One of my most embarrassing moments as a teenager took place while riding a school bus. I had been sitting next to this sullen, black-haired, girl for about six months. When she finally broke her silence she asked, "Are those dead chickens hanging from your clothesline?"

Yes. Our family raised, killed and butchered a plethora of animals while we lived on an acre of land in Nova Scotia. It was the economical way to feed a family. As a result I developed a wide range of transferable skills. I can dig for clams (and find them), pluck chickens, butcher cows (and venison), fillet a fish, "dress" rabbits, and de-bone poultry with my bare hands.

I have to admit, I'm not sure if I should be depressed or proud about that last one...

I grew up on a 2000 acre ranch. We butchered one steer, two hogs and a hundred chickens every year. We also hunted deer too.

I thought everyone did their own butchering when I was a kid. When we moved into the suburbs I could not believe how no one butchered or canned food.

When I saw huge yards with no garden I thought they were nuts. All the best food is home grown, meat or veggies.

One of the biggest shocks of my life was watching a woman who did not know how to cut a chicken. I thought everyone could cut up a chicken.

my adopted grand daughter thought beefsteak tomatoes was where beef came from. She is 13. She has a good excuse. Her real mom told her that reading was stupid and learning was stupid. She is really getting an education now! Her new dad is knowledgable in just about everything. So am I.

When I was at cartwrights meat store they were cutting up a hog. the buy locally raised hogs. The door to where they were cutting the hog up was open. I well dressed lady looked and and promptly fainted.

Meats that are raised by you are a lot better quality meat. You also know exactly how fresh the meat is. You also get the entire body instead of just a steak or two at the grocery store. Cost wise raising and butchering your own meat is a lot cheaper than buying questionable meats in a store.
