I go to Alberta to work often, as you don't have enough of your own experts in my field and pay me very well indeed to supervise your slow workers, about half the speed of other Canadian guys.
America provides a huge market for the rest of the world to sell it's wares in. If they ever shut their doors and go for self-reliance, which they will if they have to, it will impact many economies the world over. A large part of the world's economic growth is due to America's participation as a willing consumer. If that changes, the USA will not suffer.

Please, the US has been using Canada and Mexico as a resource warehouse for decades. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a huge blow to Canadian industry if the US shut its door, but we'd find other markets. (Like the Japanese or the Europeans.)
The US, on the other hand, would be completely screwed. Especially with their current "Use-and-abuse-the-environment" administration. Cutting off the flow of resources from Canada would literally bomb the American economy.

Posted: 1/13/2005 11:21:58 AM | | x-services style eh vancouverite????...who are you kidding....ill pick you up at the airport if you want some that bad..... right now, china is investing billions in canada, the majority of that is in alberta....its just the beginning of a certian future that will grow exponentially....heres a little FACT....on average, country wide, in china...electricial consumption is the equivalent of a 100watt lightbulb per person per year...now thats changing and fast....people in china want 5 light bulbs, and a washing machine and a car and fuel for that car and new ways of refining minerals into workable mediums....it goes on and on and on.....they will and are turning to canada, not the US, for resources, and expertise to help them get the job done. china also has plans, as well as russia to adopt the euro within the next 5 years.....a far more stable currency then the usd.....guess what happens then...any ideas...hmmm.........in the not so distant future your goning to be working for the chinese pal and your skillset is anything but unique...the reason why you have the opportunity to work in alberta and make a good wage is because we create jobs for import schmucks like yourself and also due to recent increases in long term foreign investments from other countrys like china, russia, massive german investments in ontario and of course the US. that is the result of a strong and stable and most importantly, predictable canadian economy.......so here in alberta they pay you very well do they....hmmm.....i guess canada's not so bad then after all then....we all now know that you'll take a dig at canada every chance you get...even though you live here.....you are a parasite in every sense..........now, lets also remember...alberta is a debt free province...the only one by the way.....is that not a direct testiment to our workforce????...or do you have some other magical explanation of why america is the reason for that!?! america this, america that, i think its time you move to alabama,........or is alberta's debt free status just the result of some canadian bashing european b!tch, providing us with his god-like european exclusive skills and zen wisdom????..........and once again you generalize canadians!!! suggesting that every man in alberta is only capable of working at half the speed of men from the other 9 provinces and 2 territories........you sit on your mushroom and you spew this sh!t like you have a clue about what your talking about...well clearly you do not vancouverite.....just move to the US...you owe it to yourself | |

Uhm, as an Albertan myself I don't really want to make any comments about the work force. A recent Canada-wide study actually cited Alberta as the hardest-working province in Canada, and Edmonton as the hardest-working Canadian city. (In terms of hours worked, time between vacations, yadda, yadda)
That said, I don't think the work-force has much to do with Alberta being debt free. Give credit to the pool of resources Alberta's sitting on right now for that. Well, that and the Klein government's decision to ignore all social issues and pay down the debt during the 90's...
I don't like Klein, and don't think he could have done what he did without the magical oil prices that happened during the late 90's.. But to give credit where credit is due, he attacked Alberta's debt like it had tea-bagged his sister... | |
