| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/5/2006 3:45:11 AM | howdy do. Within the past year, I've been able to shed off 72 pounds of pure fat. I invested in the Tony Little Gazelle Freestyle last year and used it about 2 hours a day, everyday (you can get it at Wal-Mart for $198 i believe). That was my cardio workout. My workout now consists of freeweights and pushups every other day, but I'm joining a gym fairly soon to start building up.
There really is no secret to success. Everyone's different. You have to find out what's causing your weight gain and isolate the problem and start to develop a solution. Once you do that, you'll start to see results after about 3 weeks.
Good luck to everyone. | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/5/2006 10:29:55 AM | I find that "Curves" works well for me ... I bought the book at Chapters (approx $20) and the stretchy bands at Walmart (approx $15) ...
The book has two different diets ... calorie reduced or carb reduced ... you just take the quiz to figure out which one will work for you ... it gives you daily menus for 6 weeks, weekly shopping lists ... its great ... you end up eating six times a day ... I thought "how the heck am I gonna lose any weight eating all this food?" ... but I did ... 6lbs the first week ... I couldn't believe it ...
The book also gives you your daily exercises using the stretchy bands ... it takes 30 mins a day ...
When you have reached your "goal" weight, it teaches you how to maintain that weight ...
Good Luck to everyone !!!! ... and Kudos to those that have lost already !!!!!!!!!!

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/5/2006 8:25:58 PM | Good for you Kai....
My story is similar...lots of stress, years of bad food and I guess...eating my feelings. I am down 70 lbs so far and continuing to make good progress. You could even say I am even down 240 lbs if you count shedding my Ex!
I made the lifestyle change and now better eating habits and regular exersise is a part of me! No fad diet, just good food and exersise and patience to let that work. The feel good about yourself factor kicks in pretty early so you get some benefit right away!

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/5/2006 8:47:27 PM | Hi folks, new to pof and just checking out the forum. Myself, I've gone from 182 to 137, my goal is 132 but I seem to be stuck, that happens every few months and then I bust through.
How did I put it on? Stress, eating crap, drinking too much beer (2 every day after work doesn't sound like a lot, but laying on the couch with a bag of chips, it is), and eating too large portions.
How'd I take it off? Power walking 2.5 miles on the treadmill (35 minutes) 4 or 5 times a week, eating smaller portions, drinking less beer and more water, and being active (hiking etc.), and eating marginally healthier (no chips except a bit at parties, but basically eating real food, no special diets and no Mickey D).
Why'd I do it? I sensed my wife was drifting away and I thought this might help rekindle her feelings. Didn't work, or I wouldn't be here, right? But I'm healthy! It became a habit, not work. I used to hate the idea of going to a gym, now I get aggravated if I miss a day!
You can do it folks - don't get discouraged at the outset. For me, I had to build up aerobic capapcity slowly and the gains were small for several months, then the pounds started evaporating, I mean 2 to 3 pounds a week. Just don't get disocuraged with slow initail progress, stick with it.
So, how'd I do here, are you inspired, or just plain tired?

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/6/2006 11:47:32 AM | I found it inspirational, howsitgoing, like you said it's small changes that make the big difference, for me too, I am just starting out, have lost 10 lbs so far, and am looking forward to many more being lost. I am not doing anymore fad diets either, I find them too depressing when they dont work, and your doing all the hard work, or the dieting without any results, so now i am on a healthy eating lifestyle (not a diet) It can be done, just gotta learn to stick with it, and if you mess up, oh well, get back on track as soon as you can, you will feel so much better for sticking to it in the long run. I always remember, it took me 40 yrs to look like this, so it isnt gonna take me overnite to get rid of it. Chin up everyone, it can be done | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/6/2006 11:50:10 AM | | Sorry I forgot to mention that I read Dr Phil's book also, very good book to read, makes you do some soul searching and find out what your triggers are for overeating. Very inspirational also | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/6/2006 12:03:01 PM | | I thought about an elliptical, but I've heard that they don't promote a natural motion for your body and doesn't really get you working your body effectively. Apparently a long walk is more effective?!?!? | |
|
| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/6/2006 1:24:58 PM | you have to get a good one, with a long stride, so it is just like walking without the impact.
I have one thats almost perfect.. the stride is a bit short for my liking.. but dammmmmm do the thighs ever burn after!
I love it! | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/6/2006 1:41:51 PM | There is a book on the market called Fit For Life. It is not a 'weight loss' program but instead allows to to make long standing life style changes. You do end up losing weight, and at the same time detoxify and get healthy. | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/6/2006 1:48:50 PM | Spanks, I luv ya babe, no matter what weight you are. I haven't posted to a forum in a veerrry long time so I thought "why not here?"
Any of you who met me last year met a friendly laughable kind man of about 210-215 lbs.
Now that I'm back, I'm still the same only around 180 lbs. . I didn't do much to lose the weight, just watched the really bad foods (if it sees the inside of a deep fryer, it's not good for you!)...who knew???
The biggest part in my weight loss however was happiness. I found comfort in something (someone actually) rather than food. Food has been my friend, my confidente, my security blanket if you will, for most of my life.
Now that my replacement for food is gone, I have made a choice to continue with happiness as a comfort wherever I may find it.
The basis for my positive eating habits can be attributed to "The South Beach Diet" by Dr. Augustine (I think that is who wrote it). If you only skim the first few pages you will do yourself a disjustice, as it will seem very much like the "scary Atkins Diet". In short cut out carbs of any sort for only the first 2 weeks (and NO! YOU CANNOT EAT 8 POUNDS OF MEAT AND CHEESE A DAY). I won't go on in detail, check their website.
If I were to actually excercise and be more true to the "diet" I'd likely hit 150 before the end of this year.
Spanky? We need to get the photo at Bobby C's so I can post it with the one from last year.
I'm feeling better, I like to think I'm looking better, and maybe after meeting some of the new fishies who have joined since I left, I'll be feeling better.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/6/2006 3:54:14 PM | Anyone who has lost weight and kept it off, congratulations. 90% of those who have lost weight, gain it all back and then add more, according to most statistics. I think the buddy system works well, if two people are both trying to lose weight and they can be there for one another when the urges strike. I have had weight issues for much of my earlier life, topping off at almost 200 pounds by age 12. I was the fattest kid in my public school, and if I had not caught myself in the summer of 1967 and lost 25 pounds, and had the incentive never to be as fat again, Lord knows where I would have been today. Dieting is not about eating tofu, fat free, or really changing your eating habits terribly radically. It is about moderation and not giving in to temptation. It is not easy, believe me, and will power of won't power (as in won't eat) have to play a crucial part. The rewards are many, more confidence, better health, longer life and much more. Don't ever give up and if anyone wants to write me, I may not be an expert, but I will sure be a shoulder for anyone who needs support in their battles and I will do anything I can to give reassurance. | |

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/7/2006 6:08:14 AM | Thanx Mae... my neighbour has one and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the burn in my thighs. It let's me know that I am doing something right!!! I'm short so I'm not too sure if a long stride makes much of a difference... I'll look into that though for sure!!
I recently read a book and I highly recommend it. The title is "Eat, Drink and Lose Weight." Although it promotes incorporating more veggies and grains into ones diet it also breaks down and explains good carbs versus bad carbs, how proteins work, how soy products do increase your blood sugar thus raising your insulin level.. oh and for anyone who is confused (like me) about the different types of fats (saturated, unsaturated, polysaturated)... it breaks down and explains them too.
I know it sounds like a lot to take in and that it might have a bunch of boring facts and figures along with it being written like a graduates thesis... NOPE.. it's in layman's terms and very easy to understand.
To lose weight.. you must CONSUME LESS calories than you burn.
Here'e something for all of you...
"If we've learned to trim the fat from our diets, why, during that same period has the obesity rate nearly doubled? And why hasn't the war on fat led to a plummeting of heart disease rates in recent years? Part of the reason is that we've cut ALL fats without regard to the benefits of unsaturated fats which can improve levels of cholesterol and other fat particles in the blood, strengthen the heart against dangerous erratic heartbeats, and fight the gradual clogging of the arteries. But aren't these 'good' unsaturated fats still fattening? Not necessarily. It may surprise you to learn that it's not the fat -saturated or unsaturated- in your diet that makes you fat. And contrary to popular assumptions you can't control your weight just by limiting "fat calories". The bottom line is, a calorie is a calorie. Eat more calories than you burn - any kind of calories whether they're from fat, carbohydrates, or protein- and you'll gain weight. So, if you keep your total caloric intake and your activity level constant and shift the ratio of the kinds of fat you eat to include more unsaturated fats and less saturated ones, you won't gain weight. Add to this a small reduction in carbohydrates, and you'll lose weight." (pg. 35)
Blah.... read the book.... I'm not gonna preach to you.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/7/2006 7:18:47 AM | Seriously if you can afford it and can make sure to open a few solid hours each week the best thing to do is get a gym membership and a trainer. The trainer can work out a program for you, specifically to help you meet your goals and they will help push you to accomplish them. If you can stay in a routine with a trainer for a few months you will have much better success if you go off on your own later. Not only will you know more about exercising and what you need to reach your goals, you'll also be more motivated because you will see results after those two months and want to get even further. Beyond that you'll be in a routine and it will be easier for you to keep at it. Any good gym that is of decent size will have someone who can give you a nutritional consultation. They will help you make a diet right for you. If they are good and your clear with them about what your looking for and what you eat they should work with food you will enjoy eating and help you come out with a diet easier for you to stick to.
Away from that, cardio is always good to help shed the pounds, if you can manage to make the time have 5 small deals a day. Basically eat every 3 hours, less of a portion then you normally eat. Weight training is also good, for male or female...though I recommend having 8 sessions with a professional trainer if you want to get into doing weights. They will teach you to be way more efficient and show you not how to hurt yourself, also whats best for your goals.

What you should be looking for is a machine that feels comfy when you're on it.. the motion should not feel un natural. Best example i can give is the clown peddling on the teeny tiny bike... looks weird feels weirder. If you're short.. maybe one of those cheap Orbitrek ones wouldn't be so bad.. I can't use them.. cause it looks like a fat clown on a teeny tiny bike

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/9/2006 2:45:44 PM | I too have battled my weight. As soon as I have to start buying the bbw sizes I start to cringe. This past year my Doctor told me I have to lose weight, my cholesteral is to high, I suffer from acid reflux and I am not metabolizing my surgar well. Thankfully not diabetic, but if I gained anymore weight, I could become diabetic. At 5"4' I have never been over 225 lbs, which is big, but I have always been well- perportioned.
So in the last 6 months I have begun a walking regimen (3 to 4 miles at day), eating healthier and have lost 30 lbs. My cholestor is now low and my medication has been lowered, I may even be able to stop taking it after my next check up. Almost never have to take meds for acid reflux anymore and surgar back to normal. My weight occasionally plateaus and have to ramp up the walks and change up my food intake, more protien and good carbs. Then I usually get back on track. My downfall is the weekends because I am more active during the week (daycare teacher, always on the move) and I live by myself in a condo with little to do. Do I want to become a size 6, not on your life! Never have been never will be. I just want to be healthy. My goal is to keep up what I am doing, and as long as my health is fine to heck what the Doctor says about my supposed "recommened weight". I strive for healthy, wealthy and wise. I have two out of three, anyone know how I can get the wealthy one. lol
Good luck to all the other Fishies, and thanks for the post Spanky, we all need to know we are not alone in this effort.

| weight loss Posted: 7/10/2006 2:27:46 PM | | My problem is working the night shift for the past 4 yrs. I gained 25 lbs very fast It took awhile for me to get adjusted to when to eat and sleep. When I got home everyone is having breakfast but Im having supper. Went to a gym and started to lose a few lbs. Doc told me I was putting on more but when I weighed in I was same weight as last year.215lbs. But like all good things there is a bad side. Gym went bankrupt with my $300. membership and now Im trying to do it in my basement. But it is difficult to lift weights and not make noise and wake the family. I tried doing it after I wake in the afternoon but no energy. I was more productive in the early am. I was diagnoised with a hypo thyroid. so it is a slower metabolism. and the Doc told me I was destined to gain wieght. I hate having my picture taken and that was the starting factor to get me motivated when I saw my pic and even I said boy you look fat. I tried Hydroxycut and lost money. Kia25 does the slim in 6 really work? I have seen that infomercial all night long. | |

| weight loss Posted: 7/10/2006 3:22:20 PM | I'm down 40 pounds since last Thanksgiving (I decided to start dieting the day after).
I lost the first 30 on weight watchers, but then quit the diet and put 10 back on.
About a month ago, I started walking at least half an hour a week, and swimming at least once a week. While I decided to eat whatever I wanted (like ice cream, pizza, whatever), but not eating after 8:00 pm.
In that time, I've lost the 10 I put back on, and another 5.
I think this is a diet I can stick to.

| Weight Loss...I'm Confiding in my Fellow Fishies Posted: 7/14/2006 9:23:42 PM | Gidget, I saw your posting. This is the first posting I have ever done and will probably be the last. I am posting to help you and others with some information regarding losing weight.
Next time when you are grocery shopping, look at the ingredients of everything processed you buy. The dirtiest secret regarding the obesity epidemic is a processed starch called "High Fructose Corn Syrup." Its not a natural sugar, its an artificially processed one. However, the worst thing about it is that it kills a brain chemical that tells you you are full. If you consume foods with this, you will eat more because it kills the natural chemical telling you that you are full. Exercise and healthy eating are important, but if you consume products with HFCS, you will not lose weight. Unfortunately, HFCS is now in everything, from milk, fruit juices, soda, mayonaise and most other processed foods. I found this out by accident. For more information, get the book "The Owner's Manual," written by 2 doctors.
Also, caffeine causes your body to absorb about 26% more carbohydrates. If you knock off the HFCS, eliminate caffeine, and get moderate amounts of exercise, you will watch the weight melt off. I know.
Good luck. | |
