| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/16/2006 2:16:28 PM | Hi Mae B...Just a word of caution on the aerobic exercise for the lower body. If you replace fat with muscle, you will be healthier (most important), but you may find that your size does not change as much as you might like. The fat is replaced with muscle, but your jean size might remain the same.
Suggestion...work on the overall body when it comes to weight loss through healthy eating and regular reduction of portion size (believe it or not, decreasing your meal sizes by only a tablespoon a week will help you lose weight without a drastic diet approach) and target the upper body with the more weight intensive aerobic exercise. Use stretching and toning only for the lower body. This way you tone the muscles in the lower body without building them up while losing the weight through proper eating.
I'm no expert, but have done some research into different body types and metabolism rates. All of us are different and need to go about losing weight in different ways. Many women who have lower body weight issues overexercise the lower body and find themselves as big as when they started, which is beyond frustrating! The best thing is to find out what body type you have and target your weight loss smart.
Another great tip...look into the fat content/carb content of some of the foods you eat most often. You may find that there are some simple changes you could make in your regular diet that would do wonders for weight loss. I recently did some looking into this myself and found that one of my favs mac and cheese is one of the WORST things for your waistline! Here's some examples that might shock you...
1 cup of macaroni and cheese (who eats only 1 cup??!) is 406 calories, 18 grams of fat and you have to walk 81 minutes to burn it off.
1 small commercial chicken pot pie is 498 calories, 26 grams of fat and you have to walk 100 minutes to burn it off.
Cold cuts Sub sandwich, 456 calories, 19 grams of fat and you have to walk 91 minutes to burn it off.
Chicken wings (I know, none of us want to know how bad chicken wings are!) each wing is 99 calories and 7 grams of fat, so if you go out and order 10 wings, you're looking at 990 calories, 70 grams of fat and would have to walk 200 minutes to burn it off. OUCH. And that doesn't even take into account the fries that come with it!
And finally, alcohol...each beer is 151 calories and takes 30 minutes of walking to burn off. Red wine (1/2 cup) is 90 calories and takes 18 minutes to walk off. We often forget that what we drink adds to our waists too!
Good luck Mae B and all others trying their damnest to get to their ideal weight! You CAN do it!

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/16/2006 3:52:05 PM | Thought I'd pop in and update.
When my neice got married in January of this year, I was wearing a size 20 bottom.
Now I am wearing a size 14 bottom in most things (egads I actually bought 4 skirts from Old Navy in size 14!!!)
But my weight still won't drop below 200 lbs *grr* I keep bouncing between 206.4 and 204.6

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/16/2006 4:54:37 PM | To anyone investing in machines:
What worked for me was the Tony Little Gazelle Freestyle. I'm down 70 pounds. 2 hours a day, everyday and you'll see results within days. (he says 30 minutes every other day, i took it to the extreme--and when i say 2 hours, it's 2 hours throughout the day, not consecutive)
Park it in front of a TV/DVD and watch the hours on the clock fly by. Do you know how many times I've watched Friends Seasons 1 through 10 on that thing?

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/16/2006 5:13:13 PM | WooooooHoooooooooooooooooooooooooo CAGE!
Congrats girl!
And keep your butt moving.
OK......I'm a frikin slacker. End of story. I used to work Weird long hours (that are never the same), completely screwd me up.
Monday I am starting a new position within my company that is a 10 minute walk from home. I switched my kids into a daycare that is a 5 minute walk from my home, on the way to work. I'm burying the car key. No more driving. (i used to put over 6000K on my car a month for work)
And thanks Magtag.. but I wouldn't be upset if my legs ended up being extremely muscular, I'm at the point where i need some serious muscle to burn the fat fuel i'm storing (if i were to spontaneously combust, I'd take out a city block)
Walk on peeps | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 9:57:18 AM | After my 135lb weight loss I have been going up and down 10lbs and not losing more - Patio nights and BBQ's have helped me do that YIKES! I am now looking for a treadmill - anyone got one for sale CHEAP! If you're using it just to hang your clothes on I wouldn't mind using it!!! I have to try and go back to laying off the treats! I'ts all about lifestyle and mine has been slipping! It's never easy, but it can be done, so I'm going back for that goal I was supposed to be at by now! | |
|
| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 11:22:44 AM | @leeane. I am sure there are treadmills out there for a reasonable price. Mountain news is where I sold mine when I cleaned out my closets and hung up my clothes... lol
I do want to throw out a little word of advice for all those looking to lose the weight. There is a book called 'Fit for Life'. It is NOT a diet book but instead a way of creating a lifestyle around eating that allows not only weight loss but a healthy body as well.
I am not a thin woman by any stretch of the imagination but I have followed this type of eating style for years and have enjoyed the benifits.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 1:56:15 PM | One thing I did to help me lose weight was to stop using sugar in anything. Now I use splenda and have switched drinking regular sodas to diet. It's made a big difference.
Now if I could just quit eating too much starchy foods. *sigh*
|
| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 2:07:41 PM | lol yea Thats a good idea, I just gave ur post a thought perfect fit and that makes complete sense, I drink prolly about 4 coffees a day 2 tp of sugar per coffee...wow thats like 8 tsp of sugar a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD IDEA ON THE SPLENDA! Jus gettin used to the tase.... | |
|
| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 2:11:55 PM | Hi I_HAVE_IT
I found splenda to be the best tasting one out of all the artificial sweeteners. It is pricier then the others but since I only use it in my morning cup of tea a box of packets lasts me well over a month.
When I found out 1 can of pop has 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar PER CAN that just blew me away. I changed right then and there. It took some getting used to the taste but now I find sugar way too sweet.
I found some sugarfree ice cream in the store yesterday. THAT was a Godsend in this heat. :-)
|
| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 2:15:20 PM | | OH yea I always drink diet pop! I actually prefer the taste,,,,mabye that will happen with splenda! Thats a toughy tho I'm a kool aid kid for sure!!! Its all about forcing myself tho, I switched from cream to milk ,I just dont buy cream so I have no choice but to use milk in my coffee! Guess I'll do the same with the sugar and splenda....hey Perfect fit any tips on indoor e3xcersise? | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 2:24:30 PM | I have a recumbent exercise bike that is downstairs where we watch tv. I also have a bunch of fitness videos and dvds from Richard Simmons to Kathy Smith. I mainly use those in the winter when it gets too snowy or cold to walk outside and change them around when I get bored of one. Also if you have stairs you can do step ups on the bottom stair. I'm up to 30 before I tire out too much, and if it is too hot in your house to exercise in this weather, wait until after dark and go for a walk. Once I couldnt sleep and went walking around my area at 3 am.
Koolaid is great with splenda. I love the cherry flavour. You can make your own iced tea with it too. Brew up a pot of tea, let it steep to the strength you like, then remove the tea bags and let it sit until it is cool. Pour some in a glass, add ice and a couple packets of splenda and you have sugar free iced tea.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 2:36:44 PM | The stairs! Right on! Like I said I havnt done any dieting for a botu 3 yrs. I sold the excersise bike in a yard sale about 2 yrs ago and As for videos I think I have one or too. Yea walking at night is my new plan, I work till 9 pm so it kinda works out perfectly. Homeade tea with splenda eh?? I was thinking of jus switching from kool- aid to crystal light, that way I dont miss the taste. But for sure I will try it! thanx again for the great advice! | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 2:45:27 PM | alright I haven't read the whole thread.....congrats Cagewench your rockin and good for you!
I'm not think either and I do eat a little different than most but like Leeanne Brantford Patio nights and eating those battered mushrooms That I know will kill me one day were just so yummie temptation got me a few times....I'm taking a vow to not eat them anymore so Leeanne if you see me spank me fast!
Other than those damn things........I'm pretty good...I will suggest LOTS of water as much as you can drink....if you have to have flavor try Crystal light & or get the Crystal light sticks to take with your bottled water at work, school the beach etc....
Stay away from Sugar sugar sugar it's evil and confuses your body in many evil ways... sugar fills you for now but you will end up eating more often and prolly eating more sugar products.....
The calcium from milk is good for you as well as the natural fat that Milk offers However Milk also has sugar in it....so be careful not to drink too much milk....For calcium try vegetables.
Another evil culprit is White bread.....white flour.....full of sugar,,,,,that's why restaurants offer free bread with meals it will fill you up for now and leave you hungry for later.....
Eat lots of protein red meat and white meat too.....
Organic Sea salt is good for you but will take a little bit for you to get used to.....is really good and helps your body work properly. Use instead of regular table salt that we are used to.
Dulse or Dulse flakes Dulse is a good source of dietary requirements. A handful will provide more than 100% of the daily amount of Vitamin B6, 66% of Vitamin B12, a days supply of iron and fluoride (great for strong teeth), and it is relatively low in sodium and high in potassium.
Everybody loves Popeye's favorite meal.....spinch yup before you say forget try it in a salad you might be surprised how much you like it...
Eating is a lifestyle choice the more research you do and the more open minded you are about truely changing how & what you eat.Learning how your body really works and what foods will increase it's function you might just be surprised how easy it is to introduce new ways of eating everyday. Add in getting physical and your on your way.
The book that I refer to for learning is Nourishing Traditions teaching you cooking and loads of info....challenges what we know....it's about 40 bucks

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/31/2006 2:54:06 PM | Oh the guys would love to see us spanking each other!!! Yup it's the patio night food that's killing me - got to get back in my eating and exercise routine - losing 135lbs is a feat in itself but I have some more to go. I would love to start a walking group if any of you girls are interested - oh wait boys as well!!! | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 8/23/2006 11:38:42 AM | There are approximately 8.25 "a fews" in a shitload But thats metric, not imperial
Update! (mostly because I had to go find this thread on page frikin 30!)
Going on vacation for 2 weeks on Sept 1st. The eating part is ok because it's a timeshare resort and we have our own kitchen in an apt type unit, but I worry about the exercise. Do I just say screw it and deal with the aftermath when I get home?
I'd like to keep up as much as I can, but we're going to florida, not my fav place in the world since I; a) have heatstroke issues b) burn in 1.3 seconds upon exposure to the sun no matter how much sunblock i use it seems c) have child kidnapping trauma instilled in my brain thanks to my mother (i have 3 kids 6,3 & 2) so i'll be on super high alert whenever out in public
I think maybe i'll try pool exercises or something. Swim around with 3 kids on my back etc.
Any vacation tips and pointers?

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 8/23/2006 4:29:17 PM | A walking group would be a great idea maybe a few of them according to location and schedual, I had lost 40lbs by walking and loved it , but that was in small town BC, not used to the big city and a somewhat nervous about walking around the city alone. Its just to bad that all these fitness clubs want your soul, first born, and an arm an a leg to join!! If any one in the hamilton mountain area would be interseted in walking in the early pm hours around 5 or 6 drop me an email would love to get back to it | |
