| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/10/2006 10:52:15 AM | I recently lost 135lbs - turned out I did not have a metabloism. My family DR. has known me since I was 7yrs old, he knew that there was some reason I could not loose weight since I was very active, into dance, karate, going to the gym for weight training, aerobics etc. A simple blood test showed that although I did not have diabeties my blood sugars were out of wack and in turn threw my system out of wack. I am now on Metformin (a diabetic med.) and in the first couple of months with proper food and exercise I lost 60lbs. The rest came off slower over the next 6 months but non the less came off. Most family Dr's now know of this test and support for over weight people who might be at risk for diabeties, heart attack or stroke. It is really important to know that a life style change in what you eat and how you exercise is important (not a diet of any kind). Also reducing stress is just as highly important because stress causes weight gain. *Note this was all done for my health and not vanity - both my parents died from Stroke - Heart attack and Diabeties. My Mother had her first stroke at age 46 and was house bound from that point on changing our entire families life. Both were very sick for many many years. I am 43 and don't want to go down that road. | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/11/2006 7:37:53 AM | Ok I hope I am not too late to post my story...A new friend reccomended I post on forums more and maybe make a few new friends since I just moved to the ottawa area!!
I always thought I had a weight problem...I am about 5'5-5'6 and in HS weighed 130 lbs....I got up around 160lbs with my ex when I was 24...We had been dating since I was 19....He went away to basic training and being alone in our apartment gave me the time to eat a strict veggie diet...I lost 20lbs in 2 months...Which is not good but do you ever notice how easy it comes off when you are younger?
Well when he was stationed in borden we talked about having kids...The military does that to you...They like to push the family thing (I think to keep up moral) Keep the men happy thinking they have a great life...Anyways..I got pregnant right away when we started trying....I went from 145lbs to 189lbs...
We were now on a base in NS away from all my family and I had friends there that I had made in borden...But my ex was never there...Made comments about my weight when he was. To be honest he thinks it's motivational to ask me if I really needed to "eat that" stuff like that...I am not here to bash men...just stating my person experience....After many arguments (most of them just about him showing up alot more)and me sleeping in another room for over a year we split up...My son was 2 1/2.
So I moved back to Ontario...He never thought I would make it on my own...HAHAHA...I had been on my own basically since I got pregnant...Anyways I was 180lbs single....28 years old..
After living with my mom for a while I got my own place...with my ex's motivation...He started being nice now...But the weight was still there...Happened to find a nice place that one of my long time friends lived in as well. We startedt going to the gym and I lost 24lbs...
So now years later I have kept it off and people are amazed when I tell them I am 156lbs. I see every extra pound when I look at myself but others don't seem to. I am 32 and still single after a few selective relationships. And it is my weight and baby stretchmarks that are doing it....I need help with this...
I need to ask you ladies who have had children how you got rid of the "baby pouch" That is basically my problem...I can walk or exercise the rest off...I just need to motivation...And being in a new place is gonna do that. I keep telling myself when the bitter cold is over I am outta the apartment and getting this weight off for good...I wanna weight less than I did in HS....I wanna be at least 125lbs....So that is 30lbs for me...But honestly I joke with my friends that I must really weight 130 and my boobs are 20lbs...lmao...
Well anyways now that I have written a novel...Hopefully I am not too late...maybe some low fat recipes could be shared here as well....I find if it is tasty I am more willing to eat it. I hate trying to eat like a rabbitt...and it's not that healthy.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/16/2006 8:58:32 AM | | @cagewench, you're metabolism actually speeds up about 25% during PMS. So it's the best time to lose weight. However, it's usually the hardest time to not give into your cravings. So keep at it and you'll get there. | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/16/2006 10:32:43 AM | This is an awsome topic! I'm in for the support of weight loss. I'll admit, I need to shed a few...ok maybe a little bit more than a few. Here is a success story. My sister is 5'7, last summer she weighed 212lbs. A friend of her's is a doctor from Egypt. He put her on this diet and she's now...today.... 146lbs. She looks great and she hasn't gained one pound back. It took her 6months to lose it and believe me, she does not like discipline but she did it. The key of keeping it off is a 40 min. walk everyday and a grapefruit before you go to bed. Here is what she did just to help burn the fat and lose almost 70 lbs!! I know it sounds like it's not much food but within the first 3 day's your body will adjust and you wont be so hungry. Also, you will "plateu"....meaning you wont lose any for a week or two after you've lost 20lbs or more, just mix up your breakfast with your dinner OR change your snack with another low fat snack. Let your body know you've made a change in food.
Breakfast: Bran muffin-no butter OR omega eggs (whites) OR Slice or Flax bread with real cheese. AND a glass of Palmagraite guice
Snack: fruit of choice
Lunch: HUGE Chicken grilled salad with balsamic dressing..low fat...the key is to eat as much as you can of salad...no limit
Snack: 6-7 blackberries/ 1/4 cup dry spoon size shreded wheat
Dinner: Bowl of Flax cerial and blueberries/strawberries
Snack: Glass of palmogranite juice and yogurt (bar)
Before bed eat a grapefrut!
Remeber to drink lots of water, at least 5-7 bottles a day another tip is to eat tons of berries!! They detoxify your system and help burn the fat. I've started this diet just Monday, 13th and i've lost 6lbs already!!

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/16/2006 10:56:43 AM | Just wanted to note...if you do plan on trying this diet, let me know. Every other week, it's best to add and remove different foods from the diet. This way you don't get bored with eating the same foods everyday. Last thing you want is a reason to cheat...lol. Just remember, with this diet IF YOU STICK TO IT....your guaranteed to lose the weight within roughly 4-6 months. We're all human and we do like to get out every now and then and have a few drinks. If you do, visit this site to help choose a low cal. alcohic drink. http://www.medicinalfoodnews.com/vol06/issue4/drinks.htm Copy and Paste in brower.
Also, I have 4 friends that also completed this diet. One who HAD breast cancer. She's in the best shape now after losing 88lbs! Another who wore a size 20 pants, she's now wearing a size 8! Let me know if any decide to try it.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/16/2006 7:56:20 PM | | Oh yes...the maintenance! Well, if you happen to gain 5lbs back just cut your calories by half for one week. In order for a person to gain a pound, they must consume more than 3000 calories per day for seven days. I was told this by a dietition. To maintain your weight be aware of what your eating EVERYDAY! It's a lifetime change, not just once you lose the weight. My sister calls me everyday about her weight...it's new and she's proud. I would be too. She even cheats too. BUT, she makes up for it the next day. If she's out for dinner at a resteraunt, she'll have whatever she wants but doesn't fill up. What I do, Is I keep a scale in the kitchen....weird but it works. When I have that craving for some chips or sweets, that scale will be looking right at me...lol. The guilt and knowing how much weight i've lost takes over and I dont' eat. | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/17/2006 1:12:00 AM | My weight fluctuates like crazy... for the last 10 or 12 years I've been going up and down between around 215 and 235. Only once in that time have I actually been below 200 lbs. According to those silly height/weight charts I'm at least 50 pounds overweight. I'm one of those people that carries it well though... most people guess me at around 190-200 which at 6'1" isn't too bad I don't think, but the charts and my doctors tests say that I should be around 170 at my height and build... I'm not happy with the amount of the weight that has changed from muscle to fat since I started working a desk job rather than the factory work I used to do, but I think I still look pretty good.
The thing that gets me is that at my last physical my family doctor did some body fat percentage testing and apparently I'm like 2% away from falling into the "obese" category. I know I should be trying harder to do something about it (especially since there's a lot of history of heart problems in my family) but I'm not someone who finds it easy to do that sort of thing alone. Unfortunately almost all of my friends fall into one of two categories... "too skinny to bother working out or watching their diets" or "blatantly overweight and uninterested in trying to change that" so they're no help.
I've been trying to find a workout buddy but I haven't been having any luck... the only person I know who works out is a girl who won't work out at co-ed gyms. At this point I think that if I'm going to do it I'm going to have to hire a personal trainer to kick my butt into doing it, but they're kind of pricey and it's hard to convince myself that it's worth the expense just to get rid of my love-handles.
I have to say though... after trying to buy new clothes lately, it sure would be easier to dress stylishly if I were thinner. The clothes that fit my taste just aren't cut for someone my size... or as I joked with the salesperson... "my taste in clothes is 50 pounds lighter than I am". lol
I'm rapidly getting sick of wearing sweaters and over-sized t-shirts. lol

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/17/2006 6:45:24 AM | You gotta want it!! If you mind is at a place where you're SICK, FED-UP, DISCUSTED with being overweight, then perhaps you've hit that "rock bottom". If you really truly want to lose the weight forever, then you've got to change your entire being. When you decide to become healthy you've not only got to change your eating habits, but also your daily habits down to the people you hang with. Not saying to get rid of 'em but if they go out alot to bars, resteraunts...places that can make you "cheat", then you need to change or make them aware of your goals. If you find that you're always in front of the t.v. , book you're personal trainer at that time. If you find you snack later in the evening, be sure to have vegie's in the fridge at arms reach. This is what I do. I have a personal trainer, wasn't that pricey...depends on where you go. I also use Natural Advantage, they have dietitions that help you choose the food to maintain the weight or lose the weight you don't want. OK, i cheat...lol...I have cellulite treatments and EMS treatments...Did u know that one EMS treatment is equivalent to 3hrs of a personal trainer work out! SIGN ME UP!! I wish I had of started this diet at the turn of the new year, I'd be half way to my goal already. I just started the diet that I posted earlier just this past Monday. I've lost 6.5lbs and it hasn't been a week! I'm estimating that by this monday coming, I'll be down 10lbs. All my life i've been slim but after I had my son, I find that the weight goes up and down too. I now eat certain foods with every meal...like berries, pamograite juice, yogurt...foods that help break down the fat in food we eat. If you do some research, you'll find out all the foods that can be incorporated into your daily meals that help flush the fats from your system while you digest. | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/17/2006 8:51:48 PM | This is quite cool, I am fairly new to POF completely nevermind the forums...I am glad I found this one. It seems I am not the only one in this boat...duh, do you think? Been workingon weight loss FOREVER. The last year has been the most successful...down 20 it has been slow or so slow, but I figure if it comes off slow it more likely to stay off.
Gotta go, I'll be back ! | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/20/2006 2:25:10 PM | to penumbric: try cutting out white food, potatoes, bread, pasta. Go with with whole wheat or barn, use mustard instead of mayo. Cut sugar in coffee, work your way down from cream to homo to 2percent to 1 percent, get used to it after awhile. See if friend will go swimming with you. I've managed to lose over 30 lbs. I can't salad, fruit or veggies, no nuts or grains. Have chrones, hard to diet. Change food habits, instead of donut, whole wheat toasted bagel with cream cheese or peanut butter, toasted, or low fat jam, skip butter. Lunch whole wheat bread, low fat deli meat, experiment with diff. mustards, soup. Dinner, try more chicken and fish, same, experiment, eat salad and a veggie, no potatoes, try just steak and simple salad, lettuce, tomato, onion and light dressing. this always worked for me. Good luck | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 2/20/2006 2:41:41 PM | I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet....but here's my secret. I do eat a large meal a day, but I do it in the morning. Seriously, I'll have my huge chicken meal, steak and what have you when I first get up. It took awhile for my metabolism to adapt, but it has definately worked. The reason being is that when I was in college in a nutrition class I had a prof that put it out like this....... "Although, when you come home at night and are dead tired and starved yes your body is craving it's food, but why eat all that you burned off during the day just to go to bed and let it get to your belly during your sleep?"
He was right. I do eat sensible like all the rest, I actually have to watch what I consume, but I found that eating my large meal of the day in the morning and burning it off all day as opposed to burning off yesterday definately helps to the "enth" degree. From morning on, I nibble throughout the day, eating what I want, but just not too much as I don't need to as I'm still going on my morning intake.
Oh, and a lot of soups....(non-cream based) actually aide in cutting down the cravings for food. Water being a filler like celery.
Best of luck to all.... | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 3/29/2006 2:47:27 PM | Thought I'd bring this one back up...
I'm down to 208.6 lbs and I tried on jeans at Reitman's today that were size 14 and they fit :>:>:>
eta: checked my first post in the thread and I was 221.6 on page 1 of this thread... and was posted Jan 21, 2006.
So that's 13 lbs in 68 days.
Is that a decent loss or should I have been working harder to lose more?

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 3/29/2006 3:17:57 PM | One thing I learned, losing more than 2-3 lbs a week makes it harder to keep it off, your body adjusts better to a slow loss than a quick one, I've lost 6lbs, and keeping it off is easy even when I give in to my chocolate cravings. I also find that after every 10 lbs I lose I get stuck for a few weeks before I start losing again, so don't let this discourage you, as long as you don't gain, don't worry and don't give up. I've lost a total of 36 lbs and I'm still losing. Congratulations cagewench, your doing great! | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 3/29/2006 3:25:06 PM | Cage, the standard for safe weight loss is 1-2 lbs per week. So you are just fine.
While you can loose faster, it makes the maintenance, and metabolic switch from loss to maintain harder.
I have pictures of me a few years back with a triple chin. Not pretty.
I swear I lost the same 40 lbs. over and over until I figured it out.
Am happy to say this week I got to the tightest notch on my belt (as a comforatble and normal stop, not a suck in the gut and pray...LoL) and have not been this light in 13 1/2 years. Literally since I got married.
So, that leaves me 15 lbs to go to be an average 6' and 180 lb guy.
I'm a work in progress! ~where's the bold when you need it...~

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 3/29/2006 3:32:30 PM | Dented... way to go re: your weight loss and approaching your goal!!!!
I've now decided my short-term goal is 199 lbs since when I was with my ex, I was 200 lbs when I got married and then the unhappier I was, the bigger I got.
So reaching 199 is like taking back the me I was before I was married. My long-term goal is to be 160 because I felt pretty sexy at 160 lbs and that's what I weighed when I first met my ex... so scratch that, make my long-term goal 159
|
| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 3/29/2006 3:40:51 PM | It makes me happy.
I can always check your progress cage. Give it a test run and see if you feel sexy at any given weight.
Hmmm....Yup....
~wipe drool~
I remember that phase. When I could first see my intercostals (rib muscles) and the vauge outline of a six pack where my molson muscle used to be...Damn that felt good.
You keep rockin' lady...

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 3/29/2006 3:46:04 PM |
awwwww, thank you kindly, dented
I think my next addition needs to the weight loss process is some "traditional" exercise... sit-ups or something since, up till now, I've just changed what I've been eating and drinking and I've been doing some walking as well as going out and dancing 2x a month.
I really hate sit-ups but it's the only thing that springs to mind re: targeting my tummy.
What did you do? | |
|
| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 3/29/2006 4:01:59 PM | I used to work out religiously for years, became a certified trainer etc but when that came to an end and i kept eating, my weight went way up.however, i'm down 65 pounds since last june, i did have to join a weightloss program for it. Not cheap but it worked. back at gym again.
sits ups, crunches etc will target the muscle groups in your tummy cage, but areobic exercise will burn the fat off.
