*still has not read House of Sand and Fog*

I'm partial to books that have been adapted to film (usually rather badly, which helps when it comes to preferring the book)...John Irving is kind of schmaltzy, but The World According to Garp is definitely worth reading. I stress - the movie is crap. And I will read any biography about any Golden Age actor/actress. The more tragic the better. I highly recommend those written by Charles Higham, except the one about Marlene Dietrich. *snore*

Postscript: Danielle Steele makes me retch.

I'd say the two I go back and read again and again every few years...Mysts of Avalon by m.z bradley and Sons and Lovers by dh lawrence.
Both are so rich every time you read then there's a detail you forgot about.

I'm a binge reader, and read for pleasure.
There are so many good books, and I read a few myself. I'm surprised nobody mentioned Moby**** by Herman Melville. I loved that book. Never tried to analyse it, and I know there is much I missed, but I couldn't put it down the first time I read it. Great story, and its like every sentence is a poem. I ain't real educated or anything, but I love that book.

East or Eden: never could figure out about the old Chinese/Japanese guy that goes fishing.

Lately all I read are " Medieval Murder Mysteries" where the HERO is a woman . Usually a nun or the Queens servant. I used to read Conan The Barbarian. Am I getting civilized or what??

For me, it's the Anne McCaffrey Pegasus and Rowan series, hands down, but I also thoroughly enjoy several of her other series, though I've never gotten into the Pern books.

My all time favorite author is Terry Pratchett....but apparently in my area only repatriated Brit's read him, so it's hard to find his books second hand (my preferred method of buying books).

My all time favorite book, well series actually, is the Earth's Children series by Jean Auel...good stuff

Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels - because it makes me believe that people are reborn in life as well as death

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver - because I relate with the protagonists, like the way the story is told from different points of few.

Books by Canadian Author Timothy Findley who recently died - because his characters are believable and he has profound insight into the human condition and how war kills not only physically but emotionally and spiritually. Never forget that soldiers may come home from war without a scratch on them but spiritually dead. We are not meant to kill nor to watch one another die over and over again.

Books by Margaret Atwood - because she captures the Canadian experience and the human psyche. Her characters are well developed and fascinating.

Classics - Orwell 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World and Tolstoy's Anna Karenina because I relate to the protagonists.

The Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving - because I am both Lily and Frannie and Egg who was always ready.

A Prayer for Owen Meaning - by John Irving because there is so much of Owen in me.
