When malignant melanoma is detected in its earliest stages, surgical removal cures the cancer in most cases. If the disease spreads survival at 5 years after the diagnosis is only about 30% to 40%. There are a number of factors that increase the risk of melanoma -- a family history, prominent or unusual moles; overexposure to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight is believed to contribute to melanoma in some cases.

Thanks for reading it, Fox.

I am not trying to sound preachy, just want people to know the risk they are taking to have brown skin.

Tanning is bad....indoors or outdoors. If you suffer from SAD, try a full spectra light bulb or sun light lamp. If you like that bronzed look then try the tanning creams. Good luck!

Tanning Tips

Some people associate a suntan with good health and vitality. It is a known fact that sunlight assists the body in manufacturing Vitamin D, but a little sunlight goes a long way and tanning, indoor or out, can destroy any benefit the sun has to offer.

Despite medical warnings, some people believe that getting an indoor tan is safe and rely on tanning salons to help them get through the long, dark, cold days of winter. In fact, tanning salons are still very popular in many major cities across Canada and will offer package deals for their private rooms, tanning beds or upright booths.

There is scientific evidence supporting the harmfulness of UV rays, in any form including indoor tanning beds and sun-lamps, as well as over-exposure to the sun itself.

Basically, ultraviolet light is classified into three categories:

UVA, also known as black light, which causes tanning
UVB, which causes damage in the form of sunburn, and;
UVC, which is filtered out by the atmosphere and never reaches us.
Although it is true that tanning rays are less likely to cause sunburn, it doesn’t’ make indoor tanning safe.

UV radiation from the sun, tanning beds, or sun lamps may cause skin cancer and can cause premature aging and can have a damaging effect on the immune system. The number of skin cancer cases reported each year is on the rise and experts attribute this to the increasing exposure to UV radiation associated with indoor tanning.

People with skin types I, II, and III are at the greatest risk:

I. Pale white skin
Always burns; never tans

II. White
Burns easily; tans minimally

III. White (Average)
Burns moderately; tans gradually to light brown

IV. Beige or lightly tanned
Burns minimally; always tans well to moderately brown

V. Moderate brown or tanned
Rarely burns; tans profusely to dark

VI. Dark brown or black
Never burns; deeply pigmented

If your weary of indoor tanning, you could try getting a tan using tanning cream which involves weekly applications of colour treatment creams and avoids exposure to UV rays entirely. Biotherm and Lancome makes a great one, and so does ban du solei and Neutrogena.

They are a lot cheaper than tanning salons and if applied correctly, can give the illusion of a perfect summer’s tan. You can also get them applied professionally at most spas.

At this time of year any glimpse of the sun is a welcomed sight and it’s hard to imagine anything but an overall feeling of well-being and warmth from a sunny day. But, like anything else that looks, feels or tastes good, too much of a good thing can be bad for your overall health.

Tanning beds are unhealthy....but if you suffer from seasonal affective disorder then you really have to balance the risks of tanning through the dark rainy months, against the very real effects of SAD.

Its a tradeoff, but with this winter breaking records for dreary weather added on to shiftwork, give me the tanning bed any time.

On a similar not I just bought a light therapy lamp which should be safer than the tanning bed.

Well, I used to feel the same way...however, as a sufferer of S.A.D. (Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder) I find that tanning once aweek helps shake off the winter/rainy season blahs.

Just out of curiosity Missy did a Doc tell you that a tanning bed is the way to combat SAD? I'm wondering as you have to wear protective glasses in the booths and I can't see how that can help as with SAD it's all about the light that you see. I've suffered with this all my life and the best help has been the special lights that the Doctors recommend.
The lights in the tanning booths are hot UV lights, not the bulbs that they use to help with SAD.

It's all about the vitamin D

Helps give you energy, especially if you're not able to get much regular daytime exposure.

Well the tannig bed I was gonna use is at my gym- I see some of you suggested tanning before a workout and some after. Can I have reasons???

Well I used to tan at the gym as well (can't no more.... the downfall of pregnancy!)

The best time to tan at the gym is after!

I was told that after a workout, your body is warmed up and it tans easier when it is warm. I found this way to be the most effective for me and my pale little body!

But I have an ex that does it before who says the bed helps him warm up before his workout so he can have a better wo.

I suppose it just depends on your personal preference. Try it a couple of times each way and see what works best for you... it boils down to the fact that it's how it all works with your body.... good luck hun!

I found it best to start at four minutes, five, and I burned. I also turn over half way through which prevents that small area at the sacrum from not being tanned, and I use a sunblock on my tender parts. Having said that, dermatologists are dead set against any kind of tanning, I guess because they have to treat those with sun damaged skin every day.

I would say lotion before and after, workout after cause being HOT HOT sucks and you cant stay in the bed. I would switch from standup to laydown alternating between the 2 everyweek. Stand up... start with 5 minutes, you arent really that fair so you will be fine with that, yes even the pink bits. In the lay down, if its a regular bed you can probably get away with about 8 minutes. Always keep your skin moist, tanning really dries out the skin and can also lead you to premature wrinkles, but who cares you'll be hot like the tropicana babes. Tanning however doesnt mean you have to do it EVERYDAY people... once or twice a week is usually enough, if you wanna get really dark......... GO get it sprayed on, no cancer, lasts for a little while and makes you look great. There are bronzers you can use on your skin, like the jergens bronzer, that will over time make a sutle change in your skin tone. If out in the hot summer sun, please wear sunscreen.... you can tan with it on. Lead by example for your kidos.

Happy Tanning Everyone

P.S I am fair and havent ever gone the max, and I still get a great tan

What ever happened to fair skin being a good thing??
I still find it funny that so many people want to be "darker skinned" yet only want to date caucasians lol
***NO I am not talking about everyone just people in general.***

I see people with cancer everyday at work. Why up your chances when there are SO many alternatives to still getting that "glow".

There is a scene in ..Final Fantasy 3 that will have you all thinking twice about tanning bes!!

O/T I am either ghost white, or burned pink...would tanning beds help a person who does not tan on their own? Or would I just be paying to get burned?

I have heard you start gradually, and that is why I am thinking it may help, as I am tired of being 'Casper'

Well, tanning now and then to perk you up a bit, get the vitamin D and take the pastiness off the skin is cool. All things in moderation, grandma used to say... but....

If you're using one more than once every week or two, it's a little excessive. If you've got a bronze tan in the middle of winter, and haven't been to the tropics, it's quite obvious. You're not fooling anybody. In fact, it looks retarded, and it's a pretty stupid thing to do when you think about it.

I mean, why on earth would you spend way too much money to cause yourself premature wrinkling and skin cancer just to look 'good' for the time being? I'll tell you why... it's because you're a vain, stupid human being. Does your appearance matter all that much? If so, don't you realise you can look good without having a tan.. in fact, I think it looks horrible when people spend too much time in tanning beds. It can make an attractive young woman look like an old cougar, and it can make a hot old cougar look like she's trying WAY too hard to fight the aging process....

It's a bit of a sign of low self image, low self esteem, and an unhealthy need for physical attention.

Whatever, have fun with the skin cancer, wrinkles, and stupid tanning-bed-face.

I'll stick with the pasty white ass for the winter, and I don't feel bad about it whatsoever, thank you!!

edit: If you're in it to help your SAD condition, and to get some vd (oops.. vitamin d that is), then check into full spectrum lights for your home and workplace. Oh, and go outside more often. Slip, slop, slap of course!!

that was my point,... there are so many other options to getting that "GLOW" folks seem to want. Lotions, heck even spray on tans! use the FS lights for those suffering SAD and aren't getting out in the sun enough in the winter. ( yes it DOES even shine through the clouds believe it or not). Just better options than setting yourself up for such an increased chance of cancer is all I was trying to say. Folks will do whatever they like anyhow.

I used the tanning bed at the gym to help me get a basic tan before I went on vacation to Mexico.
I think it was the best way to go. I started off real easy 3/4 minutes to start with, building up to more minutes each visit - and definitely AFTER my work out as the heat could put me to sleep. But when we were in Mexico I used SPF25 and didn't burn - my ex (with no base tan) used SPF35 and burned and peeled like crazy.
Anyone got any stats about how the burn and peel cycle affects the cancer problem?

Why??? Ummmmmmmm why would you want to go to a tanning bed? Ok, so I dont have the knowledge here, but I just dont understand why you would want to look so unnatural? If there is sun.....people are more tanned...if not...they arent. Ok well I will go back to my world now!

Red hair, pale skin...^^^do you like lobster?

There's this woman I see around town once in a while...she's an obvious sun worshipper. She looks like leathered shit. Her blue eyes practically pop out of her over-baked head.

lol that description is so true - I have seen those women and they look twice thier age - I think it is a type of OCD - like people who are addicted to cosmetic surgery - I do use a tanning bed to "feel" better (approx 4 - 6 times/month) and only get a bit of color - I notice that I start to feel down if not getting some "rays" and living in the rain forest and working full time it's tough to find those rays.

So why do these women like to look like leather? Do they having similar denial as anerexia?

heh...at the bar i used to work at, the owners wife was so into fake 'n' bake that he actually bought a tanning bed because it was costing more for her trips there than the bed would work out to in a year.

either way...we all called her "Leatherface". this was the weirdest looking woman you've ever seen. her face looked like a well-worn catchers mitt, bad fake boobs, and obviously fake eyelashes.

freakshow!

and she thought she was something...

something alright!

So wrong...so very, very wrong.
