funkychick, I've gone from a size 12 to an 8 (goal is to get to a 6 and I'm almost there) just by figuring out roughly how many calories I burn every day and eating less than that. It's really simple if you write down everything you eat and figure out the calories because you realize when you need to slow down for the day.

Eating 4-6 small meals a day + Drinking plenty of water + plus a job that gets me up and moving at a fast pace 1-3 hours a day = 50 pounds lost in the last six months. Around 110 since I started trying a little over a year ago.

Eating seems to be pretty important. If I spent any great amount of time hungry, consistently over a number of days, I would stop losing weight. I think digesting food takes a lot of energy or something.

I learned to love vegetables. And protein is so important I'd just eat that if nothing else was readily available. But don't eat a lot of beef. It kills a weight loss program fast.

And I wouldn't give up caffeine right away, but you probably will lose taste for it at some point. Well, from soft drinks anyway. Coffee still tastes good to me, though I don't need it to wake up now.

Caffeine is ok for some people... but if she is at a stand still... there may be a hormone or cortisol problem... Caffeine and alcohol can affect both... Also make sure you are getting enough sleep... which believe it or not also affects cortisol... and forget about those TV suppliment adds for cortisol... they are bunk... learning deep breathing, good sleep, cut alcohol and caffeine.... that is how you ower cortisol... too much exercise can also raise cortisol in some people... Oh yes I agree... veggies are great... fiber and help you digest/ break down food !

Ok, just heard from Lady Pagey, and her new dentures are giving her fits but she has lost a total of 52 pounds so far. She wanted me to let everyone know she is thinking of everyone but is just in a lot of pain and it is making her a bit grouchy.

Hope everyone is doing as well.

hi everyone and shadow. I am getting the hang of these new dentures. They sure challenged my friendly ways. Sometimes I did not feel like smiling. I have now lost 54 pounds and feel like singing. Any great advice for a weight loss buddy. Thanks dear shadow for keeping in touch.

I think meridia would be good for people that are more than "just chubby", I only have about 15 pounds to lose but that stuff made my heart beat like i was on some kind of drug~

Yesterday I officially became the most slim and trim I've ever been. I went shopping for some new pants for work, grabbed an 8, and they were too big. I slid right into a size 6.

It still slays me that I took all of these crazy pills, went on all sorts of crazy diets, and did all of that nonsense for years when I'm still finding it so easy. 1200-1300 calories a day and a minimum of 45 minutes of moderate physical activity daily and this weight has just melted off of me. It's frickin awesome.

Hmm, I really started doing what I'm doing now at the end of December/first of January. I've only lost like 1-2 pounds a week, but I think doing it like that will make it easier to keep it off.

I originally started weight training/cardio out at age 17, since then my weight has fluctuated up and down like the NASDAQ stock market lol especially when I had a medical condition as a teen and the meds messes your metabolism up. I gained a massive weight of approximately 600lbs by age 25, then when I was removed from the meds, I dropped 280lbs in a year and a half and then another 50 after I went back into weight training/cardio again by age 27. But I had left the gym and I am just one of them people prone to gain weight when I leave a gym, my weight went back up to 450lbs by age 31. I lost about 15lbs last summer and then made a resolution to commit to the gym with a personal trainer on January 25th, 2006.

Since then January 25th to now, I've lost 30lbs plus, 9 inches around my waist and 1 shirt size smaller. Now 400lbs sounds like a lot, but after carrying weight for a period of 15 years around, my legs, back and shoulders are muscular and at 6'4" I am pretty flexible than most could imagine possible for someone my weight. I go to the gym 4 to 5 times a week and my eating habits have changed drastically. I burn about 300 to 600 calories/day during Cardio and then spend about 1 to 2 hours doing weight training. But the endophin just does wonders for you once you get into the good healthy habit. =)

Now that I've drowned out your thread with my life story LOL, I do have a tip in regards to weight loss (If you don't already know it) Cardio burns calories and weight training burns more calories..... but something that has been very beneficial to me is how I eat now compared to before, even if you miss a workout day, if you eat 5 to 6 small meals daily, say 3 hours apart in small amounts and your last meal is 3 hours before you go to sleep and that is another way to drop 2.5lbs per week, of course the results vary for each person, but if you eat 5-6 small meals a day, it gets the metabolism working. I think I've eaten more veggies and fruits in 3 months than I ever have in my entire life lol

I don't normally like veggies but I don't eat them because I am hungry, I eat them to nourish my body to be energetic and healthy.

Hi ... Would you mind if I joined the group?
First ... congrats to everyone that has been losing!

I have some weight that I would like to lose.
I am hoping that I am actually serious about losing the weight this time!

Recently I have been kayaking on the weekend and I do yoga almost every day.
I am much healthier/ flexible than I was last year ... and healthier than the year before that but have not really taken off any weight.

I thought I might take a spinning class. The spinning class is in a room that not everyone is watching. I always feel overwhelmed at the gym. To many machines and people! I read thru all the posts and noticed that the weights were definitely considered a must ... I suppose that I will have to eventually find my way to that end of the gym!

I have made quite a few adjustments to my eating habits and will probably have to make more changes as I move along. I don't eat meat/ fish/ chicken - so I get most of my protein from tofu, beans, eggs, cottage cheese and low-fat cheese (low-fat 3grams fat and 6 grams protein). I was told that I should be eating 50 grams of protein a day - which is a lot when you are not eating meat. (1 egg has only 6 grams of protein). I was also told that wheat grass is the best thing since slice bread ... not sure how true it is but I have been taking that every second day - figured it couldn't hurt.

Welcome aboard.

Yes...doing some form of weight training is needful to help build muscle which is more metabolically costly and therefore helps you to burn the calories more effeciently and for longer periods than cardio alone will.

As far as your diet goes it is best to eat 5-6 small meals a day with some form of protein at each meal. Cut the refined carbs. Make sure to get your efa's (I recommend fish oil). And if you are doing an ova-lacto vegetarian diet it should be ok. Increased protein intake is a good thing. Depends on your goals but .5-1 grams of protein per pound is a good start. Also drinking .5-.8 ounces per pound of fluids like water, juice, milk will help immensely. Some people report good results with green tea as well.

Not so sure about the wheat grass since we aren't hebivores. I have heard it is supposed to be good for you but I have yet to see any sorrt of scientific documentation.

Good luck.

Sounds like everyone is having great results. 1-2 pound weight loss per week is the best because then the weight loss is mostly fat rather than muscle. And that is the goal after all isn't it? To discard fat and keep the muscle?

Thanks for the advice Kevin ...

How else can I get my efa's withouth eating fish oil. (I don't eat fish - nothing that has eyes ...). I do have flaxseed oil that I take - will that do the same thing? I also had unrefined safflower oil that I was using in replace of regular oil.

I did try to find a nutritionist locally that works with vegetarians but am having some trouble with that. Met and paid 2 of them but once there - both spent the majority of the time educating me on the importance of eating meat. (same thing with the trainer that I hired earlier in the year.) I do understand that being a vegetarian is not for everyone but I am 100% times healthier since making the change. (just over 1 year now.) It was an "instant stop" to eating fast food for me!

I was not clear on the protein ratio that you gave above. So, if someone was a 100 pounds - how much protein should they be eating ...

Cutting refined carbs --- SHAME! --- I don't think I met a carb that I didn't like! I wish there was a "carb diet" out there - how cool would that be?
But I will cut back/ out - what is that saying ... Nothing tastes as good as thin feels!

I am off to my first spinning class today and if I survive that will take a yoga class - or will crawl home into the bathtub -- I will let you know how it goes! I have wanted to try it for almost a year! Today is a good day to try it because it gives me some recovery time before spending the weekend kayaking .... (yeah!!)

Kathleen.

Well you can get some of the efa from flaxseed oil. Perhaps try Udo's Choice oil. It is a mixture oil that has a complete mix of efa.

you didn't say if you were ova lacto vegan or not. If you are great. If not then you will need to try gettign your proteins as a mix of things to get a complete amoutn of aminos.

For the protein...for a person who weighs 100 pounds that would be 100 grams of protein.

Yes, most nutritionists, trainers, dieticians are going to try to get you to eat some form of meat. You might look into the vegan form of whey protein. I am not sure what it is or how it tastes but increasing the protein intake will help with discarding fat.

Have fun at the spinning class. I am pretty sure it wore you out if it was your first one.

Karen,
It sounds as if you are right on track. If you have lost so much muscle, you have to remember that when you begin exercising again & putting that muscle back onto your body it is normal to even GAIN weight in the beginning.
Since muscle weighs more than fat on the scale, it would be wise to continue exactly as you are doing with one exception. Check your progress by the way you look in the mirror & the way your clothes fit you -- rather than what the scale says. Weigh in less often so that you do not damper your ideas about your progress based upon what the scale says.

Have you ever gone to an ashram? I went to one last month & the information I learned during my time there about Vegetarianism, yoga, meditation etc was wonderful.
The questions you ask about oils & proteins would certainly be answered, plus the rigorous activity schedule is likely to increase metabolism & take off some weight.
The ashram I went to is in Grass Valley California, but I know there are others around the country......

Someone said cardio is the way to go and I have to agree. Cardio workout's are basically easy as pie, I ran about 9 miles up and down a relatively steep hill this morning. anarobic training though is tough you have to deal with pain from weight lifting and so lifting really isnt worth it, and for guy's: There are alternatives to weights for getting buff, I like to stretch alot and run hills. I'm a pretty well rounded athlete with a well rounded training regime as I do jump-rope, dot-drills, and run. I'm pretty strong at being very heavy yet not at all fat (I weigh 175 which is pretty buff).

my daily walking and drinking water and eating sensibly have trimmed 56 pounds off of me. I am getting the hang of these new dentures and learning how to chew my veggies as long as the pieces of veggies are small. I would love at a future point to chew baby carrots. Not right at present but it is a goal. Maybe by my birthday next month. Yahoo...Thanks pals for sticking by me thru it all. Each of you are doing great.........

I like to do a little bit of everything for exercise. I definitely feel like I am seeing results from the weight lifting and that it is worth it. It also helps me with the cardio, less pain if the muscles are stronger. I am HOPING to hit my goal weight before I go to Florida June 1. Wish me luck, everybody! I have 5-6 pounds to go. I'd like to lose a little more yet after that, but I will fall w/in AMA guidelines real soon and I am HAPPY about that.

Glad to read that everybod is doing so well.
