Posted: 1/21/2008 11:22:03 AM | Wow! A lot of bitter responses from women on here. I actually knew a girl in high school who married a 38 year old man when she was the tender age of 18. Of course, we all thought that she was crazy back then and thought that he was some pervert. They are still together and have several children. I just saw her recently and she is happy as a can be. As I've gotten older, I really don't care to judge people and have come to understand that, in certain cases, there are people who society doesn't believe belong together but are ideally suited for one another. The worst thing that two people in a relationship can do is listen to all the other haters that are out there.
PS. Hmmm...I think I'm gonna go boink an 18 year old now...lol | |

Going back through a couple of yearbooks they seemed to be in a lot of pictures together, so who knows how early it started, but honestly who really cares. I graduated in 1981 and the last time I was in town (2005) they were still happily married, with a couple of kids. Real love does not recognize societal boundaries. | |

Geez... I think you missed the point of what i was trying to say. To sum it up... an older man does indeed have a lot to offer a younger woman, just as the older woman has plenty to offer a young man. Critical life experience in both situations. Even better, is that these two pairings are good mental and emotional matches too... they're sharing the same "head-space"...
I know exactly what was the point of the post and No they dont and No they are not...its a BS argument albeit well written piece as I stated...to try to argue the *beneficial* point to simply get down & dirty with a kid young enough to be your child.

What part of that is soooo difficult to understand that you feel the need to write a debate attempting to qualify a situation that most everyone doesnt agree with & young girls as a general rule want nothing to do with?
And YOUR point about teaching children what is and isn't acceptable behaviour supports exactly what I said... yes it does work and this is one ways that life skills are passed on...
Oh and one more thing about this^^^ try doing it with someone you werent stupid enough to screw up with in the first place because you were too dumb or gave yourself a multitude of reasons to do anything else except what you should have been doing in the firstplace. ie. not being selfish & f8cking up.

I think men have issues (or women) for that matter that remotely think they are on the maturity level of an 18 year old kid...and who refuse to accept that somethings are just not right regardless of whether they are allowed to do it.

Sure they can decide legally...but whether they decide with any forethought and clearly no wisdom at that age is a totally different thing.
As adults...particularly past the age of say 30 +...your brain should pretty much have caught up with your body. And thats why the job of "adults" is to nurture and guide 18 yr olds through life and not take advantage of them.

Yeah...gettin shot at...and who do you think sends them there?...the 30 pluses. The people old enough to know that its a stupid decision to make to go there & put yourself in that position but its real smart to send others.
Now dont get me wrong...Im all for the service and the wonderful & difficult job that they do. This is in reference to age only.
A vote?...who cares...give it to 13 plus or 21 plus for all I care...most often its nothing to do with politics & is all about marketing & popularity.
Besides all of that is moot as its the leading into life as an adult...but turning 18 doesnt automatically make someone mentally adult.
Put the legal age of consent up to 21 and further to that...Id be happy to support Law making it illegal for anyone outside a 15yr increment have relations with anyone under 25.
^^^If someones motivation is the health, wellbeing, development & growth of young adults and not self serving and sexual...you shouldnt have a problem with it regardless of what argument you wanna pull outta your ass next. | |

On topic, while it maybe legal for a 40 and a 18 year old to marry, doesn't make it right, I truly believe that there is something wrong with the guy, no normal man would attempt to even have a relationship with a girl that age, what would they have in common beside a physical relationship, unless the girl at 18 is a candidate for the Nobel Peace prize for economics and far beyond her years, like how many 18 years old are like that?
yeah yeah, I know some one you will say oh my parents are 25 years apart and there still happy today blah blah blah .We also tend to have a rather idyllic vision of how marriages used to go. The truth is that not everyone ended up blissfully happy after 50 years of marriage. There was a lot of misery swept under the rug because there were no other choices. The reality is that people grow and mature differently
People used to forgive or ignore each others' infidelities, carelessness, or even abuse in order to save face and supposedly for the children's sake. Whatever the reason, this is plainly unhealthy, times have changed, its not longer the norm to marry at 16 and have multiple children, unless you live in one those trailer parks and is a product of inbreeding , and bathe a cement pond | |

The foreward is written by a man that has has been married 28 years to the same woman. I envy their relationship. He was 52 and she was 18 when they married. Maybe we should learn to think twice about judging things in life we have NO CONCEPT OF, huh?

First, just because she is 18 and married someone, no matter the age does not mean that she is not going to finish university or college like a few have said. I know several people who have gotten married at young age and finished university and obtained degrees in their chosen field. Just because he is older does not mean that we are to assume that he will not allow her to finish school. Nor does it give us a right to assume that she is suppose to be barefoot and pregnant too.
It also does not mean that she is looking for a sugar daddy.
All these assumptions that we are making could be true but we do not know them and their relationship so we can only sit here and assume.
As for me, no I would not marry someone that much older than me. That is just me though. I would want someone closer to my age so we could experience things together and with an older man, he will have experienced these things already.
I would wonder though what they would have in common is all.
But I wish em the best of luck and hope it is real love. Demi and Ashton seem pretty happy.

If I was to check the positives to the negatives on this thread I would be willing to bet a majority of those cool with this scenario would be OLDER MEN. I have not looked though I am sure someone will now.
There is a reason why these two people cannot relate to people their own age in this scenario. I am also willing to bet that if one knew the backgrounds of the two involved it would speak volumes.
Though 18 is LEGAL, the emotional maturity IS NOT THERE.

That was my point, but it seems to be lost on her. It is not the message so much as the way she writes the message and the hostility and contempt she conveys towards anyone that differs with her opinion.
