Posted: 5/7/2008 6:33:44 AM | | ya well i have said age is only a number. the part i left out is age is only a number until the number is way off. 18 and 40 is absurd. 12 yrs off sure but 22 no. complete insanity. although i know a young lady who is almost 30 yrs younger than her husband and they have a great marriage . so sometimes it does work out. only in this case the woman is the younger. the reason i think their relationshiop is working is becaues women use emotion to stay. however if the man is younger..the man would stray becaue the physical attraction will be gone. | |

The woman is at the height of her beauty power, and will be for about the next decade or fifteen years. The man is likely at the height of his earning power, or close to it, and with any luck will be for the ensuing period also. So it looks like a mate value match to me, which is when things go best.
And Kitten is right, it only works in the older man + younger woman direction. | |

Child? An 18-year-old is not a child in technical, medical, or legal definition. Often people alter definitions to try to make their weak point stronger.

Is a 19-year-old a "child"? How about 20, 21, 22? Where in your infinate wisdome do you think someone becomes a "non-child"? Do you recommend that 40-year-olds only date and possibly marry 38-year-old women need an extra 20 years to come out of childhood?

The younger spouse reaches their forties and feels as though they are taking care of a parent, they feel tied down as the older spouse slows down and the older spouse can't help but wonder how they are holding the younger one back. On the best of days relationships are work, to make it harder with an age, race , nationality or religious difference adds to the work. I think the bigger issue is how will these differences affect any resulting children. I'm not expressing exclusivity in sameness in relationships but life is what it is. We have a tendency to live in the moment . . . I'm not promoting arranged marriages but there is an argument for the voice of wisdom.

Seriously, a guy of 40 falling for a 18 yr old girl is seriously fukked in the head.....sounds pretty delusional to me.
But, what do you expect from a guy who fails to grow up and refuses to let go of his own youth...

And sorry men don't mature as fast as women...most men don't grow up until 30 to 35...most by time they hit 25-26. That's why we have so many relationship problems, divorce, etc. I've met a lot of 30-something women that have told they have like three kids...two in school or daycare, and one that they are married to.
Many younger women I've met are having problems in relationships cause that so called 22 year old guy that is supposed to be relating to her...acts much more like their younger brother. My 20 year old grandmother married my 40 year old grandfather and that's the way it used to be...and it worked. | |

People's growth velocity drops to zero by age 19-20. This is well-documented. So maybe you're not talking about physical growth and maturity? If you're talking about social growth, say in status and money-earning ability, then you're talking about the social environment in which young people find themselves, one which is quite different for boys and girls. In other words, it isn't some inherent difference intrinsic to the two sexes.

At 18 she is old enough to make her own mistakes and live by it . Another thing I am going say which going to annoy people but has to be said what makes it right or wrong ?Society!
I also read what the parents are thinking letting the 18 year old ahead and do it well in UK once somebody reaches 18 they are considered and adult not sure on the laws in the USA. Leagally she could get married in the UK without the parents consent. I know at 18 I would try and live my own not let my parents decide whats best for me. Although I do respect my parents advice but it's my life not theirs. | |

I know these marriages happen, yet I'm not a supporter of them. I think the girl is seeking a father figure, and the guy is insecure. The age gap is nearly a generation. She's just begun her life and he's well into his. Beyond the sex, there is so much more a couple shares. Its only my opinion of course.
There is a genertion between them. He is 22 years older than her, and easily old enough to be her father. The government has decided for whatever reason that 18 is an adult, but is someone that is 18 years old truly an adult in every way? I think not. A 40 year old man marrying a 18 year old girl, seems like a border line child molestor to me. | |

Perhaps if she had not married a man old enough to be her dad, she could have went to college, graduated, got a great job. Found a man her own age, married him, and had a happy life.
I wonder how he feels when they go out and people think he is her dad. Wonder how he will feel if they have children together, and everyone that sees them assumes he is the grandfather.
Age doesn't matter to a point, but this is way beyond that point. Stage of life also matters. She is just getting to adulthood(as far as I am concerned she is still very much a child) and he is a middle aged man that has already done a lot of living.
Really 1missblueeyes, a 40 year old man marrying a 18 year old girl is just fine? I am 51, so does that mean it would be ok to you if I marry a 29 year old man(not that I would even date one)? Or is it just ok for men to marry much younger girls?
