts above the knee. I'm sorry, but that's just arbitrary and ridiculous. I've got nice legs, and as long as they stay nice, I'm gonna show them off. I'm not going to start looking like a 20-year-0ld club-goer, but I don't need to start looking matronly either. I tend to the conservative anyway, so have a tendency toward the feminine and demure; it's just fun to spice it up a bit!

That being said, I AM a bit leery of being "mutton dressed as lamb," so I always keep in mind that I'm not trying to relive my teenage years; I just want to look good now.

Fvck what other women think. They're jealous of the fact that you have a better body than they do.

Please yourself...and any man you're trying to attract. I say, feel sexy, or feel the way YOU WANT to feel, at ANY age. Better than feeling like someone else's frumpy fuddy-duddy friend.

Unless you're at the gym or at the beach, bare belly is alluring through a sheer tasteful top.

"How should a very fit 40 year old dress?" Lets see........hmmmmmm........look to your left and you tell me. Or better yet come to my profile and check out a soon to be 44 yo grandmother of 5 who power walks 3 miles every single morning and you tell me then what you think.

I think a woman should be able to dress in whatever she wants to. Since women are our own worst critics any way. If we are comfortable in what we are wearing then hey wear them booty shorts girl.....show that clevage woman....but like yourself in what you are wearing and noone else's opinion really matters.

Classy. If you do a mini skirt, wear any other material besides demin if it's at night and the shirt should cover the shoulders. In the day demin is ok with a not so tight shirt. even though I have big beautiful TahTahs, I don't show them off everywhere I go. Only a little bit when I'm out on a date or out at night. Its a thin line between classy and trashy.. If you know younger women in their early twenties, they will be able to define that line for you..

I dress according to the occasion. If I'm in a club, I wear club clothes that accent the good stuff and hide the flaws. If I'm at work, I dress conservatively, as clients expect me to present a professional appearance. When going shopping, I wear casual clothes that flatter me and make me feel good.
I love to dress in different styles. I have a varied wardrobe, and I pick and choose considering my mood and what I plan to do that day.
My age has never bothered me...I have always dressed like I do. The only time I think some women should tone down the tramp factor, even the ones with good bodies, is when their faces don't match the body. I have seen some women with awesome figures wearing very revealing clothing that looked really great, until you got up close and saw the leather, overtanned skin, caked on makeup, and wrinkles that outshone the cosmetics.
I also think that women who overdo the lip plumping (and end up looking like goldfish), have way too much botox and resurfacing, and eye lifts that end up making their eyebrows end up in the middle of their forehead should have been a lot more careful about what they did to attain that youthful look( or so they think). I feel sorry for these women, because they really have no idea how freakish they look. When you couple that with tiny tops and super short mini's and stilletoes, it ends up looking desperate and sad.
Be realistic about what you look like, and dress accordingly in a way that makes you look and feel your best. It's not about how old you are, it's about how you look and carry yourself.

Nothing wrong with showing your belly button. The only thing is though - showing your midriff has been out of fashion for like 5 years at least. It's better to stay current.

Dress in whatever makes you feel classy and beautiful. Sometimes sexy, sometimes sporty...whatever. What does age have to do with it???

One of my favortie outfits is my tennis dress and tennis shoes...on the court, and sometimes off...

tennis anyone???!

My mother started dressing in short skirts, low cut tops and such when my parents divorced. She was 41. She had a better figure at that time than I've ever had, but that didn't matter. It still looked out of place at best, trashy at worst, and most importantly - it made her look older, not younger.
Somehow it only emphasized the fact that, despite her great figure, she was not a young girl anymore.
One's face (from the wrinles on it, to the expression on it) the way you carry yourself, what you say and the way you speak, and all kinds of other things are still there regardless of your fitness, and dressing in clothes for a 20 year old just makes the difference more obvious.
Eventually my Mom saw that, and changed her clothes a little. It doesn't mean older women have to wear grandma clothes at all. There is a happy medium between strapless babydoll dresses and the like, and granny pants. There are lots of clothes that make a woman look sexy without being too revealing, or following every new trend for young people and so on.

How about you simply be yourself? Dress the way you feel comfortable. If a guy or anyone else has a problem with it, then you are not a match. Simple
