To answer the question whether America is still the finest land upon this earth you have to see where America is going. To see where America is going you need to look at what Congress and the Judiciary are doing. Whichever way America goes you will observe the beginnings there.

Looking from outside I would say Americans do not realise how anti-freedom their system has become through the introduction of the Patriot Acts. There is a war on the American Bill of Rights. I suspect its a little known fact that the FBI does not need any other reason other than suspicion to enter an American citizen’s home whether the person is at home or not. A judge is not even required!!! If an American citizen reads a book that is on an anti-government list the American citizen will become a suspect and will be put under surveillance and can be arrested and detained without going in front of a judge. I can go on.

The simple answer to the question is that America is blessed with wealth and everything that comes with the most powerful nation on earth.

The price to pay is an erosion of freedom which is happening now and this influence has happened across the globe. The question should be does the American citizen have the will to hold onto the freedoms their founding fathers gave to be the Finest Land Upon This Earth?

other countries do that as well. not just the US. and to be picked up by the FBI you would have to have to be a pretty suspicious character. unfortunatley there are people out there that plan some very tragic things. our government is protecting us by doing that. is it a violation of our freedom? perhaps, depends how you look at it? exactly where do you you draw the line between protecting us and giving us freedom? it's their job to protect us yet we also have the right to be free. it's a fine line and people are always questioning where that line is. which side of the line do you sit?

This February, in Northampton, Massachusetts, some three hundred doctors, nurses, lawyers, social workers, retirees, teachers, and students organized the Bill of Rights Defense Committee to protect the residents of the town from the provisions of the Bush-Ashcroft USA Patriot Act and subsequent executive orders that-in the language of a resolution passed unanimously by the Northampton Town Council in May-"threaten key rights guaranteed to U.S. citizens and noncitizens by the Bill of Rights and the Massachusetts Constitution." Such as: "freedom of speech, assembly, proceedings, and protection from unreasonable searches and seizures."

I'm on the side of freedom. It so happens your freedom!!!

All you have to do is talk to an individual that is a suspect. Hey, you can find the woman of your dreams on this website and she could be under suspicion. Yes you guessed it you become that "a pretty suspicious character". Which side of the line will you sit on then?

i didn't mean it in that way. i meant that to be picked up by the FBI you'd have to be doing some very suspisious things. the FBI doesn't waste time and money on someone who just rents a book from the library. when someone buys an arsenal of assult rifles and consistently reads books that practise malicious activities i would appreciate my government investigating something like that. how would you feel if someone bombed the building your wife or family member is in because they work at a government building and that person felt they needed to terrorise the government? and i sit ON the line, i believe in both.

We all, believe we must combat terrorism but to base fighting terrorism with taking away your freedom seems a bit Stalism to me. Of course a fine balance must be found. What degree of intrusion and how much liberty will you give up?

An American citizen in jail should be talking to an American lawyer. Unfortunately in these circumstances it will not happen.

Hey, it’s really up to you where you think the line should be drawn but don’t dig your head in the sand as to what is happening.

perhaps you are a turd Varus. Secondly, what do either you or your fan club know of humility. I am going through all the forums and a constant theme comes up, the ego of Varus and the false modesty displayed when someone compliments him. Varus, you are not dumb, I'm not calling you dumb, but you seem like the kid in school that had to try to hard to make friends, you did better with the people you weren't trying to impress. FB

i'm aware of what's happening but i don't see people being pulled out of their homes because of suspision on a regular basis. you speak like it's a huge thing. the government has always intruded in the lives of americans. either way you go you're giving one up for the other, that's why i said people are always arguing where the line stands. to have one you must give up the other. it just depends on which one is more important at the time and people are more willingly to give up.

I never said people are regularly being pulled out of their home. The point is that the framework is now in place for that to happen. As a side note, just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Hey you’re not going to be told now are you? Your right to be informed don’t exist.

you speak like it's a huge thing.

The changes in the American laws are a big thing. Anything that affects the American Bill of Rights is pretty big to me.

once again, i don't believe people are regulary being pulled out of their homes because of the books they rent. the question is: Freedom vs. Security. to have one you have to give the other

Freedom vs. Security

Why should freedom be equated to security? Should it not be better and more vigilant security? 9/11 should never have happened. It was not a problem of freedom. The security forces knew months before that something was planned, but their security measures were inadequate and sadly lacking. The freedom v security game is a dangerous game to play.

Anyway, thanks for the debate maybe talk some other time. If you have time read the Patriots Acts in between your dating, huh.

Nice talking.

Why should freedom be equated to security?

because the government has failed to show they can accomplish both successfully. for the government to listen into phone calls of suspects it gives up freedom. if the government doesn't tap the phone lines you keep the freedom but you're losing the potentially life saving information that could have been obtained. i would love to see a balance between the 2 but you're always gonna have people arguing for each side to become more powerful. and yes, sadly is it a very dangerous game.

9/11 should never have happened.

yes they knew something was going to happen but they didn't know exactly what. yes we know now and after looking at this evidence for YEARS we obtained all the information. yes the fbi and the cia have marital problems but these things do happen from time to time in every country (unfortunatley) when you have people out there willing to kill themselves and others for their cause. are there measures in place to prevent these things from happening again? yes, you're d*mn right there are. i wish that 9/11 didn't happen but it did. to prevent these things from happening they're taking away some of our freedoms. that's why i say it's Freedom vs. Security. which one is most valuable right now?

All these faults of usa you described are true. but compared to usa the next country is
so far behind, we americans will not notice its decline, and we'll continue this lifestyle.
At this rate of decline i'll give USA another 200 to 500 yrs before total collapse. So, cheer
up.

I was not aware that "America" was ever the finest land upon the Earth. Perhaps you make reference to the small frowned upon portion of it known as the United States.

i've noticed something. a lot of canadians get offended when there's a statement indirectly/directly stating the US is in some way better than Canada. i'm not saying it is or isn't but there's is definatley hostile feelings towards us. but of course when Bush is the president it's not hard to imagine why that is : /

Yes, we do, we get very offended because we are bigger (gegraphically speking) - I'm JOKING!

Maybe it's because a few Americans, note I said a few, tend to be aggressive super-patriot types. Canadians are mostly laid-back,and don't like attitude very much. I don't think that most of us are hostile, and we haven't enough weapons to take over the U.S.A. We'd rather do it by trying to talk you into our way of seeing the world, one post at a time.

Eventually, we will wear you down - LOL!

lol lyrical heart. that's what i liked about bill clinton, he was a great speaker and could sell ice to the eskimo's if he wanted to. i didn't mean that all canadians are hostile but it seems to me they get offended if someone says something that makes them feel like their country is being belittled in the shadow of the US. it's almost like the whole "my dad can beat your dad up". most everyone would defend their country especially if they feel offended.

The US has survived this long and I think as long as some mad dictatorship like the neocons don't start some war against the world, we'll probably survive the one we have right now. I don't think the US will ever be as dominant as it was during the 1990's however.
