Yup, I do that too. Improves the clarity of the vocal track considerably.

I also like digital delay. My favorite setting for vocals is 110 milliseconds, mixed 24%.

Hey,
Cool to see a recording thread on here. I've been hacking away at this for about 3 years now. Built myself a pc, bought a mixer some mics, a couple outboard thingamjigs etc.

A whole bunch of interesting points made so far. I had the whole mac pc argument with myself before I settled on pc. For me it was very much the devil you know :) Having said that I was playing on the online mac store, and checking out a quad processor g5
I'd give up my pc for that!

The godin acoustibass is a brilliant piece of gear. The one I had had 18v electronics which just thumped and if you put flats on it, and played up over the neck, it gives a pretty decent upright imitation without the hassle.

Right now I've got the yamaha mg10/2 mixer, gonna be upgrading soon. Not sure what to get. I'm lookin for min 16 channels, 4buss and up. Probably can plunk a grand or so down on it. Anyone have any suggestions?

There's a local guy who's got a project studio in his basement, and he's got a realy old Allen and Heath board. I think it's from the 70's.I've done a little bit of session stuff for him, always comes up with a nice open sound. Nice piece of gear actually. Where did you pick yours up?
I didnt think you could get them here.

Does it have direct outs on each channel?
I've been using the inserts as direct outs on my current mixer, but I could forsee using the inserts to pop a nice pre inline. Trying to get away from juggling wires all the time too.

There's a whole bunch of very positive reviews on A&H boards on the net, so I'll for sure look into them, and there's a L&M in Toronto so they might have em too.

Thanks for the tip

well seein as how my friends and i record and produce music i know a lil sumtin-sumtin. this is for rap and r&b since that is all we do. if u want the best get ready to pay for the best because it is expensive. in our studio we have:

korg triton-$3500
studio mic-$600
amp-$2500
computer-$ depends on what kind u want

we are waiting to get a vs2000 which is a mixer and help master your music. im not sure how much it costs but it is around $2000. we love music and want to do something with it. so if your dedicated and love it like we do, money doesnt matter. peace

I know what you're saying, I tend to live by the whole "get what you pay for, or pay for what you get" addage. The singer in my band has a triton in his studio, that thing is awesome. I can't play keys to save my life, but then with that thing I don't really have to

I have jus started not so long ago making my own tunes...I took the rather simple route...I bought myself a nice usb studio condensor mic...I also picked up a really cool audio studio program made by ejay it is for making alot of electronica music..but it also has a voice genrator in it and full out recording studio you can make your own polyphonic synth sounds and everything...Anyways I use my condensor mic and play my yamaha eterna guitar and muck around with it on there...I also have 2 digeridoos..2 keyboards...and yes a panflute lol but it has been very good for me so far once I get better I shall invest in more equipment but this is great for now

yea the triton is awsome. u can do so much on it, it is unbeleivable. were just waiting for the vs2000 so we can finish recording and mixing. we dont want to go to a studio and pay for it when we can just get that and do it ourselves. bassfingers this is a good investment and add on to your studio, take a look into it and youll see. as far as programs on the computer fruityloops is a pretty good program to use.

"I have heard of people using egg crates (commercial kinds that are 12 x 12 and hold about four dozen eggs), and glueing them to their walls and ceilings to improve sound quality./"

Ok here goes ... Because I have built a couple of recording studios and studied and read about acoustics until it would make the average sound enthusiast gag, here's what I've found.
Egg crates won't do anything except make your recording space look like, ... cheesy egg crates.
Here's why people insist on using them .... Because they they look like "studio foam". The convoluted "studio foam" that egg crates look like, is usually 2 to 4 inches thick and porous so that it absorbs sound. Egg crates ... do not have this acoustical property. The 2" foam will only absorb frequencies down to about 500hz and 4" down to 250hz. Your bass content is mostly below that. In fact more than 3 full octaves of it! (Middle "C" on the piano is 260hz.)
What realistically can egg crates do? ... because they are a hard convoluted surface, they will, to a very small degree, break up sound waves that hit them.(like a diffuser) And to an even smaller extent, attenuate only very high frequencies.
Don't forget, there are different strategies for doing up a room. Is the room for recording, or is it for mixing? Two totally different things.
First off, if any dimension of your room is a multiple of any other dimension, you have resonance problems.
Example: 7'X14'X8'h or the worst, and most common size if you use a spare bedroom ... 8'X8'X8h' because all the dimensions are the same.
This all has to do with how sound waves propagate in the air.

Try this site as a start.

Go through the links and read, read, read. When you think your brain will explode, read some more 'cause you're getting close. There is a lot of information you need to take in to make your rooms, and consequently, your recordings, sound better.
Please take my advice and read first, then ask questions on this forum if you need extra help.

$paperchaser/moneymaker$:

I've not tried fruity loops, although I've heard good things about fl studio. I use cakewalk sonar myself, and it does everrything I need and more.
A funny note about the triton: my buddy and I were playing with the preset patterns on the triton, and stumbled across this one pattern that sounded really familiar(cant remember what it was called) I was listening to the radio a couple days later, and that milkshake tune by kelis came on, and sure enough- it was that pattern pretty much note for note. Ok, so I thought it was funny anyways.

Home Studio Rule #1

- 99% of the gear marketed towards the non-pro market (pretty much everything in a music store that calls itself "affordable"), is utter crap.

Rule #1a

VST plug-ins/software enhancement can only REDUCE quality, ........if it's there to begin with.

Rule #2b

Digital "anything", ........see Rule #1a.

Rule #2

Buy analog "front-end", ie: Pre's, EQ's, Comps (hint: it's expensive).

Rule # 3

See rule #2, ......buy modular, ONE CHANNEL AT A TIME/One function at a time! ie: Pre, EQ, Comp. (less expensive/more productive/easier to upgrade)

Rule # 4

You need at least 4 mics, if you didn't spend at least $4k total ....... you probably bought crap.

Rule # 5

No problem with using a software program to "notepad", ....but:

If you use your studio to write songs, as opposed to of using it to record songs that you've written?

......You aren't writing songs, .......you're karaoke-ing yourself.

Codicil:

"karaoke-ing" is only bad if you try to pass it off as "production" as opposed to "pre-production"

IOW, ....a "means" is not an "ends".

This said, ...if you use it as a tool = recognize it as such.

Home studios are best used for tracking, it's relatively inexpensive to do so for under $10K, .....mixing and mastering? .......... to do a decent job is an investment of LEAST $150K, just in analog gear, ....... renting/hiring/selling your tunes is better than butchering them.

........Just 2¢

LATE
thanks for your 2 cents
now all I need is another $149,998 and I can have a studio

me and late had a long debate about this one............
I think you make some good points though
I just think you makes it sound so hopeless for the typical musician to
fulfill his dream of having a studio

I am more of the opinion that with $10,000 you could easily make a kick ass home studio
that you can make albums in............

I have read many professional sound engineers that say they could record a whole drumkit and get a professional sound with a bunch of shure 57's

I have heard stories of HIT SONGS recorded on adats and 4 tracks
IE
deelight's-"groove is in the heart" was recorded on an ADAT
MOBY'S big album used CUBASE as a sequencer for everything
ROXY MUSIC's 'avalon' and 3 of QUEEN's top albums were just remastered for 5.1
using NUENDO which has the same programming engine as Cubase sx
peter gabriel's REALWORLD studios --uses LOGIC as their recording platform

my point :
expensive gear is rad!!!!

IF you can't afford it ............use your ears and get the stuff that sounds the best to you
ie
take out 8 condenser mics from the store for a weekend and do a Mic shootout
buy the best one you can afford.....later buy a matching one for stereo left/right

also get experience using the tools
ie
mic placement,EQ,effects, mic pres..........etc

read lots............... BUT........... also do lots of hands on stuff........... LOTS of it
(below does not refer to LATE,he is a true professional musician and I recognize that)
nothing worse than a' know it all, that took a 3 month recording course- 3 nights a week at the community college and reads the trade papers............'
thinks he know his sh*T
I have had some type of multitrack recording system for 20 years and have recorded many albums for clients...........you learn by doing and getting your hands dirty......really dirty

Hey guitarman

I think you have a great thread here. I enjoy reading it. I am using a PC with Cubase SE at the moment. I have a decent Yamaha keyboard and I run everything through an Edirol mixer/interface.
The two things I would like to ask:
1) I am using the standard XG patch for the midi sounds and I am tired of the drum sounds and would like to get another sound module ( I am looking to spend 400-600 bucks). My Yamaha GX has some nice sounds on its own so I have been inputting them in as audio into my Cubase.
2) I want to take my mix and mastering to the next level. While I can get away with no fuzz or static to my mixes ...I want to achieve a higher quality to the bass end, vocal clarity and a more stereophonic picture that studios seem to get. I guess everything sounds bigger, clearer and louder. Just would appreciate some ideas to expand on my sound.

Appreciate your help and I love the thread!

Take Care
Robert

1-drum sounds
go on ebay and get an alesis d5 drum module
or
if you have a fast computer( p4 2.2mhz 2gig ram<---important)
you can get 'battery' a sampler program and then you can get tons of drum sample disks for cheap

2- on mastering
get 'waves' plug-in bundle-----EXCELLENT !!!
PSP VINTAGE WARMER

the trick...........
record your stuff really clear and clean
use waves L2 for increased level
waves imager for increased stereo field
psp vintage warmer for individual instruments

Hey Guitar man
Thanks for the advice. However, I do have Timeworks Compressors, a delay, a mastering compressor, Mastering EQ, and a mda Limiter. I know that compressors can push down the sound lower so that you can raise it higher in the mix...but am not sure how to apply it. I have an output level fader, an input fader, a threshold fader plus attack, release, and ratio and wall. I can fiddle with them but I am not sure if I have to add them real time or process them to the track first.
Also, if anyone can tell me when to use a limiter that would be great too. I am a quick learner so I hope to grasp this and make my mixes a lot better.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
I also have Magneto which also has Input, output and Tape Speed.
Thanks so much!!

Actually, we had a guy like this interning at the studio, he took a one year course at "Full Sail", in Miami. This is where ProTools is taught. I think the costs are around $45,000 now.

The kid knew nothing about sound, ....he knew software, .....that's it.

After two years in the studio with us, he learned enough about "sound" and "recording" to apply for a job at Metalworks studio in Toronto, ....this is a world class establishment.

He got the job, .....because he knew how to run the front-end gear, ....all analog. Now he's an assistant engineer, he'll make back the money he wasted at "Full Sail" in 'bout a year.
