I just don't like it when I hickup, and suddenly there is a comercial with medication for it.
Drugs... the cure for the common life.

Medication is a good thing to start off on, it helps keep you under better control of your emotions....and then you start seeing a counselor/doctor who will help you identify the problem and learn how to adjust or get rid of the problem....while slowly getting off the medication.

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/11/2006 3:54:49 AM | I am not sure what I can offer, except to relay what I have experienced and what works for me.
I have hormonal imbalances, and understand it that hormones govern our behavior. So I work on that with a chinese herb called Dong Quai, and sometimes Progesterone Cream, as I am estrogen dominant (as most women of child bearing ages are). Can we spell PMS?
I also have chemical imbalances in the brain, and use 5 HTP (L-Tryptophan) to address depression during the day, sometimes taking Melatonin at night to lengthen my sleep cycles (how many of us are monsters without enough sleep?), and I also take Flax Seed Oil daily to address the imbalance. The Flax Seed Oil has been shown in clinical studies to benefit ADD and ADHD, as well as manic depression (bi polar).
I am not ashamed to seek out therapy when needed. Sometimes another human being to talk to (unbiased professional therapist) can make all the difference in helping a person to rise above self esteem issues and see a clearer reality. I also listen to self help CD's, soothing mood music, guided imagery CD's, and at times just watch a good comedy movie to LAUGH MY BUTT OFF (oh that rush of endorphins to make everything right as rain for a while).
I'm not an overly religious person, and prefer the "spiritual" label. I do on occasion read my Bible and pray....but I don't even pray traditionally. I just talk to God as if He is another person in the room, sometimes with anger, but most times with humor. He DOES have a sense of humor. Get out and walk the Earth and observe the beauty of it.....breathing fresh air, thinking, and clearing the mind of those cobwebs. The intake of oxygen and the boost of your circulatory system (blood flow), often improves mood as well (those endorphins again). And once last thing before I go....SMILE.....it is contagious.....HUG.......it makes us thrive.....and LOVE....for without it, why are we here?

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/16/2006 3:54:30 AM | 1. I don't care if it's a disease or a theory ~ I have it.
2. I don't care if the drug companies are making millions off the drugs I take ~ they work so enjoy your yachts and all the other perks CEO's ~ it works for me.
3. I don't care if others think that it's all in my head ~ it is all in my head, just not in the way you think.
4. I don't care if people think I'm weak ~ you try dealing with depression and see how much work it is to get out of ~ not for the weak or the faint of heart.
5. I don't care if there are studies after studies that purport to undermine the validity of depression and other psychiatric disorders ~ to those of us who deal with it these reports are nothing but liners for birdcages.
6. I don't care if weight training, exercising or a vitamin supplement works for some ~ it didn't for me and everyone's experience and thus recovery is different. Exercise is all well and good when you are able to get out of bed.
I do care however when people don't seek treatment because of the various misconceptions about depression. I care very much about that. To quote a commercial, depression hurts ~ but it doesn't have to.

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/16/2006 5:46:28 PM | | So I've been dealing with depression for 5 years I've tried medication one on one therepy i've been drugged up so much I couldn't feel anything and all i ever wanted to do was sleep cuz the meds were so exhausting A few months ago I stopped taking my meds and decided that i would try dealing with things on my own it helped alot though regaining emotions was hard since suddenly i remembered that i could actually feel I was placed in the hospital about 2 months ago due to a change in my depression and i was placed in an out patient therepy program which actually seems to work really well i'm still off my med against all advice from nurses doctors and everyone around me but doing group psychotherepy in this course learning about coping skills and recongnizing syptoms was effective in my stablity for the time being. I am a big believer that all these meds they place people on are just to numb out the pain not to fix the problems at hand talking to others going through the same or simular situations and getting feed back from others is highly affective and i recommend it to anyone dealing with depression | |

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/17/2006 2:50:27 AM | I agree with Spelly too.
You're far less judgemental when you've been through it. Depression hurts, suicide hurts. Suicide can never be undone. Meds don't cure, but they sure help.

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/17/2006 5:12:04 AM | Stax has a point too though. Talk therapy is effective for many people. It is best to have more than one modality for dealing with these very difficult problems. Some people use a combination of meds and talk therapy. Until we get a better grasp on mental health, it's probably best not to pooh-pooh what we do have that has worked for so many albeit with side effects. | |

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/17/2006 1:25:40 PM | Ya, I hate being on meds and i totally plan on getting off someday. But that day is not today. Hahaha. At the end of the day, I'd rather be functioning and alive. :-)
And yes, meds are meant to be a tool in combo with other things (therapy), meds are never a cure-all.

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/18/2006 4:36:35 PM | "When it comes to clinical depression, the biggest myth of all is that depression is a disease that you can't do anything about and, therefore, you need prescription drugs to "rebalance your brain chemistry." It's one of the greatest hoaxes of modern medicine, and it's generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues for drug companies. "
Medications have their place when treating symptoms of major depression........... I should know..I have used them for 5 years now and am able to fuction.

Thats why talk therpy is usually partnered with medication...................

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/24/2006 4:33:28 PM | Several years ago I was severely depressed, but meds made me worse, I think. Prozac made me have bad thoughts, I thought a lot about suicide, so I had the presence of mind to flushed them....then I was put on several other meds...but I had no facial expression, and I was like a zombe. I couldn't empathize with anyone, and I had no feelings.
The truth of the matter is I was depressed because of my life I was living. I was in a marriage where my husband didn't love me because I had gained so much weight...I got up to about 400 pounds at that time.
I lost 140 pounds and my self esteem was much better. I have since gained 40 of those pounds back, but and my doc thought I was depressed. I took the medicine for a while, and it made me more hungry than what I already was...and it kept me from being able to feel enough to write. Since, I am a writer of poetry, I need to be in touch with my feelings to be creative.
I am no longer depressed. Do I have a down day every now and again...sure who doesn't...but I am not depressed. I believe you are what you think you are...and I am making a decision to be positive.
For me, I have been spending time every day lately reading my bible and it seems to be all the medicine I need. That may not be the answer for everyone, but for me it is all I need. And sometimes I need a swift kick in the behind..so to speak...and have a friend be honest and tell me what I need to hear, instead of saying what they think I want to hear.

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/25/2006 4:06:41 PM | I have suffered from depression since my teens, but I didn't start taking Zoloft till 2001. I never wanted to take the meds cuz I figured I could fight it off and it seems cliche. Since I've been taking meds, it has helped. I go out more and do things and I am more social. All I wanted to do before was just stay home, watch tv, go to bingo... not much. Pretty much stay inside and be alone. | |

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/25/2006 6:48:17 PM | HELLO!!! taking meds IS dealing positively with depression!!!
i've suffered several severe depressions in my life where i couldn't barely get out of bed. [since i was 19.]
the last time it happened when someone i loved very much died, and i got sad, [understatement] and instead of getting over it in time, i got worse and worse. i didn't want to speak to people, my rewarding creative career was becoming extremely difficult, and my easy-going personality changed drastically. [not to mention the physical pain in my chest and throat felt like someone was sitting on me, choking me.]
one morning i thought i was having a stroke - chest pains, couldn't walk straight, couldm't breathe properly, and ended up in ER - where i was referred to a psych. THANK GOD!!!
i have become a poster child for Wellbutrin and will remain on it indefinitely, as i have had over 4 severe bouts in my life. i love these people who have never been depressed, but think u should just 'pull up yr boot straps' and get over it, stiff upper lip and all that. Tom Cruise is just an actor, people, why would anyone listen to him? Our culture has made 'gods' out of celebrities!!!! See a doctor if u r depressed, try to exercise, try to stay connected to work and friends and family, even tho u may want to isolate yrself.
Once i felt a little better, i was able to resume working out [weight training and aerobics], return to work and get active again. and all that helped me heal even more. but i definitely needed the meds and talk therapy. cognitive therapy also helped. but the meds kick-started me into functioning in the world again.
remember that often the consequence of untreated depression is suicide.
IF U NEED HELP, SEEK IT. PUT YRSELF FIRST FOR A CHANGE...WHO CARES WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK OR SAY? i've been there, i understand...meds worked for me thank God I have a happy life now. did u notice my name is 'bliss me out'?
ps. if one type of med doesn't work for you, tell your doc u want to try a different one. u may have to try a few different ones before u find the one that works the best for you. find the courage to get help and don't listen to people who want u to feel bad for not doing it 'naturally'....it's just another way of putting stigma on us...people take meds for pain, and depression is an unspeakable pain. don't be ashamed of needing help. there's nothing to be ashamed of... u can call me...'bliss me out' !!!!!

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/26/2006 1:08:57 PM | scottish thistle you really hacked me off
you have no idea what analytical therapies can do for people with emotional problems.
have you spent the last 15 years reading psychology, psychoanalysis, hypnosis?
have you taken people thro analysis using hypnosis?
do you read books at all?
do you understand that the vast majority of sufferers can cure themselves of their problems in less than 10 sessions using this therapy?
you have a weird religion, composed of simple statements:
1. got a thirst ? drink something! 2. got emotional problems? ask a psychiatrist to brutally suppress your emotional life with powerful drugs - for decades!
have i cured people of depression? or anxiety? or phobias?
yes i have.
the next time you are about to tell somebody they are talking nonsense on subjects of which you have NO KNOWLEDGE WHATSOEVER , why don't you try pretending you're a kind , lntelligent , fully grown man instead ?
so you respond with fear when i talk of analysis? it's a shame you'll never cure those fears - by visiting....an analyst? perhaps you deserve to suffer?
feel better now.... g | |

| Dealing with Depression positively? Posted: 11/26/2006 5:45:59 PM | Best thing to deal with depression is to keep busy. Surround yourself with tasks and hobbies so your not sitting around bored and alone(this is where majority of ppl develop depression).
If need be, an herb called: st. johns wort works great for depression(assuming your not taking any medication for it to begin with).
Hope this helps. | |
