kf6qoj, I was not going to participate any discussions today since this is a national mourning day in Finland but your post was so hilarious I want to comment some things about it ;)

I see you are from the US... Ok, so I will use your country as a criteria.

True, Finland is really small country :) and our voice is not heard very often. Internationally only and mostly on the peace work.
But your statement about Finland being 3rd world country :p Well, being that would not make us less important, or what? :) Still we managed to beat the US 2004 on several things. For example the most competitive country in the world (the US was the second one, Bush has not been that great for your economics), number one what becomes to be clean from corruption... maybe minor things... hmmmm, what else... yes: at least our Nokia is still number one, Motorola is not doing that well... Linux is giving nice competition to Microsoft, at least manage to be like a pain is *ss. This might be totally irrelevant to you but as a female I appriciate a lot the fact we are more advanced what becomes to equality between men and women.

Does size matter that much after all? ;) To Bush it seems to matter.

Part of a news report on Finland:

A world leader

Finnish researchers are at the leading edge of developments in a number of fields, including forest improvement, new materials, the environment, neural networks, low-temperature physics, brain research, biotechnology, genetic technology and of course communications. Their results speak for themselves. The neural network concept developed by Professor Teuvo Kohonen, for example, is probably the single most widely disseminated Finnish scientific achievement to date.

The main fields of Finnish industry are metal and engineering, forest products, and information and communications technology. Inventions and product development work have spawned numerous important and innovative new products. Areas in which Finnish engineers and companies have made a major international mark include such diverse products as mobile phones, icebreakers, cruise liners, lifts, paper machines, environment-friendly paper manufacturing processes, diesel engines, sailing yachts, compasses, fishing lures, frequency transformers, rock drills, tree harvesters, contraceptives, pipettes, and scissors and axes, together with Internet encryption systems and numerous other products of forestry, engineering, and information and communications technology.

In the latter area, particular mention should be given to the Linux operating system developed by Linus Torvalds. In 2003, the private and public sectors in Finland invested around five billion euros in research and product development, equivalent to approximately 3.5 per cent of the GDP. Relatively, it is at the top level in the world.

Hi ousu,

Nice to see you again. You are such a positive force. Your daughter's grades still bad enough for her to be considering politics?

Hi Poetic, she starts to be convinced she really needs to start to study if she wants to have a political career here. She starts to blame me I made her in the wrong country.

I was thinking a bit about this Bush and goverment thing... I really do believe Mr Bush would be wiser if putting more effort on social sector and education. Now his decisions are very narrow short-term interests based. Like he would not be interested what will happen in future, just what looks good at this very moment.

ousu,

what looks good at this very moment may be hard to find in that equation. Yes, there definitely should be more emphasis on education and other aspects of life.

Maybe things will improve all over, though. We can always hope...

PP, In fact I am positive with that! That things will improve. Maybe it needs some (economically, for example) hard times in order to make people to change their attitude. If the US economics will get into really bad shape in a decade, two... it might teach people to co-operate and revalue their life and living. Maybe Bush is doing a favour to people???

Ousu,

Many empires have crumbled for overextending themselves. You cannot forever spend money on things that do not pay dividends back, that's for sure. And some things take away and do not replace much.

So it is not then just Bush... but the current situation? Bush is an easy target now since he happens to be in power, and his public statements have been that irritating it is easy to dislike him.
I still point at the fact many leaders when long enough in power become arrogant and start to believe they are right and everything depends on their acts. How many of this kind of leaders have had it hard to give up because they have truly believed the empire will collapse if they are not controlling it! (And in Bush's case you could count there a longer period than his being president. He got in touched with power already before via his family. Has he ever lived so called normal life?) Also when there is no real threat for them, they do not need to listen the other's opinion. Omnipotency is a disease :)
If you have ever done sports and been pretty good in it, you know the feeling of power. Makes a person unreasonable and unfair towards the others. I believe one gets similar kind of "kicks" from politics.

kf6 says to Ousu: "Give me a break. Perhaps there are a few Finlanders who visit here but surely the numbers are insignificant. What does Finland contribute to the world? Sorry, I can't think of anything. When was the last time Finland was in the news for ANYTHING? They are a small, third world country, that remains pretty much neutral, as it should be."

I say to kf6: Finland is a peaceful land. I've been there. Have you? Sure it's smaller than the U.S. But size is not what we're measuring here. (As I'm sure you know, size is not what matters). Finland is beautiful. Its people are highly educated. It's a live-and-let-live country, where people don't have to fear being attacked, discriminated against, imprisoned, and even killed for being different or unique (unlike here). Finland is civilized and has no death penalty (unlike here). It's incredibly modern, yet historical, and protects its history and identity (unlike here, where everything is torn down and built over, polluted and turned into crap). It is a country where one will not encounter the throngs of homeless and poor we do here (despite our attempts to ship them out to where they won't be visible). Finns don't have to worry about ending up jobless and on the street, with cancer and no insurance, old and having to work at a supermarket bagging groceries to survive. Americans are the ones that have to worry about those things.

The U.S. provides a miserable lifestyle for all but the rich, mega-rich and mega-mega-rich. Most people in this country live dependant upon credit, credit cards, the check-to-mouth technique of life, or simply in a cardboard box. With the exception of the rich, the U.S. provides zero security. Zip. Nada. Zilch. A hell of a country to brag about! Which is why we have to make sure to stop the Republicans. They turned it into that. They're determined to keep it like trash, and making it even worse. We must vote out every Republican bottomfeeder in the U.S. out of office.

ousu: No nation in the history of the world had so thoroughly dominated the world economically and politically before Bush came to office. That's a fact.

Now, we're in a state of free fall. Other nations are finding out (after HAVING to do so from necessity) that they can tell us "no" and not face serious repercussions. In fact, it solidifies political power in many countries if they do so.

Why?

Because Bush is incompetent as a leader, a statesman, an architect of international policy and a negotiator.

The greatest political and economic strength the US had before was leadership in international cooperation. When WE came out ahead; EVERYONE came out ahead.

Not any more...

There are arrogant people in all walks of life, I would think. But the old axiom that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely is likely very true.

In Canada, we have had politicians who hung on way too long. Our last Prime Minister was an example of that. Even when his own party caucus was asking him to step down, he refused.

There is a certain ego thing in being the top person in the cuntry, or maybe the world.

Also, people who are multi-millionaires can hardly relate to the everyday population. They are disconnected and after awhile feel next to nothing for others, despite what the speech writers put on paper for them to read.

Politicians in Canada only need to hold office for eight years to have lifelong pensions, which are quite high. And some politicians become extremely well-connected, too. One of our former Premiers is said to have his hand in over 50% of all major business dealings in Eastern
Canada. Sitting on dozens of boards, he gets exorbitant sums of money. Sometimes I'm sure where ethics are in certain things...

Oh well, things will get better. They have to, don't they?

Thanks, Sarah :))))) (But we of course Finland has also its bad sides... we drink a lot :p and we are a bit moroses ;)

- I believe a good gauge of well-being is the size of middle class... Interesting what you said about living upon credit. This is exactly what economists are warning when talking about Bush tax cuts (tricks)... the long term influence will be chatastrophical, and will have influence on individuals' life in future.

Furthermore: If you don't think the other nations blowing the US's original Tsunami relief pledge out of the water was a political statement having to do with the vacuum in world leadership, think again.

Bush authorizes 35 million from the US to help nations recover from the loss of over 100,000 inhabitants and the terrible affects of the tidal wave.

Sheeeeit...HE doesn't even have to go to Congress to get that money!!!

Bush (and any US president) has a discretionary "US President" fund that contains over ONE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS to fight a war or any other d*mned thing that comes up!!!

Next day, Canada outpledges us with 40 million... then Japan.. etc, etc...

Today Bush upped it to 350 million or something like that. If you think that was out of shame; think again. He has none. It's only about political pressure and his stupidity.

Americans; YOU picked a dope to lead. I didn't. I'm proud of that.

Elwood, so true... and this kind of situation has become possible since there is no other super power anymore. And I do agree 100% what becomes Bush's ability to act as a statesman. There was a funny article examining the happenings of 2004. One of the things said was that this was the first time Finland lost in the elections of the US (whcih reflects quite a lot the public opinion in many European countries): 9/10 was against Bush. But more alarming thing studied was that with Bush administration the US is almost as hated as Russia - and that's a lot. Sad since the US was seen before in so much more positive way.

Prince -

How come such a royal as yourself has no princess?

I picture you walking arm in arm with your princess, both all elegantly dressed, being announced by the Grand Master of Ceremonies as you enter the beautiful banquet.

Hi Ousu -

I know Finns drink a lot. In fact, I was on a train when 2 Finns began drinking down shots of Vodka. I thought I would have to carry them out. However, they walked out as normally as if they'd just been drinking Coke. It was too funny.

About Bush and the effects of sick Republican-Reaganist policy upon the U.S., I agree with you. It's already destroying the U.S., but they don't care. They're too stupid to care, I think.

If nothing else, I love having you two writing up a storm like that, even if it goes against the family values of Mr. Bush, no doubt, you know women expected to be in the kitchen, bare-footed et al...

Keep writing. I love it!

Ah, yes those family values - is it really question about real family values when women are wanted to stay in the kitchen? ;)
IMHO some weaker males are just afraid of competition on certain fields when females come out from kitchens. (E.g. more candidates for a post.) To be a woman is getting through a redefinition, so it is needed to redefined what it is to be a man / what family means.

The old school was that women were to stay home and be quiet. In fact, some people's good book even advocated that, which made for the confused and pititufl stand taken by so many zealots.

I think women shine and outshine men often, and if men can't take that heat, maybe they ought to stay in the kitchen, eh...
