I work out at home -- the equipment is available whenever I want to use it and I don't have to share the locker room with the crowd who think baby powder and mascara are absolute necessities of life.

I train 4-5 days a week, 1-3 bodyparts a day. I do cariod 3 x a week seperatly. Stve, I think you should get a partner to motiviate you. I find unless you're very self motivated and or/very knowledgeable, it can be tough to figure out how to change your routine. I personal train part time..and have been working out for 16 years. Don't forget to warm up before lifting and eat small frequent meals!

Hmm ... saying you do personal training and also suggesting I get someone to train with in the same post ... I think I can read between the liens

Just kidding Yan ... I think I might switch to a new gym ... maybe go right after work ... I hear the Park Lane gym is pretty fancy

Oh, as for the working out at home on your own ... awesome if it works for you, but I prefer to go to a gym ... I find having others working out around you motivates me to to heavier weights

I think that may be a male vs female difference.
Man sees another man lifting heavier weights -- he wants to lift heavier weights too.
Woman sees another woman lifting more weight/looking better at the gym -- she wants to drop weights on that other woman's head.... Or is that just me?

I actually get my motivation to work out harder from seeing the results, feeling the looser fit of my clothes, being able to do more, lift more, see more tone in my body & buy nicer clothes.

I don't think you are alone in that philosophy, Xavi.

Men are from Mars. Women are from Venus.

I am finally reading the book. Hopefully I will
gain a better understanding of the different ways
men and women think. I can certainly relate
to what I've read so far.

I used to work out in my home gym. It was sooo
convenient. But now I go to a gym and sweat
with the general public. It would be nice to have a
workout 'buddy'. Wouldn't be so boring.

I go to the gym 3-5 times a week. Sometimes its great to go by yourself but when you do go with a group I do find it a whole lot more motivating. Especially if you commit to going then all your friends are on your ass if you don't so even if your dying you go just so you don't have to listen to them.

My biggest hint...make sure you weight train. Turn the fat into muscle cause then your all set. When you muscular you burn calories quicker. And eat lots of protein...it helps with the pain if you a everyday gym goer! If you have been going a year and 3 months your on the right track bud!

Cheers steve,

Mel

Xavi, that was hilarious.

Back in my bodybuilding days, many, many, many moons ago, I went to the gym 6-7 days a week. Now I just lift weights at home. Would like to join a gym but finding the time is an issue. Going before work would be great but I struggle to get up that early in the morning. Also, it would be better if there was a training buddy. This way you motivate each other when one doesn't feel like working out.

....oooppps, time to do chest and back.

I'm a regular gym nut as well. I make it 4 to 5 times a week. I love it now. I have a trainer though it's expensive but I think it's work it for me. I'm at Scotia Square Nubody's regularly so if anyone goes there or wants to try it out I can always use a partner to go with. I recommend Spin class as well. Ladies I have read in SHAPE Magazine that it's an excellent way to tone the butt. Just a hint in case there are other ladies out there who want to know what they can do for that. I go on Wednesdays. Steve if you ever want a partner on the eliptical I can show you a few hints that I learned. It kinda scared me at first too. The EFX Machine is also a good cardio workout.

I just joined LA Weightloss so I couldn't afford a gym membership now if I wanted to. I am so glad for the nice weather so I can go for walks. I'm starting slowly, but it is very hilly around here so I feel I am getting a good workout <- jumping jacks

I am utterly and completely terrified of the eliptical machine ... I cring in fear as I pass by it when I'm at the gym ... and you would know, they put the treadmills behind the elipticals so while I am jogging I have to stare at the freaking machines!

Hmm ... I'm in a gym mood ... maybe I'll put in an appearence today ... somebody alert the media!!!

I was already there today. Don't let the elipical machines scare you. Go and get a good work out. Let the endorphines loose. You could always join me for a spin class if your up to it. Wednesday nights for friday's at noon.

I do a small workout every second day... and I'm on a diet of sorts too... but I've been the same damn weight and size for the last 10 yrs... ugghh!

Oh yeah... back on to topic! I have a cheap eliptical here at home! I do some pilates, matt exercises, strength and toning, tubing, etc.. try to change it around week to week to give my body a change of pace.

Think I'll get lypo next year!! j/k

Jordanne,
A friend of mine just had lypo but I haven't talked to her yet. It is kinda extreme. Do you run or jog? This is one sure way to drop inches. I have noticed this myself. I have a trainer but would be willing to show you some exercises that we do. I'm all for a girl looking her best and feeling good. I've told all my friends that my trainer is for all of us you have to pass on the knowledge. WE do a lot with the ball and free weights.
The best is just to keep exercising. Don't get discouraged.

Hey smiles! Thanks for the input! I do use the ball and free weight as well with my workouts... perhaps its the diet and the drinking on the weekends! LOL!

I'm trying not to get discouraged... and in all honesty, If I had the cash for lypo, I'd go to Europe instead!!

I think the proplem is with me... not trying hard enough!!

Just FYI:

You can burn fat through how, and when, you eat. You really don't need to exercise very much. If you lower your carbohydrates and increase your proteins, and still eat low to moderate fats, your body will burn the fat off for you. The trick is: You should eat 6 moderate meals per day! Not just 3. (I'm not talking about Atkins!! Never did it, never will!)

Eating more often (the right foods, of course) will increase your metabolism and your body will burn the fat you have stored. It looks for carbs first, but since you are limiting your carb intake, it then looks for fat to burn as fuel. It will only use protein (ie: your muscles) as a last resort.

In my own personal situation, I have done it two different ways in the past:
1. working out like crazy and not eating much food. (lost 60 lbs. in 4 months, wasn't happy)
2. Not working out at all (just living life) and eating LOTS of food. (lost 50 lbs. in 5 months, very happy)

I have a couple as friends who are:

Him: a healthy guy in his late 40's who became a natural body-builder and won competitions.
Her: a nutritionist

They have given me a plan to achieve my goals by late July.

I used to go to the sportsplex in dartmouth quit a bit. I totally hated the co-ed steam room thing by the pool. No offence guys, but I don't want to be in a steam room with a big hairy stranger.

I haven't gone in about a year though. I'm going to start cycling as soon as the weather starts cooperating with my schedule.

Co-ed steam room? Seriously?

I can hear it now: "Well, looks like we won't be sued over anything, we better add a co-ed steam room!"

Logan... I was wondering what you'd suggest for recommended daily caloric and fat intake... I eat really well, but I sit most of the day... i totally hate working out, unfortunately... but I eat about 1700 calories a day... people on diets eat much less... I don't think I could go less, and I hate eating salad all day... ughhh!

There are a lot of calclators online that will tell u based on ur height, age and weight what your base metabolic rate is...basically the calories u would burn just by laying in bed all day. From there it's recommended to figure how many calories u burn daily....cut 500 calories from each day, which adds up to 3500 calories a week, which should equal one lb loss

Hey Dimples... yeah... I've looked up alot of those... I used to eat well over 2100 calories a day... I suppose I could try 1500.. but holy moly.. .I get really hungry!! I've been getting better and finding foods that last longer, however... just would love a waist for the summer!!

Maybe I should stop sitting at my puter reading forums and get off my butt!! LOL!

If ur hungry, it means ya need the food, so don't go too nuts! Good weather coming so might be easier to just work in some extra activity...walks, basketball, tennis, swimming...

i got stuck in a plateau recently and realized I was only eating twice a day...so started eating more often, even if it was just grabbing a lil cup of applesauce, just to keep the metabolism going and the calories burning

Just remember the body isnt a machine and those that think a body can be changed by, changing your eating habits are only feeding into a certain disaster.
When the body cries to be fed, feed it.
Now what you do after your done eating, well that can cause alot of ones problems.
Concentrate more on when the body is full and what to do afterwards.
Don't put so much theory into trying to figure out how to starve and get away with it.
Never eat after 8 pm. Bad for the body.
The body is used to thousands of years of a pioneer spirit and the days of when one had to get up early to work to get things done.
Manual labour is passe.
But if ya want to be in shape
Change back to it today.

Jordanne, everybody is different in the way their body metabolizes the food they eat. But, in general, if you want your body to burn off the fat for you, you must do two very important things:

1. Lower your carbohydrate intake and increase your protein. Fat should be low to moderate. (The carbs are the main culprit in your body storing fat. Your body burns fuel in this order: Carbohydrates, fat, protein. If you lower your carb intake, your body naturally goes after the stored fat for fuel. It will only go after your stored protein 'muscle' as a very last resort.)
2. Eat more often. You should try to eat approximately 6 small meals per day instead of 3 large meals. Less time between meals is very important for maintaining a higher metabolism.

You still need carbohydrates, so don't completely cut them out. However, eat your carbs early in the day rather than at dinner time, or later. Breakfast is the best time to have your carbs. (ie: cereal, toast, etc....)

Try to stay away from potatoes. They are not much more than starch-filled carb blobs. Switch to Sweet potatoes (yams). They are much better for you.

You still should have moderate exercise once in a while. If you have a bit more muscle mass, your body will have a naturally higher metabolism.

Here is an example of what I ate in one day this week.
Breakfast: Cereal (Kashi Go Lean) High Protein, High Fibre cereal
Mid-Morning: Mixed Greens salad with tomato and bacon bits. Light Italian Dressing. Also, lean turkey slices for the protein.
Lunch: Filet Mignon
Mid Afternoon: Apple
Dinner: Aevalise's salmon recipe with steamed broccoli and Yams.
Evening: Chicken Wrap

That was a lot of food! I was full all of the time. The next day, I jumped on the scales because I was positive I had eaten way too much. I was 1lb. lighter!

The trick to burning fat is to keep your metabolism high. You do this by eating food. Never go 5 hours without eating something (except when you are asleep). The "Not eating after 8pm" may be valid, but I find I sleep better when I don't have the 'growlies'.

Please note: I am not a trained nutritionist! I am just relaying what my nutritionist has told me to do, to burn fat and build muscle! (I am going to the gym 3-4 times per week because I also want to increase muscle mass.)

Sorry for the long post!
