I think I should do all of the above, but have to admit I'm been living the "dechurched" view of things lately...institutional religion and spirituality should not be confused with each other, imho

Why can't one just be good for the sake of being good. I don't believe there is a need to be good because of anything, just because it is the right thing to do. I can quantify this, but I have no doubts most of you would either fall asleep in no time, or I'd start a war.
To answer the original question. No.

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/5/2006 10:13:41 PM | This may seem strange coming from someone who has spent most of their adult life involved in the sciences and who has also studies science but my answer to your question is a resounding yes. I see the miracle of life..i see the miracles of creation..i see everything that you see ..around us everyday and none of these things can be explained in scientific terms.. we know how processed take place but are stumped when we try to define life. Our best efforts to date has failed to create life. A growing number of scientists are starting to conclude that life and everything we know are mathmatecical impossibilities. Some people say they done see god..I look around me and all i see is the handywork of a higher power. I believe that God does exist. I do not believe in organized religion. I believe that the original beliefs and practices have been changed by man over the years. When i look at organized religion.TV evangelists etc. it makes me sick.....
ok..i've said enough | |

I do think that having some religion in life is good for one's personal settings. (...) If you stay true to who you are, not be swept up in immoral behaviors and learn compassion, fogiveness and keep on hell of a sense of humor....then thats all you'll need to keep your faith alive.
why do you have to have faith and religion to do that?
it looks like you're saying that atheists can't be compassionate, decent people.
i think it is possible to be a "good" person without practising religion - any religion.

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/6/2006 5:09:30 AM | The religions of the world are the boxes man has built to try to put God in. Am I religious?...no Do i believe in God?....YES Here is a question. Why is it that when ever someone does believe in God there are those that would assume that that belief has no basis and that the "believer" is some poor mindless sap that has been duped into his/her belief as opposed to someone that has intellegently investigated their choice? | |

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/6/2006 6:51:26 AM | Religion and God is a very difficult and touchy subject - just look at all of the confrontations that have taken place the last few thousand years.
I am a baptised Catholic but I don't practice it and I don't beleive in it. I find religion (at least the Catholic religion) is based on guilt. I can remember years ago when I was young going off to Church in Ireland. My relatives would go to Church in the morning and then come home and curse, drink, gamble etc... and I had a real problem dealing with the hypocracy of the whole thing.
And don't get me going on the Southern U.S. bible thumpers.

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/6/2006 7:33:35 AM | DB that was not directed at you but Mr. PP. Everyone has some religion in life, atheists as well. Ugh see this is why I hate debating this crap. The minute you say something and miss out one person's belief they jump on you for saying something that offends them personally. You can be a good person no matter what...I don't care anymore. This is almost as bad as my bringing up the flu shot....I say one statement and I've got people jumping on me and redirecting my answers.
I really do have to stop adding my opinion to these bloody topics.

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/6/2006 10:38:06 AM | Well I agree with Pat. I think he put it very well and "Yes, I believe in God". I have faith in Jesus & since my wife & I split, I feel it really helped pull me through the BS. So there...

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/6/2006 12:18:28 PM | Yes, this certainly is a very controversial subject.
I believe that God resides within us and all around us. Everywhere. Every time we smile, sing, write from our heart or demonstrate our love to each other we are expressing and sharing God. God is in the beauty of the world, the birth of a child, a growing flower, in the kindness shown to others. In the miracles of life which are happening everyday but we do not really see or believe. People are searching for him in some far off distance, in various religions and churches, when in fact, he has been with us all along. Many religions believe that theirs is the one true path and that to believe any other way is to risk eternal damnation. I was witness to that for many years growing up in the Catholic faith. Religion uses fear, rather than love. God has not made any ethnic or cultural group his chosen people, any religion for special favour, nor given any gender or race superiority over another. There is only one way to find God and that is within yourself.
But.....this is just my opinion. We all have the freedom to believe what we choose.

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/6/2006 2:15:21 PM | I don't belive in religion, the organization is geared to servicing itself..
I do however have faith... I have faith in in God.. in Jesus the Savior and that in some way our lives can make a difference...
I do not belive in the pope, the priest, pastor or basically the man...
Huge difference between religion and Faith... you don't have to go to church to worship God... Jesus didn't... and isn't that what Christianity is? Following the teaching and aspiring to live as Jesus? Heal the sick, help the weak, the helpless and the needy... save those that need saving IE help those that need helping...
Hope for a better future, Faith in that our life is not some meaningless game... try to help other people, don't judge and **** about something, try to actually make a difference..
Heres something I been thinking about
Being a good christian.... it's implied... you either apsire to be Christ like or you don't..
one cannot be a bad christian...you either are Christian or you are not..
But than again... I'm more and more starting to think Jesus was sent from a completely different God than what people see God to be today..
Jesus = tolerance, compassion, love and kindness
Modern Religion = judgement, harsh cruelty, one of us or against us, help those they want to help, not the ones who need it....
Jesus basically said it best and wether you care or not it goes sumething like this..
Love your neighbour.... Thats it, simple, and heres the busted down, simple truth of it..
you gonna kill someone you love? Steal from them? Lie to them? Hurt them? no... your not..
gonna cut to the quick here... religion behind war? maybe, maybe not.... but I can tell you it has nothing to do with Jesus, God or anything like that.... any war is started by people... for personal selfish wants and greed...
I am inteligent and have chosen Jesus to be a part of my life... not a brainwashed fool...
And with that, sermon over, now go out and make a difference....

DB that was not directed at you but Mr. PP.
last time i checked, if you post something on a public discussion forum, it's open for anyone to respond to it.
Everyone has some religion in life, atheists as well.
atheists and agnostics like me disagree with you.
The minute you say something and miss out one person's belief they jump on you for saying something that offends them personally.
if you think that was jumping on you, you need to develop a thicker skin.
and i wasn't offended.
I say one statement and I've got people jumping on me and redirecting my answers.
like i said, it's a public discussion forum. if you post, it's fair game for anyone who reads to answer it. if you're not prepared for that then you're right about this:
I really do have to stop adding my opinion to these bloody topics.
you made a statement that i disagree with, because i have no religion or faith and i have morals and values that are every bit as valid as those of the most devout religious person. and those values probably are not very different from those of that devout person.

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/6/2006 3:54:32 PM | Do I believe in GOD? HMMM Whose God are we talking about? The one that says to attack the US or the one that says to attack Iraq? Or is it the one that trapped miners in W. Virginia, or the one that gives life...Too many "gods"!!! I do believe in the Good and Evil! I would say I also believe in a "supreme being/entity, that is the creator of life, but I don't see "it" as a man sitting in heaven looking down over us. As far as religion is concerned, I don't know how many could believe in organizations that are corrupt and preach only based on their own agenda. (just look at what Pat Roberts said about Sharron) spelling? If believing in a God makes you a better person, then by all means believe! | |

You know...I don't know you and you don't know me Divine. And rather than sit here and play ring-around-the rosey with you about this. I think it's best that we not respond to each other's topics or answers anymore. Yes its a open chat forum, yes you are expressing your opinion...but so am I. Thicker skin has nothing to do with it at all. That's such an "A" typical response that I don't care for people who shove that kinda nonsense my way.
So lets just not talk to each other anymore and leave it at that. This is so how I didn't want be on these forums. You've got you wish madame....Jetplague is no longer going to respond to any topics relating to religion, medical issues, maybe even politics.
And with that....I banana dance out.

In your usual sound common sense way you have pretty much outlined the reasons why some believe and some don't. I respect you for that and I do realize how difficult it is for anyone to believe that there is a omnipotent and omnipresent creator who just sits by and watch all the tragedy taking place and yet seems to do nothing. All I can do is give you my take on this and leave it at that so here goes.
I believe that there is a bigger plan the ultimate plan that we as mortals do not fully understand. I believe that all the tragedies we experience are lessons that we have to learn in order to be able to appreciate the value of eternal peace and love. I believe that God has been given a lot of bad press because of man's misinterpretation and stupid arrogance. This is why there have been so many wars and such violence in the name of God. I believe that there is a distinct differenc between God and religion. I believe that this life as we know it is not the beginning and the end. For all those who die a senseless death at the hands of religious fanatics or what we call natural disasters ( Acts of God..I have trouble with this..) there is something greater in store for them ..some reward that is greater that life on this plane of existence.
Louis..I respect your opinions, questions, concerns...I believe we all have to go through these steps and at the end of the day come to some conclusion as per what we as individuals believe..If your conclusion is different to mine then I still respect you for it. I consider you a person who i have a great deal of admiration for and definitely someone who i would be more than happy to call a friend.Ultimately I do believe in a God or a supreme being and or a creator who does make us better people if we heed the lessons we learn and we trust him and have faith in him. Faith is an extremely difficult thing to have. How can anyone believe and trust in supreme being without any real visible proof that such a force exixts. I choose to believe. I also choose not to force my belief on anyone but rather to demonstrate my belief in the way I live and interact with my brothers and sisters on this little blue ball we all call home. Peace.

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/21/2006 8:08:05 AM | | Not sure if anyone noticed as I have not read the entire thread, but the original question is "Do you believe in god?" (small g). A small g implies an idol and not an Almighty God.Trick question? maybe. But, important nonetheless. Whether you are churched/unchurched/a believer or unbeliever, God exists. I see, read and hear about miracles all the time in my church and in my world. And that is just one example of many mysteries we encounter every day. There simply IS no other explanation. So for those who said they don't believe in "(g)od" , I agree! | |

| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/21/2006 8:32:32 AM | Sweet my threads back!! Don't forget tommorrow is time for worship boys!! And the next morning and night and oh yeah some afternoon worship can be good....... God bless!! | |
|
| Do you believe in god???? Posted: 1/21/2006 8:57:45 AM | Wow..now isn't this a controversial question to ask. Do you believe in God?
There are many culters and races that believe in many FORMS of God, not just one higher being that controls all, one that has the same physical attributes above anything else. So which "God" are you talking about?
God? Lords Brahma, Vishnu and Siva? Buddha? Goddess Saraswati? And the list goes on, and on, and on. Believe me, I researched it!!
As for what I, as a non-religious person, believe. My answer is plain and simple. Yes, I believe in "God" (as found in the Bible). To believe in God, you must, too, believe in the Devil. And I believe whole heartedly that we're currently living in Hell on Earth (wars, destruction, etc.). As for if I go to church, thump on every door and preach about it every chance I get...No. One's choice is one's choice. And I'm not here to change that at all.
But that's just waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too serious for me to get into. Gotta keep it light, all!! **Psst..grab my rolling papers out of the fake Bible on the bookshelf** (shh..if you listen hard enough, you can hear some POF jaws drop to the floor)
