You really think that because you went to one website and found that it stated geeks as 'queer' that proves your point? If you think that everything you read on the net is real and fact just because it has a WWW before it...... well enough said I think without spelling it out!
I can likewise only speak from my experience of guys who have been classed as 'geeks' and your earlier description was IMO far from my experience of said 'geeks'.
Gay? Queer? No!
Frustrated? Lacking confidence with woman? Yes, sometimes.

| Geeks or Chavs? Posted: 8/16/2008 4:40:42 PM | My friend just said I am a geek I laugh at UNIX jokes, listen to heavy metal, wear thinkgeek t-shirts spend my time working and socialising on a computer and my favorite school subjects were maths and science and (plus I am adding! )I have weird geek friends

| Geeks or Chavs? Posted: 8/16/2008 9:07:37 PM | Geek. Chav's should be sterilised, money for the operations coming from the savings in various benefits.
Chav or charva is just the everyday term for the underclass.

| Geeks or Chavs? Posted: 8/17/2008 2:12:44 AM | Alma sorry but you really are taking utter bollocks. I am a geek and proud of it, but would I be drawn to homosexuality...hell no! Yes I do like interacting with other geeks, but thats cause at least they have something to talk about that you find interesting, not what the latest thing posh spice and britney are up too which is just BORING! I love to read, I love my computer (I would be lost without it) I play online games (EVE ONLINE FTW !) I write, and I love watching sci-fi, (This all makes me a super geek) but you know what before my injury I also liked the following....going out on huge long walks, going out with my mates down the pub and having a blast....which I take it are entirelly un-geeky. Now I have moved back to my home town I must admit I do get out less, but thats cause of a number of reasons...the pubs here are crap and I can't get out much these days. So what am I, some sort of hybrid geek?

EDIT
We are all geeks on here, why do you think we are interacting with each other on the internet!

When did I say geeks are gay? And what is wrong with being a gay? I have several gay friends and they are nothing different to heterosexual people in terms of their personality.None of them is geek. I even have two friends who went through the sex change process. They are not geeks ;)
Not everyone who works with computers I would call a geek. Some of them are real experts but they are not geek.
But several are geek. It is quite easy to distinguish a geek from a non geek in the computer world.. They would 'stick out' with strange things they talk about or have interests in while the same time in terms of computer terminology they would just be like a little encyclopedia and like to show off with this. A geek for example would get enthusiastic about taking photos of flowers in his local park and displaying it to his geek friends and they would all say 'wow.. what a nice flower' ..and he would do this day after day, so much that you would think 'isn't this flower story a little bit over the top?' And the next month his interest would go into cooking... so he would get enthusiastic about his cooking skills and then display the photos of all the meals he has created.. or for example a geek would have a little bunch of colored papers in his pocket, folded the strange way with little notes on them, this would be his days 'to do' priorities..or he would say 'thats not a wolf, that is a hyena' when you talk about something and would make fun of you for mixing these two up.. and so on...
Someone said it is easy to change a geek..
If we are talking about a real geek I think this is close to impossible
They are very opinionated people, very often stubbornly holding the extreme end in which they have a little life experience and know only by reading about it..

| Geeks or Chavs? Posted: 8/17/2008 3:30:05 AM | I think this thread just shows how wrong it is to label people as people are different and as much as it would be easier to package people you can't do that.
I have two questions now, what is a geek? what is a chav? Because I think people would have different answers to the questions. Is a chav decided by their social class and if they are, are we really that snobby to dismiss them. Is a chav decided by clothing or speech, again are we that prejudgemental? Does type of job or lack of one or level of education makes you a chav? The only examples of chavdom given are Jordan and jade goody.
Jordan - happily married, good mother, works hard, succesful and intelligent. Is Jordan a chav? She can string a sentence together and as far as I am aware has only been in trouble over driving and is dedicated to equestrian to such an extent there is rumours she may be good enough for the olympics.
Jade Goody - a not very bright girl, born into a family with a bisexual mother who is to drugs and not given the best of starts in life, became a national joke - but with hard work has become a bot of national icon. Again a good mother, succesfull and essentially a good person who is just a bit thick.
Alamas definition of a geek is completely different (I perosnally find hers very ill informed and slightly warped)to my own and would follow Valens view and I guess I am calling Valen geek. I know quite a few people who I would call a geek like Valen and though I can't speak for valen they are intelligent, friendly and good fun, its just I have nothing in common in their hobbies as they have no interest in mine so we concentrate on what we do have in common.

| Geeks or Chavs? Posted: 8/17/2008 3:33:35 AM | I would much prefer to go out with a Greek than a Chav.....
We could spend the evening smashing plates in a restaurant and getting drunk or pass the night away standing outside the local shop trying to look hard, its no contest....

I have two questions now, what is a geek? what is a chav? Ooh, very good questions! To me a Chav is someone who chooses to exclude themselves from decent society by being violent, destructive, abusive, or even just lazy (those that game the benefits system and have no intention of working despite having nothing preventing them from doing so). Now I know this is a fairly broad deffinition, and I honestly believe people can belong to this group temporarly. I don't believe a Chav is a Chav for life unless they choose to be. To me a geek is someone who is overly interested in computers, and takes time to learn about them. I would consider myself a geek. Now to me "chav" is an insult, but to a chav "geek" is an insult. Both terms are used in a derogatory manner. Amongst the people I talk to regularly "geek" is seen as a compliment, but then the people I talk to regularly all fit into what I consider to be a geek. We all aspire to know more about computers, and spend time learning about them. Perhaps Chavs see the term "chav" as a compliment, perhaps they aspire to fit into that category.
The only examples of chavdom given are Jordan and jade goody. I wouldn't consider either of them chavs, although they do both wear clothes that are seen as fitting a chav stereo-type, but I think that has more to do with fashion trends than them being chavs.

| Geeks or Chavs? Posted: 8/18/2008 3:23:04 PM | I want to be able to talk about something other than hair, reality TV and fashion....so Geek- everytime. But he'd have to look like a sporty dude, heavy metal dude or 'alternative' dude....not Clark Kent. | |
|
| Geeks or Chavs? Posted: 8/21/2008 2:54:05 AM | | Oh yes, geek every time. At least geeks are intelligent. Jade Goody and Jordan (to use an earlier posted example) are my least ideal type of woman and sum up chav to me. | |

To me the term chav is not snobbish because a chav is defined by the way they act, not anything which is not their fault eg their upbringing.
It annoys me when people take "chav" to be a derogatory term for what used to be the "working class"
I wouldn't say Jordan is a chav.

I have to admit I have been accused of being a geek a few times in my life... but my question to you all is, if given a choice of the two ... who would you rather be date or have a relationsip with .
Erm..
I wouldn't say Jordan is a chav.
No i dont think she is a chav, i think she is a slag. A fookin p*ssing slag.

| Geeks or Chavs? Posted: 8/21/2008 7:34:05 AM | It's gotta be a Geek every time... At least i could cope with a geek conversation, not sure i could talk (or even understand) a chav for that long | |
