I can only think of three:

1) To stand beside one another no matter what.
2) To walk away forever to give him a chance of true happiness.
3) To lay down my life to save him.

Happy New Year everybody! Kasey

Thats what I've just done but my ex said I was selfish. the relationship had been over really for five years I had no real joy in my life and nothing to look forward to it was just work and weekends of just being part of the furniture, so I ended it and I felt great. It was scary because we had been together for 15 years but I'm so glad I did it. The thing is it did'nt feel like the greates act of love.It just felt like the end of another chapter in my life but thanks for posting that it sounds like you had to make the same decision.

To sacrifice anything and everything about yourself for your loved one, in order to help them succeed, live or better there own life. To love selflessly and unconditionally, despite the pain it might cause you.

the greatest act of all would be layin down yer life for another.....but an even harder act is to live for someone.............to obey is better than sacrifice.........martyr's choose to sacrifice self for a cause they believe in...it must be harder to choose to sacrifice yer own desires for anothers choice..............

This girl I worked with years and years ago came into the lunchroom one day, announced her life was basically over. Found her husband doing all these unhusbandly things...

Well, all the regular drama ensued. The moving out, selling of the house, kids, money, lawyers, all of it.

Time passed.

She started talking slowly at first about rediscovering herself. She came to realize (over time again) - that she had become nothing but a created response to this mans whims and had literally lost herself and she was determined to find HER again.

This meek little mouse shy thing...wow. Joined a gym, took all her anger out on the weights, did all the superficial things you can easily imagine...in a years time, she looked so different it was weirding everyone out.

The biggest change though was her mind.

She had dreams that lay dormant and unused since she was a really young child, and I'll be if she didn't go after all of them with the fury I can't even describe.

She went from wearing granny dresses to Vogue, enrolled in classes not for cooking but kick boxing, joined an artists community and bashed down the walls of her house, learned how to handle power tools and created this absolutely stunning historical flavored home complete with 18th century antiques. Started 3 business by herself, and everyone of them were a success.

She stayed with the company because we were her "family". Until one day....

Yep. A man came along.

They married.

She came back to the shop at Christmas this particular afternoon, we were all catching up with her. So many wonderful accomplishments under her belt. She started to describe her feelings for her new husband....they'd gone out the night before together, to church (former husband would have NEVER allowed this..)-

And right there in front of God and everybody at the candlelight service they sat in a pew together, and the preacher was talking about what to be thankful for in this world.

She said..."and he reached over, held his hand over mine..I looked at him, and I felt a warmness in my heart open looking at him, his eyes were closed and I could feel him praying for me.."

The man was praying for her soul.

How big is that? A great act of love.

As I've read above; in previous posts; to give above and beyond your OWN wants and desires in order to fulfill another's you do admire/care about, for ANY reason whether you know them or not, thus, with no feeling of remorse or guilt.

Just a POV...

How about breaking with your own values, morals and honour in order to preserve "face" in someone you hold dear?

Hmmm...
I have a bit of a hero complex so I would have to say the greatest act would be...
saving your loved one from a evil mob, or a burning building; Heck both lol.
then turning back into your none super hero form and taking no credit.

Gota run the evil mob found my secret layer!

Laying your life down for a friend you look what Jesus did at the cross he gave his life for us
for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
NOW THAT'S AN ACT OF LOVE.

vicrozhir,
Thanks but no thanks... this is not a place to post your self... Do you have a story to share about a great act of love or did you waste all of our time posting here!!!

ladypagey, terminallycute,
I have to agree that the greatest acts of love are usually acts of unconditional love.

Thank you all for your take!!!

For myself...
For a year of my life I worked with kids 8-18 who had very screwed up family lives. The job(s) were very rewarding but I was going in the hole financially so I had to give them up.
Everyone should do a year of public service just to know how lucky they really are.

Well the greatest act of love I have experienced is one I gave away without a moments thought. My son is almost 8 years old and does not remember living with his dad because we split up when he was 2 1/2 years old. But he is getting to that age where he wants his dad all the time and his dad lived 5 hours away because he is in the military...So I called his dad up one day and asked him how long he is guaranteed to be stationed where he is....He said 10 years...so rather than send my baby out there to his father and get to see him twice a month.....I gave myself month to find a new job and place and I packed up my Uhaul with some girlfriends and roadtripped it out to ottawa....I've been here almost a month and my son is having the time of his life...I've never seen him happier...He lives with mom...sees his dad a couple nights a week and every weekend...It was the best decision I ever made...Now I just need to make friends....I have more time on my hand since my son is with his dad...but no one to spend this time with.....I have no friends here so it would be nice to make a few...lol..but that is just me....I will give you the shirt off my back if I can...

Hugga,

Excellent story and YES a Great Act of Love for
your boy as every boy needs his Dad. If I was in
Ottawa I would buy you a tea or Coffee and give
you a big HUG.

Thank you so much for resurrecting this great thread!!
I cherish all the stories and opinions herein and I'm
proud to have been a part of it.

I'm presently faced with a problem of loving my neighbor
in a difficult situation. I posted the details here just today.

I'm in a situation where I have to protect myself from
a dangerous man and I'm reminded of the words Jesus spoke.
“Love your enemies!” Could these act of love be considered
GREAT if they don’t really disserve it? Or is it just a wise tactic that
fits the old saying “keep your friends close and your enemies closer”

Sometimes, the greatest act of love is for the self. It means to move on, taking that last bit of yourself into the world and rebuilding your life again.

Loving ourselves and respecting ourselves is sometimes the biggest challenge we face.
