How many women would want to live on a farm?Page 3 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
Reason for asking this question on a forum was to get some input on the topic. Just to let you know my farming background. My grandfather was a farmer and my father was a farmer who left for the city when he was teenager. Growing up use to spend time on my grandfather's farm. Even been involved in the haying and watched animals being slaughter. This was till I reached a certain age. Then around 14 spent one week on a dairy farm and helped out. This is where I knew about the 6 AM milking. There would be over 100 dairy cows. Cannot remember the number but if I am correct it was in the range of 250 dairy cows. With dairy you need a quota and it is a real commitment. You cannot forget the 6 AM milking or your cow can go dry. Dairy includes auto matic milking machines but there is still a lot of labour involved. Even though the cows would meet you at the barn door. You still have to disinfect the utter and connect the fingers onto the nipples. After, you have to clean the barn floor of the manure for the afternoon milking. Yes you have to go through the process twice. When I reached an age of 16 and had my first car on the road I managed to get a job on a poultry farm. Achieved it through Mohawk College. What I mean is I made the connection through Mohawk College's help get a student a summer job. The job was suppose to only be to help shovel out the chicken barns. That job ended up lasting two years. The manager of the place was teaching me every aspect of the chicken business. See the farm also doubled as a killing plant. Where they would slaughter up to 700 chickens on a typical day. I seen that place go from everyone working 5 days/week down to 3 days/week. Was involved in building outbuilding and tearing down old ones. Re insulating the barn walls. Raising chickens to slaughtering them. Even going to the neighbouring farms to catch chickens. At one time I knew where every chicken farm was in the Niagra region. A farm can only survive with the help of others. It becomes a community of its own. The only thing that my boss was unwilling to teach me was the books of the place. You know doing the daily schedule, doing the calling to arrange for chickens to be caught, etc. He use to joke telling me that he was just protecting his job from me. During this time I was also attending highschool full time and keeping a social life going. Manage to get some work for friends from time to time. One friend even manage to get full time hours for awhile and met his wife and now has 4 children where one I believe is close to finishing high school. At one point we even discussed purchasing the place when it was up for sale. But what bank would lend teenagers money to purchase a farm. Guess what I am trying to say is that I know the hard work associated with a farm and it is not everyones cup of tea. Also to add, with my job today I am finding that more of the farmers now a days have come from the city. Seems that some of the people who was raised on a farm urn the city life and the ones raised in the city vice a versa. I have been fortunate to be exposed to both lifes. But I know the city more for spending more time in one. Therefore, I am not niave to the farming life or the work involved with one. You either love it or hate it. But once again I am at a stage in my life where I would like to give it a try. One thing about farming. You do not need to belong to a health club like in the city. There is enough excercise on a farm to keep a person in shape. This post was just to inform people where I am coming with the question that I have asked. Unfortunately most of the people who replied are from the US. Hope this forum has indirectly helped a few other men searching.

Wow if there are so many women who want to live in the country why is it so hard to actually find one. I live on a small 500 acre ranch and raise beef type cattle theres no gettin up at 6 am to milk em either. I've liveed here most of my life and my grandfather was one of the orignall farmer-ranchers here. But to find a woman who actually likes livin a 20 min drive to the nearest conveniance store is almost impossable.

Oh and to mustang already have a 35x75 shop even installing lift next year lol.

I'm late, but what the heck... Farm girl born and raised. Loved it. Still love going home and helping with the harvest. Ok, my help is all done in the kitchen, but someone's gotta feed 'em.

I probably made a mistake with the career I chose, but I love what I do now too. There are times when I miss that farm life though.

The city drives me nuts, but where does a girl find a nice farmer????

A small hobby farm would be nice. I could save money on boading my two horses. I love the country and horses are not that smelly or all that much work.

I'd love to meet a farmer that I was compatible with.

I would! And, I can work a barn, & so can both of my children! We have experience with but not limited to the following: We can feed, water, grain, bathe, groom & trim manes. Can also braid tails of horses & ponies. I'll pick out horse feet if I have to, but I prefer not to. We can let the horses & ponies out, several at once, into the arena to excercise, we can also ride! My daughter was a trail guide, & can also ride bareback, & has done so at night. I'm sure I would fall off if I tried that. We also have experience w/dogs goats, pigs, Pot Belly pigs, chickens, roosters, barn cats, mice, snakes, & probably some other critters that I'm forgetting at the moment. I wouldn't miss the city at all. As long as I had my own horse, & my daughter had her own too, I'm happy as a pig in mud!

I am living out in farm country right now, & i am not fond of it.
I moved out to a more country-esque part of Florida to put my kids in one of the best schools the state has to offer.
I would rather be back in Key West or Miami. I miss living on the islands living the tropical life, with weekend trips to Maimi to enjoy the big city.

It just isnt for everybody. I crave the city & the islands.

But, it has it's good points. I found a large, lovely, Grecian style home with a humungous yard that i adore. My kids are getting a top notch education in a brand new state of the art school. We are closer to Disney World, & i have gotten myself & my children annual passes, we are close to Daytona Beach, we have some amazing natural Springs and nature trails, and i have made some amazing friends. As nice as it is though, i cant picture myself being here forever, though.

Just a question to find out how many women would leave where they live to move out to the rurals and live on a farm?
No thanks. I could live away from the city, but not to far from it--would want to be able to get to town within about 45 minutes. But no, I would not want to live on a farm.

Well...I do have a small farm and have worked hard at it all my life plus having full time jobs...loved the lifestyle. Sadly it is up for sale now...just too much work alone! I am a little comprhensive on whether I'll enjoy living in the city but look at it as another phase of life...
How's the saying go..Can take the "girl" out of the country but can never take the "country" out of the girl.

I would under certain conditions...

I'd have to be close enough to some "city" stuff. There would have to be a social community near the farm & I wouldn't be doing heavy labor. I'm an older woman. I would love to downsize & live a "greener lifestyle", & love tiny houses- I've even read the humanure handbook ;0)

Of course it wouldn't hurt to have a strapping hunk (albeit middle-aged) who would wear overalls (nothing underneath) & take me for a tumble in the hayloft

My ex-husband's family had a farm that has been passed through generations. Being the eldest child, he was first in line to inherit the farm once his dad retired. They raised 100 head of horses around 1000 head of hog and planted and harvested approximately 400 acres of corn and soybeans every year. I always liked the idea of living on the farm because of the wide open spaces, and the four-wheeler, of course, but I didn't like that on nice days you couldn't have the windows open if the wind was blowing a certain way otherwise the house would smell like farm animals or that you had to have 300 things on your shopping list to justify driving into town. I like city life...the grocery store is walking distance, there's a convenience store open all night right across the street, and downtown is just a short drive away.

I would, the further away from any big city the better. I am tired of the discontent people have for their neighbors, their communities, and for real communication. I say throw out the cell phones and put me in a better place I would love it.

I work in a small town and many of my coworkers are also farmers or were brought up in that lifestyle. I can't count how many times I have had to sit there and listen to stuff that I have no way to relate to. It just isn't my thing and would never work for me.

I live in an area with farms all around - yet I'm very near town. Best of both worlds - so no need/desire to move !

i would love to live on a farm! an organic herb and vegetable farm, specifically.

and i'd have to have a few barn cats, a couple more in the house and 2-3 that kind of do both. and a few mustangs. and maybe a couple icelandic horses. all rescues, of course. and some fainting goats.

i love barns and fields and gardens and tractors and compost.

so, yeah, count me in.
