| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 1/21/2006 5:15:10 PM | Well, shoot me now for stepping in here..... But...
I have found the singel BEST way to lose weight (and I have known a few people who needed to) is a fairly simple method. It takes a few small steps and yields great results. Everyone is different however, so the specifics are kind of touch-and-go.
#1 Forget about all the "Diet pills" and "Fast Track" methods. Waste of time and money. Forget all the normal "Eat less, forget junk" rules. Too hard to follow, and you break em you gain weight. The idea here is not to "Lose weight" per say.. it's to USE weight. When it comes to weight loss, it is the opposite of most rules (use it or lose it) - it is use it AND lose it. You need to change your bodies' metabolism, and start using the stored energy you have.
#2 Get out and DO things. Anything really.. Walking, Jogging, Skating, playing in the yard with the kids, shoveling the driveway, raking leaves, pushing a stroller, swimming, and so on - IDEALLY outside is better than inside. Fresh air, open spaces, it's a feeling, as much as excercise. Even if all you can do is walk down the stairs from your second floor appartment, instead of taking the elevator. Do it. Trade in a few modern conveniences, and exert yourself more.
Now, the keys here, are simple, in concept. Increse your metabolism, and use energy. Using energy we all know how to do it... Just making the decision is the hard part. LOL
Of course, increasing one's emtabolism is usually a challenge... There are foods out there that work for some, and foods that do not work for them. You wil have to find your own "secret foods" so to speak. This way, once you have started to increase your metabolism (there are even some multi-vitamin suplpiments that do this for you... not sure how they work however, I have never had anyone take them...), your body wil use more of the food you consume.. This will give you more energy as well, and you will be able to do more.. it is a self-supporting regime. As you get settled into it, your new found energy gives you drive to get out more, which burns the fat, and the food you eat, leaving you feeling good, and looking good. And of course, sucess is a good thing. LOL
Hope that helps someone wiht a new idea, maybe a new way at looking at losing the weight they want to lose. Just remember, before anything - you need to decide to lose it for YOU. Not to get a date. LOL Write down a list of reasons to lose the weight. When that list is complete, and you are motivated, then make the changes, and refer to that list once a week or so, as a reminder why you are doing everything you are doing.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 1/21/2006 8:09:36 PM | Cagewench ... wow .. did you keep a journal .. if you asked me what I weighed in each grade .. ummmm ... errrrrrm .. lol
I have been pretty lucky in the weight department all my life - have always been very active (tomboy at heart .. ;)) - never weighed myself except for when the doc did it when i had my yearly physical - weight is irrelevant it's all in how you are built and proportion.
Unfortunately - a few years back i hurt my back and went from being very active to almost nothing - gained 80 lbs over 2 years gradually - never thought my frame could hold that much weight ... and of course it couldn't and told me so ... sluggish, knee probs .. you name it .. haha
I am very well versed in working out - became a passion of mine way back before the back probs - just the challenge of working hard and doing different things to shape your body and feeling fantastic - .. I love my food and know what is good and bad, but always was able to eat whatever .. and poof no probs gettin if off if I wanted to ... but dayum gets harder as you get older to get those pounds off .. haha
I have 30 lbs I need to lose - when I tell people this - they are like "what" ... you gonna disappear .. lol ... that is just a personal choice and where I am comfortable - it's amazing what clothes hide eh Kat? ... lol
Anyhoo - from what I know Imma gonna give all you gals a little info:
Carbs - great for energy, but keep it at the complex level (broccolli and other veggies, plain oatmeal (in moderation), potatoes (in moderation) ... look up complex carbs on the net for a list - stay away from too many starchy carbs
Protein - You want to keep the protein higher than the carbs (egg whites, tuna .. again look up a list .. haha)
Fats - in moderation - every body needs some sort of fat
4 - 6 small meals per day - Protein percentage higher than carbs and fat being at the lowest (duh ... lol). This will keep you from overeating, having huge meals and snacking.
As for exercise - cardio at a steady pace for a longer period of time is better than higher impact over a short term .... mix it up ... continually shock your body .. don't get into a routine ... I can't remember who asked about carrying more weight on lower body ... those rotating stairs at the gym (not the stairmaster) is a fantastic machine for this. And gals ... don't be afraid of lifting weights ... the more muscle you have on your body ... the better it helps burn fat.
OK ... enough of the rambling .. I could type about this forever .. haha
Now ... time for ME to put my actions where my mouth (errrrr fingers ... lol) are ... ;)

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 1/21/2006 9:13:52 PM | It's all in a change of eating habits, which I have done over the past year and have lost 60lbs. The weight didn't appear in one month and you shouldn't expect to lose it in a month. Losing weight and keeping it off is all in learning what food really is. Food should be for energy and be tasteful. Energy can be your good carbs and protein, tasteful can be done with spices and not fat based sauces.
Cut the sugar and flour based crap out for a couple weeks. Yes it will be hard but if you are truly dedicated and WANT to lose the stop making excuses and do it. Nobody can do anything until they are ready to, I was ready to change my eating habits and did it, not ready to quit smoking though :)
Diet is a nasty word and is a word that makes people fail. One person said they cut out coke and lost, that is a change in eating habits. Pop contains at least if not more 10 teaspoons of sugar! Go for an organic 12 grain or flax bread instead of the white if you must have bread. Choose whole wheat pasta instead of the regular and open a can of crushed tomatoes for the sauce instead of the other stuff full of salt and sugar. All veggies are NOT good, such as corn and carrots. Check out a diabetic website and see a list of foods that are good and bad, good way to cut back on the starch and sugar.
ALWAYS eat breakfast to kick start your metabolism. I try to make time in the morning but at 5am if I want 10 more mins of sleep I through my oatmeal in a container and either raisins, nuts, frozen fruit in another, then get some skim milk at work and throw the oatmeal in the microwave...and I don't mean that instant crap either, buy the actual oats. Lunch is normally a salad with protein..chicken, tuna, beef, pork...mixed in with it, and try to make that my 'big' meal of the day.
Off hand I forget all the foods that can't be eaten together as it sours the food while trying to digest, google it.
Another thing I also do is drink at least one cup of green tea a day, usually more and other varieties. Don't deprive yourself of your favorite treat, just do it in moderation..instead of a whole chocolate bar, have half.
I could go on and will later, but I have 'dieted' all my life..weight watchers, jenny craig, grapefruit etc, none worked as I put the weight back on. I wasn't ready and I didn't learn HOW to eat properly.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 1/21/2006 10:41:48 PM | My success in weight loss started by walking to work; 45 minutes each way there and back for one week. I dropped 8 lbs as a result. It was a real motivator that if the pounds came off that easily I could do more. I joined the Y (it works out to about about $1.25 a day), replaced white bread with multigrains, cut back significantly on pasta, drank water instead of sugary stuff (once you get used to it you don't want to switch back) and instead of starving the day now eat four or five light meals a day, which gets the metabolism going. Swimming burns the most calories, and cardio machines, like the crosstrainer, will do wonders everywhere (arms, legs, butt). In four quick months I went from a 36-inch waist to 31 and dropped a total 33 pounds. Feel better, breathe better and have more energy (and I still allow myself to have junk food if i want something different). I'm now at 164 and haven't been this fit since I was 14, almost 20 years ago.
Good luck to you all. | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 1/21/2006 11:17:10 PM | Just a note-muscle and fat weigh the same, its a misconception that muscle weighs more then fat, learned it in school.Equal weights of any substance still weigh the same. Muscle is DENSER than fat. What's the difference? Pay attention, this is important. It doesn't weigh more. A kilo of muscle weighs exactly the same as a kilo of fat. But the kilo of muscle will be smaller than the kilo of fat. It will take up less space.Putting on muscle is good for you. While the needle on the scale might not go down, the size of your jeans certainly will. Besides, muscle burns fat even when you're asleep. It needs to burn fat just to maintain itself. How can something that burns fat while you sleep be bad? Muscle is more dense than fat, it does not weigh more. Hope this helps. Angel

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 1/22/2006 2:53:15 PM | Thanks... though I don't have or use a step counter - I'm not sure exactly what the benefit to one of those items is.
Or is there a set # of steps a person *ought* to take in a day?

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 1/22/2006 3:10:15 PM | and not just the steps, the speed you are walking has a lot to do with it. Window shopping may help to begin with if your body isn't used to it but after a week or so of doing the same pace and distance everyday isn't going to help. Again, getting healthy is all about changing the way you eat and excercise, not that nasty dieting word.
I started up water aerobics again and swim lengths, great excercise.
