Red Hat - use it at my work.

OpenBSD - is cool, very secure.

But, I love my Windows. The file permissions on Windows are soo much better. There is more then read/write/execute. And I want multiple groups etc etc. GUI's are my fav, even though windows should get some more command line stuff.

I think sometimes what is good about the Unix permissions is that it is simple and will do it most of the time. If it is simple, it might be easier to get right which is good as permissions incorrectly set is a security hole.

I think that's why the Unix security model has survived for so long unchanged.

People that needs extra flexibility will use things like SELinux or tools like sudo, chroot, jail, etc. To limit powers or to give some powers to some users without giving all of them (i.e. root access).

Would anybody care to comment on why they think Linux is either batter or more popular than the BSDs?

I'm not interested in a "vi vs. emacs" religous flamewar, just objective observations and opinion. Besides, everybody knows vi is better :-)

Go with Ubuntu if you're new. It's based on Debian, which is the best technology available, but it's easier, for beginners.

Oh, and, by Ubuntu, I actually mean Kubuntu -- the KDE version of it. GNOME used to be good, but KDE is far better now.

Well, if you use the term Linux to mean any of the more than 300 Linux OSes and you want to compare that with the 4-5 BSDs. Most BSDs (at least the 3 major) kind of target the same user group. If you take Ubuntu Linux, for example, they don't target the same users.
That's one reason.

Linux (the kernel) has better hardware supports than the BSDs. All Linux OSes use the Linux kernel and therefore would have (usually) good hardware support to.

Linux -- there is a marketing hype. A lot of non-Linux/non-Unix users heard about Linux and wants to try a Linux OS. Most of the time they don't know that Linux is either a kernel or a term to designate over 300 OSes that have a specific kernel. They just ask for Linux. The BSDs are not advertised as Linux because they don't use the Linux kernel. So they cannot benefit from the hype.

Depends on who you are. Good thing, there are less common categories than the billion of linux distros out there.

1. Relatively modern desktop or laptop - PCLinuxOS. Awesome out of the box. Comes with video codecs, java & flash plugins, and all the common desktop software you'll need. Out of the box, blows Windows away. Want DVD playback, windows fonts, and a few windows-based codecs for some older videos? Just as adding in other applications not out of the box, just a few clicks through synaptic app, and you've got it. No installation program to go through. Easier to install and deinstall software than under Windows. All the diagnostic tools than come with Mandriva, which are rated the best by many many folks. Great community support, hardware detection, etc.

2. Aged Desktop or Need for Speed Desktop- Vector Linux. Extremely Fast. Fastest distro out there, and comes with plugins and essential apps. Based on Slackware, so it's fast, secure, and does the job -- even on a system with 256MB of RAM and even less.

3. For those who want to "build your own" Linux (techies) -- Gentoo. Takes a while, builds everything from scratch to match your CPU... it's a great 'from scratch' system. A lot of work to do it, but that's what techies like to have full knowledge and control of everything.

@OP

I've tried Knoppix (5.01), loved it. tried Ubuntu (5.10), couldn't stand it...

tried Kubuntu (6.06), used it until 2 weeks ago (when I got my CD for 7.04)

Kubuntu is easy to administrate like Debian (being a variant of Ubuntu, which is debian based), it's got huge repositories... (6.06 has 18k packages in just the 'buntu repositories... 7.04 has >23k)

best of all for me (coming from windows), it was easy to figure out, it worked (and worked really darn well, at that)... and I could use it my way without any trouble...

KDE is worlds better than gnome for someone who is used to the glitter of windows, and wants to "ease into" the linux world... like I was when I started using it... now, I wish to be free of windows... but WINE isn't up to snuff quite yet...

I'm with the previous comment about Linux having hardware support.

I found that was why I was driven away from the BSDs... while I like their philosophical roots, and their open communities... the fact I can't use all of my hardware, or all the latest/greatest innovations... well, feels more restrictive than the windows EULA...

Well, I'm a Gentoo Linux user myself. There is no windoze here either. I have been using it for quite a while, about 3 or 4 years I guess. I love it myself. It has come such a long ways since I started using it. Sometimes the people have a hick up or two but I think they got that fixed so now maybe they can concentrate on doing some good things more often.

My rig, AMD 2500+ with 1GB of ram. Abit NF7 V 2.0 mobo. Two 80GB hard drives. LG CD/RW. All in a pretty good size server type case. I have a 19" monitor too.

I use KDE for my desktop. The only thing I want to change is my internet connection. I hope they will have DSL out here soon because this dial-up sucks.

Well first off (in about 2002 or so maybe) I used Xandros, seemed to not be very friendly to customizing so I wanted something else.
Then used Slackware... I really liked it.
Then I tried Yoper was to slow my computer only had 512 ram at the time.
then Vector Linux I think.
then I went back to Slackware for a while.
Installed Kubuntu liked it a lot.
tried Suse did not like it.
went back to Kubuntu for a fair while then feisty started having problems with my harddrives so I switched to Fedora 7 which I'm currently running.
I plan to go back to Kubuntu when Gutsy is released.

I've tried Gnome but I have always used KDE for the most part.

I too like Kubuntu. I tried many distros: suse, redhat, xandros, mandrake, mepis, lindows etc etc.

The first one that I used daily was Knoppix, installs easily and KDE was easy to get to use.
After that I switched to Kubuntu to get on the Ubuntu bandwagon. Been happy ever since.

Puppy Linux does most everything I want out of the box. However not very hard to specialize it. Also works very well on older hardware.

If you really want something with more bells and whistles out of box then PClinuxOS is probably way to go. Then Knoppix, then Mepis, in that order. But really I dont think any of those do anything that Puppy cant and Puppy will run noticably faster unless you have a very fast computer.

I like puppy. But you must admit it isnt a "full" linux distro. I know, it does not aim to be, but that's another discussion.

I like (and use) PCLinuxOS. It's secure, stable and comes with a lot of eye candy out the box.

Just my 2c.

Mandriva (nee Mandrake).

I've been using it for over 3 years on my home PC. I check out other distros from time to time (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, SUSE, Debian) but nothing's given me a compelling reason to switch.

Altho I've been a programmer for years, I'm relatively new to Linux but now like it a lot. Not wanting to fight with the OS I tried several distros over the years. The first one I tried that installed out of the box, recognizing all my hardware (nothing exotic) was SUSE. I like SUSE a lot. The only problem I had with it was getting Video Codecs to work. If you go to various websites they flat out tell you there is no video support even if you wan to pay for it. (Standard mpeg2 DVD's) I also had a lot of trouble getting wireless to work.
I recently switched to Ubuntu. It works fine just like SUSE with the added advantage of readily available codecs and better support from the online community. I like Knopix to use as a test platform to see if hardware in a new machine is supported. (it runs from a DVD)
I run a dual boot system with Windows and Linux. I run Linux about 95% of the time. There are a couple of Windows apps I use and like. There are probably Linux equivalents, but I'd need to search them out and learn them and it's not really worth the trouble yet. (for example Magix Audio Cleaning Lab). Does anyone know a good Linux substitute?

I got Mandriva but it says I/O error when I try to install it so I'm on XP at the minute (with Windblows Insecurity Centre switched off of course!)

I wouldn't go for SUSE now that Novell have sold out to Micro$ucks.

Debian - net install, stripped
Openbox - alone if possible
fbpanel or pypanel if you need one

dead simple to keep up to date:
>aptitude update
>aptitude dist-upgrade

install software:
>aptitude install [package name]

a lot has changed in the last year, Debian's easier to install and use than it's old reputation

If you're using a derivative, you might like the real thing if you give it a try
