| What do you consider a single parent. Posted: 3/7/2007 10:49:56 AM |
4 years without a date is a walk in the park. 4 years of women, and no daughter = kill me.
I feel the same way about my daughter, and I am happy to see that you are so dedicated to your child!
A single parent in my opinion is someone who's single, but actually plays an active parenting role in their childs life (money, seeing them, etc...)
this is a topic that could go on for eternity! everyone has different views!

I can agree with that Pinklollipop. I am fortunate enough to have an ex who loves our son dearly. He pays his child support ontime every month and occassionally helps out if something extra was needed like birthday expenses etc. He also has him 2 weekends a month and sees him a few hours every wednesday night.
No matter what my view is of my ex as far as husband quality goes, he is still a good dad and he is a single father in my eyes.

| What do you consider a single parent. Posted: 3/8/2007 10:13:35 AM | | I have read a lot of these posts about SP's and I have a question....For those of you that say a SP is a parent who has thier children full time would I consider my self a part time parent? I have my children 4 days out of the week and my ex has them 3 and I have always considered myself a single parent. I make choices for them, I but all that they need (winter clothes, summer things...)I am the parent that takes them on outings(Marineland in the summer, movies, ANYWHERE). Just wondering | |

| What do you consider a single parent. Posted: 3/8/2007 5:29:57 PM | Hi
If that is the way your son's other parent is, taking drugs, then I would only recommend only 'supervised access', providing that he biological dad is not on toxic drugs, meaning that your child should not be exposed to that kind of behaviour. The boy should have a positive male role model, or positive role model who is a woman...it is just that the stats regarding the effect of fatherless boys includes those boys who are unfortunately lacking a positive role model....that is why it is vital that when a boy, or girl reaches puberty or earlier that they have a positive role model, not a poor role model, which in some cases is an older boy who in turn has a negative role model, which is often an older brother who did not have a postive role model. "The sins of the father are visited apon by the sons." or Something like that.
There are many examples of moms who serve as positive role models for their sons at any age, including my grandmother who left my grandfather in 1961 and raised three sons, without any help from him, since he was a alcoholic with great promise and demonstrated ability: he was a man that was prime contractor in building many of the fine institutions we still use daily in BC, from Kitimat to Oliver, BC...U see my grandfather was from Sweden and spent considerable time in 'reform school' and because of that had some very poor role models when he was a teen, and U know the stats on drinking in Sweden. But he was never violent or a smoozzer, just a buzzer. The things he could to with his hands astonished me: he received a thorough training in carpentry and construction in Sweden, but how he got into reform school is still a mystery to me. He as also an Opera Singer.
Another poor parent we may know well was Margaret Laurence, the famous Canadian Author, she abondoned her kids after some years, and drank, partied, but wrote some of the most incredible fiction....she was addicted to introspection and writing, so was not fully capable of parenting....but her kids probably adored her...I don't know, but the daughter of Heminingway, Muriel, also adored her father, you know Ernest Hemenway? He lived in Idaho in the end, and used to fish for steel head at Spences Bridge besides reducing the lion population in Kenya for sport.

| What do you consider a single parent. Posted: 3/8/2007 7:01:44 PM | I consider myself a single parent. I have full legal and physical custody of my two kids ages 7 and 5. Their Dad signed them over to me without blinking an eye in our uncontested divorce in 2004. He rarely calls to see them, and when he does make plans to see them, he usually cancels.
Child Support? Whats that? I've only gotten a few dollars a couple of times. (The State tracks him down, then I get a check, and then he changes jobs, or goes without a job for a long time.)
But, I can't complain. I am very blessed to have 2 very happy healthy kids. We have soooo much fun together. They are my life, and I am theirs. They give me reason to keep going when it gets tough, and they keep me smiling!
Anyway, thats a single parent to me. No help from the other parent. I rely on my Mom and sitters and Day care.

| What do you consider a single parent. Posted: 3/9/2007 6:05:54 AM | Has it really come to this? Is the 'Single Parent" status something people want to fight for? I have 3 kids, and I am divorced, and I am a Mom, and a provider and a displinarian. My ex still see's the kids, but not so good at providing or being the disiplanarion. Frankly, not much has changed since we got divorced. I think any caring responsible parent would do what is needed for their children to grow up healthy...whether they are married or not! To me this sounds like a pity thread for single parents to garner sympathy pats on the back! The parents who deserve the biggest kudos...are the ones who don't keep score or complain. For those of you who are struggling with not much help, I can sympathize with you...but my question to some of you who complain about your circumstances....is...if you had the chance....would you wipe the slate clean and choose not to have your kids if you had the chance to go back in time? To me this is a silly superficial thread intended to boost the OP's ego. I want you all to remember something...there is always 3 sides to every story...his side...her side...and somewhere in the middle is the truth! | |

| What do you consider a single parent. Posted: 3/9/2007 3:41:48 PM | A single parent is a parent who is alone and provides the "permanent" residence for the child...In most situations the child even if he alternates between parents have a permanent address....
There are single parents who are so because they choose to have their children alone then there are the ones who are put in that situation because they have no choice either by divorce or their spouses death, sometimes the father divorces the children also....
the main point should be to ensure that the child/children are given love, stability, and understanding.....no matter how many parents they have....

| What do you consider a single parent. Posted: 3/9/2007 4:25:53 PM | great post babs!!
there is being proud... and gloating.
being proud is commendable and well deserving of a pat on the back. Gloating is cruel and reminds me of a school yard priss..I GOT SOMETHING YOU DONT GOT
Im very proud of what I have..considering where I have been, seen and experienced along my broken path to happiness.
I dont go shoving it in my exes face though. Thats childish. The best and most grown up way of seeking revenge is to do way better than the other.. be successful and for gods sake BE HAPPIER! that to me is far more important than slinging insults and gloating to the world IM BETTER THAN HE -SHE IS BECAUSE........................
I am guilty of doing it without thinking about it.. then I realized hmmmm he already knows im better HES SEES ME LIVING IT!!
