| Tanning beds Posted: 6/3/2006 4:34:38 PM | LOL funny thread.. Ok now for my brief words of wisdom...Yes any Tan is unhealthy ..and can cause skin cancer...sun or tanning beds. So are smoking, and drinking and all things white... Moderation People and genetics play the most important role in the dangers of tanning. I worked with cancer patients for many years...No tan is the only Safe Tan. Sunburns and Peeling are not moderation ...Bad Bad Bad...growing up in a sunny beach area I've had my share of that..I myself like all the rest of you choose to take my chances n hope It doesn't happen to me!!!!! I am so Brave!! hahah

Start off with only a few minutes and slowly work your way up you need to learn your skins tolerance to the lamps. goodluck Spyguy

| Tanning beds Posted: 7/29/2009 8:54:35 PM | never been a tanner. call me crazy but i never felt the need to suck the life out of my skin for the sake of pleasing others. (and dont even try fooling yourself with that "I do it for myself" baloney) | |
|
| Tanning beds Posted: 7/29/2009 9:42:47 PM | I am a tanner but I never have used a tanning bed. My skin just sucks in the sunlight and turns a nice golden colour. I do not work at it but in my younger days I did. I tanned until parts of my stomach were almost black.
However, I have never have used a tanning bed. Very close to my dogs' vet is this tanning salon. I often see the couple who run the salon tanning in the parking lot in front of their salon. They pull out their lawn chairs. It is very unusual to see people tanning in a parking lot. They even have their pure white dog outside with them. I think it is some sort of Eskimo dog. To me, these people are really odd.
When I was a sun worshiper, people did not know the ill effects of sun tanning but now they do. It seems stupid to pretend that it is not bad for you.
I know someone who almost died from the most deadliest form of skin cancer.
If you have to tan, use the sun rather than a tanning bed.

| Tanning beds Posted: 7/29/2009 9:57:10 PM | Medical Practitioners will have to reconsider their recommendations to people to use tanning beds for Sunlight therapy to treat SAD, Arthritis therapy for those with JRA and Acne therapy.
There are people that use these beds for other purposes than to just please people. Just to clarify for poster above.

I don't suffer from SAD, psoriasis, or a vitamin D deficiency ( to name a few things people use tanning beds for) but I have used tanning beds simply because I like the way it makes my skin look and feel to me .. not to others. I have a naturally dark complexion to begin with, so it's not even so much about the tan per se. The warmth of the lights also feel good on a cold winter's day.
I don't disagree that the UV rays can be harmful, but there are also some known benefits as well.
Before using a tanning bed, one should educate them self and use common sense.
Everything in moderation.
Well, except for chocolate.

SAD, psoriasis, or a vitamin D deficiency
there are other safer remedies to help reduce the effects of SAD, psoriasis, or a vitamin D deficiency. At home or work replace common fluorescent lights with full spectrum (5500 Kelvin light temperature) bulbs
from wiki
In recent years, full-spectrum lighting has been used in the treatment of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) through the use of "light boxes" that mimic natural sunlight, which may not be available in some areas during the winter months. Light is an environmental stimulus for regulating circadian cycles.
Lightbox therapy, otherwise known as phototherapy, is a recognized modality for depression (such as SAD). Depending on the quality of the light, it is estimated that 10,000 lux is needed for effective treatment. Not all light boxes are the same.
Use iodine enriched bath salt when having a bath. Note in some patient iodine, digoxin and clonidine, have also triggered or aggravated psoriasis in certain individuals.Do not experiment, consult with your physician.

I don't suffer from SAD, psoriasis, or a vitamin D deficiency To further the advice from ML1, Vitamin D is readily available as a nutritional supplement, often in pill form, and can be found at drugstores and grocers.
It is recommended that All Canadians should supplement their Vitamin D intake because we don't get enough of it naturally from exposure to the sun, due to our northern latitude. You might be able to skip taking it in summer if you spend a lot of time outdoors, but should at least supplement in autumn, winter and spring.

| Tanning beds Posted: 8/2/2009 10:16:47 PM | In my experience, as a sun "needer", tanning beds totally save my life in the winter months. Yes, I read the reports and hear the opinions of others, but ultimately I make up my own mind based on my own experience. For whatever reason, my skin improves in texture and softness whenever I use a tanning bed, as does my mood. I shower just before I tan, use NONE of the commercial "acclerators". They are full of harmful chemicals! Then I finish by putting on my skin a lotion with Vit. E. - The sun, as much as I love it: It doesn't love me. I feel parched, burned and dry afterwards...Which I never feel with the tanning beds! - Those full spectrum lights that "make so much sense" are just baloney. I tried everything under the sun (pun intended): Vit.D, all kinds of devices and lights and the only thing that helps my SAD is tanning in the beds.
In the 20 years that I've been tanning, the only concern I have is the quality of the equipment and the integrity of the etablishment....Are they cleaning the beds properly? How about the booths? Are the beds of good quality? How often do they change the bulbs? I am finding that newer isn't necessarily better. Perhaps the opposite. Nowdays businesses cut corners by advertising theeir newer beds, but since thy are of a lesser quality, they don't tan as well but rather just heat up, thus promoting very heavily the sale of their "moisturizers", "tanning accellerators" and all kids of enhancing products that are actually harmful for the skin.
One way to tell right off the bat is by the appearance of the staff: Are they tanned at all? Are they dried up? Do they have a noticeable healthy glow?
Yup, been there and done that, and will do it again as soon as I find quality. MN

| Tanning beds Posted: 8/3/2009 10:06:24 AM | I have a all natural tan.........................YES....all the time!
I was born in the Caribbean....very intense sun.
I too do not get enough sun. My home in North Van is covered over in clouds a good 6 months of the year...very grey and gloomy. I crave sunlight...sunshine...the warmth of the sun and I would love to be living in a warmer climate to get it.... I would not go to a tanning bed to get that additional sunlight.
I am enjoying the heatwave right now...but i do cover up when I go out....big hats...sunblock.... I tanned very easily....my face and hands and legs are dark...but the rest of me is paler than any brown person should be....lol.
I have to be careful not to over-expose my skin to the suns rays I don't want to be a large melanoma. I have had the doctors use light therapy of some sort at the dermatogolist when I was a teenager.

| Tanning beds Posted: 8/4/2009 9:45:57 PM | Thanks to this wretched heat wave my skin is golden --- beautifully tanned. As always, I am the golden girl. However, on a more serious note, I would not mock melanoma. I am lost a colleague to it.

| Tanning beds Posted: 8/4/2009 11:38:53 PM | Was someone mocking melanoma? ^^^^^^^^^^^
I fear the thought of discovering a new spot on my skin that could possibly lead to skin Cancer.
|
| Tanning beds Posted: 8/4/2009 11:48:12 PM | I used to always go to the tanning beds a couple of weeks before heading off to someplace tropical to get my body/skin used to what is yet to come as far as the hot sun that I will be getting is concerned. However, after the most recent report on tanning beds and certain cancers, I won't be doing that anymore. I will just get as much natural sun exposure as possible before heading off on my future vacations. | |

Was someone mocking melanoma?
You weren't but I thought I was coming dangerously close to mocking melanoma. I was the one going on about my golden tan. I know where it may lead and I know I have spent too much time in the sun. On a positive note, I have lots of Vitamin D in my system for now.

| Tanning beds Posted: 10/9/2009 8:16:04 PM | I haven't used a tanning bed for about 2 years now....and when I finally went white again, I noticed something new...something no one has mentioned in here...
frikkkkken wrinkles had started...and I didn't notice them, while I was tanned...grrr all my fault, I didn't do the research before I became a "tanning addict".
Hi, my name is thumper and I am addicted to tanning.
I haven't been in two years now...just doesn't mix well with botox, lol....what a cycle eh? *wink wink....
you couldn't pay me to go back to tanning...pink nipples and no wrinkles are just fine with me....not to mention, no skin cancer.
OT...I used to go three times a week before working out, for about 7 years or so... and my skin is finally soft again...
