I run gentoo at home for my desktop (I'm a do-it-yourself-er), and also at work on 7 servers. ROCK stable, and 100% reliable. I dont suggest it to others as a first distro, and usually give people kubuntu if they ask me about linux.

I use redhat in work and FreeBSD at home. Used mandrake for a while and the kids loved it. Long live the penguin.

Of the six distros I've tried so far, I've liked Open SUSE 10 and Ubuntu 5.04/5.10 the most. Mandriva seems good too, but I've found that it looses my network settings, so for now I've given up on it.

I've also tried the Live CD of Knoppix. I was very impressed by it, and the thought of running an entire OS off a CD/DVD is still somewhat hard to believe. Damn Small Linux was just plain cool (only 50 MB in size!), and the System Recovery disc has proven a life-saver (especially qtparted!)

I've had only one or two major crashes, which is way lower than the number of crashes I've had in Windows. I've found Windows XP doesn't crash too often, but it does more than any Linux distro I've tried. And even one Bluescreen of Death is too many.

If I could run all my programs (and my games) on Linux, I would completely switch over. Yes, I know there is WINE and CEDEGA, but I'm still learning how to use Linux, so for now I'll keep Windows. Seeing as I have a seperate hard drive for playing around with Linux, I can do that without worrying about Windows taking exception with my flirtation with GNU/Linux.

I think Tux is the best mascot ever!

I'll be the freak: I've been doing LFS-type systems for a while. I've been meaning to give Ubuntu a test drive on client systems. As far as for servers/routers/etc., I prefer to use FreeBSD.

The best linux desktop distro out there is PCLinuxOS. Started a few years ago, it was an offshoot of Mandrake, and still retains Mandrake/Mandriva's tools for use.

However, it's livecd is awesome, and comes with all the video codecs, flash plugins and java plugs installed. It even has commcerial drivers for nVidia or ATI installed on different versions of it. Even though I like Opera (its the fastest browser, so I mainly use that), it's Firefox works great when watching videos embedded in web sites. It's just plain awesome out of the box.

It's packages are up-to-date, and has a very wide range of them. In fact, it's packages out-do many other distros in terms of speed of release (for full speed of release on their special repository server, a $5 donation is required, otherwise ya wait a week or two). And even when a certain no-name app doesn't have an app in its huge repository, many times you can get the Mandriva version to run, or obviously compile your own (not rec. for newbies).

Out of the box, it's damn sweet. Many people migrate from Mandriva to it, because if you've used Mandriva, you'll see that this is an upgrade to it, even under the hood.

I have not used a unix base OS yet but I would like to learn it. I know I will need to learn it sooner or later so I figure now would be a good time.

I have looked at the SuSE at college but I have not had time to play with it

On that note what would be a good, easy to learn OS to play with?

Donnti,

Read my above post -- PCLinuxOS! Best easy-to-use distro out there. Everything out of the box. It's awesome. It comes on a Live-CD, so you can boot off a CD and play with it before you even install it.

I need XP for lots of stuff. But I have a kickin' rig with tons of memory, so I run VMware and Knoppix-STD and P.H.L.A.K. straight off the .iso. Great for pen-testing with my laptop...

If you want something that's going to be easy for end users to install and use....then you've DIFFENTLY got to go with Ubuntu. It's one of the few distros that actually works after you install it. Although, i'm not sure how it's hardware detection is, i know mandrake years ago automatically deteced the TV card in my system.

For a Mac PowerPC based...again..Ubuntu..don't even bother with some of the other distros, i spent three weeks trying to get Gentoo to compile, and it failed.

so I run VMware and Knoppix-STD

Is that still maintained? I used it for a while at my old job, but it seemed to become somewhat stagnant.

VMWare is great, one of the few apps I thought was so good I actually shelled out the money for it ;-)

Ubuntu, Mandriva, Suse, Fedora... those are the big names when it comes to working out of the box.

PCLinuxOS is a verteran distribution now, a former off-shoot of Mandrake, and still retains their tools, which are regarded as some of the best.

No distro will work 100% out of the box on even 95% of systems... but PCLinuxOS has a great reputation at coming the closest. Good thing about Ubuntu, is that they have the best forums for help.

However, PCLinuxOS comes with everything a desktop user would want -- multimedia, file sharing tools, video codecs, plug-ins pre-installed well, etc. And for everything it provides, it's fast. It's a miracle distro for many, who have tried Suse (bloated), Mandriva, Ubuntu, and Fedora before with some quirks.

As far as linux goes... my vote goes to Gentoo...

but I still think that BSD is by far a better beast :p

Some clients use Red Hat, of various versions, which is not so bad. I use Whoppix for Wifi security auditing. I have DSL on my thumbdrive for emergencies.

i know that you said linux... but i have to agree with alot of these heads...
FreeBSD is the way to go... and im stable 4.11 guy myself.
netBSD is okay too but not the biggest fan of open.

as far as linux is concerned.
im no longer a fan of FC for anything other than laptops... its nice to have the bleeding edge support for laptops especially with wifi related things.

if you are a stable kind of person go with CentOS, its basically RHEL but no paying for the updates... there are subtle differences and if looking into the kernel youll notice that the cent guys go to great lengths with their kernel to reroute around somethings to stick to the RHEL naming scheme. it does stick you with a 2.6.9 kernel so if you want to be on top youll have to compile your own.

i agree with the guy that posted earlier about knoppix for live distro... though id amend it by saying the STD distro which is slightly different, seems to run better on the amd64 and i386 chipsets... and has a much better toolkit for admin related things... i got sick of downloading a tarball everytime i booted the regular distro and compiling your own [though useful] can be time consuming and a pain in the ass.

if you arent scared of configuring and learning go with my favorite of the linux flavors... slackware. its long running, will prolly be around for awhile, has swaret [so that you dont have to fear losing yum] and is an all around stable and good distro.

i never liked gentoo, mandriva nor debian... and ive had too many problems with suse in the past to call it a contender. ubunta [sp?] seems to be popular around the office but i have had any experience with it.

just my 2 cents.
have a nice day.

I've tried a few out there, Fedora Core, Red Hat, Suse, Gentoo, Ubuntu and FreeBSD...
I prefer Fedora Core...so far it is the one that has given me the least problems...
I tried Ubuntu and it corrupted my HD which was a pain :(

FYI - Fedora Core 5 is out there....have you got your copy?!

I love Fedora, i'm a programmer that likes to get into the code and fix/add what i can, and Fedora so far has gave me the less headaches doing this. Also like Gentoo, though i can't get it to work properly on this HT system, it will randomly crash with a thread error (something with the hardware interface i think). As far as virtual machines, VMWare sucks, there is one on sourceforge, something comptuer, that works very well, but cuts off windows functions for a better hardware link when the virtual machine is in the focus.
