Is it sinful for a man to have long hair?
Yes...but I can't back it up.

I was involved in the Jesus movement in the early 70s and many Churches had problems with all of us long haired hippie types that were professing Jesus. I heard from more than one person at the time that my shoulder length hair was an abomination. I think most Churches have lightened up since that time. The verse in Corinthians about "nature itself teaches that it is a shame for men to have long hair" is referring to "tresses" or maybe "braids" in the original language. I have no idea if this is true or not. Elsewhere in the Bible it states that "Man looks on the outward appearance but God looks at the heart" so it would appear that God is not too concerned with it.

Glad to hear that long hair is making a comeback. I am so tired of that shaved head look. Always reminded me of serial killers.

Okay, I don't plan on reading the rest of this, although I started to, and this is probably going to be my one and only post, but I have a POV. And long hair, but whatever. I was hanging with one of my extra moms one day, and we got to talking doctrine and dogma. She's Apostolic Christian, and got into some of the secular traditions, talking about the Nazarites and the Nazarenes and the hair issue. She explained it pretty well, I thought, but it still seems to me to be basing a significant point of religious practice on a two-thousand-plus-year-old fashion statement. Honestly, to me, that's a little ridiculous, if not extreme. $.02

Sorry Bluemystery. Didn't mean any offence but when I was growing up in the 70s, serial killers were about the only ones who sported the shaved head look. I am a product of a different era.

It is NOT a sin. Jesus had long hair...most did back then. The only reason that christians of today look down on men with long hair is because of 1950s morals where young men were meant to sport the crew cut made popular by 2 world wars. Long hair was the norm before 1914 going all the way back to the beginning of time. In the 1960s men rebelled against this forced carbon copy image and grew out their hair. this angered many who felt that everyone should conform. long hair stereotypes were made and they were shunned by the conservative society. But in reality men having long hair is probably closer to what Jesus had. Do you think he went around with an army crew cut?
Too many hard line Christians like to find a reason for not accepting someone. judge a man by his character not by his appearance.

I agree with Kitsguy, Judge a man and woman by their character and not by their appearance. It isn't a sin in my view i think Paul was making just a statment of preferability or something but it is NOT a sin for a man to have long hair or a woman to have short.

It is not about how you look (at least as it relates to hair) ESPECIALLY WITH REGARDS TO HOW GOD SEES US!!!

It don't matter if you have long hair or have short hair or are bald or whatever, it is not a sin as long as you don't have any evil intentions with it, it is just a LOOK!!!

God from my understanding cares about the character and i would suggest that we do too!!!!

I am serious about that you know, the fact that it is nothing with regards to hair really. It doesn't matter!! We ought to be nice and beautiful inside.

ALSO- Samson along with David and John the Baptist were part of a cast of people specifically for the purpose to serve God and thats why they had there hair longer. It had nothing at all to do with power.

When Samson SINNED he lost his power not because his hair came off.

Just wanted to clarify that for those that are mistaken.

I used to go to a Baptist church in Hammond Indiana where the preacher Jack Hyles wrote a book entitled "Jesus had short hair.." I don't know who had what I wasn't there but I have long hair..I don't think there's anything wrong with it. God is Love...

I agree Byrd. God IS love and would love you no matter what you looked like. It isn't about the outside of the cup but the inside. (wow forgot the verse that's associated with that)

1st Corinithians Chapter 11:vs 13-16

13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long HAIR, it is a shame unto him?
15 But if a woman have long HAIR, it is a glory to her: for her HAIR is given her for a covering.
16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

In this epistle of Paul,I think he's saying for people to ask themselves and judge accordingly.I know some look at it as effeminate and in the religion I grew up any form of effeminate mannerisms and ways in men were seriously frowned upon.I remember back in the 60's and 70's preachers had a field day with hair and clothing styles of the time.Today's piercings and tatoos have replaced long hair on guys sermons.

I once heard a preacher utter this blooper,"Now Delilah cut Tarzan's hair..."

What is more vain? The action of not cutting your hair because its not what you want to do perhaps indicating you are a non-comformist or cutting you hair in order to fit in so you won't be seen as that 'type'?.

I think both actions could be construed as vain depending on your point of view. Personally I think long hair on a guy is attractive. I've met a lot more vain men with short hair than ones with long hair.

1st Corinithians Chapter 11:vs 13-16

These are the rules for worship, and take part of the last supper.

Unkempt hair was equated with adultery.
But ask yourselves if it is proper..not really a good disscussion.
Everyone is inescapably affected by the culture in which they live.

1 Cor 11.13-16

Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?

Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

I was even talking with my mom about this thread to see if it was a sin or not, and we both agree that it is even a cultural thing back then.
