In most cases its unasked for or uninvited and that is totally unacceptable!
When it is asked for its usually in the context of a BDSM relationship. The Sadist
humiliating the masocist. Often the masocist is a surviror of severe physical and emotional abuse and is left in a state where pain and/or humiliation is the only way they can feel comfortable with enjoying sex.
I don't think in any case its a positive force in developing self esteem.
