tigress, how about you post the link to that thread and let the mod and admin check it out...
I doubt you'd get any virus, spam from pof but it seems that no matter how many times this statement is repeated, there are always people out there who think you can. too bad...

Hijack this is an awesome tool, but like mentioned it is for advanced users - it grabs information off your registry and can help you "fix it". If your not carefull you may "fix" something thats not broken and potentially cause computer problems.
Security software - dont just download anything that looks like it will help, becuase alot of free antivirus/spyware software may cause more issues then they fix. If something 'pops up' that will clean your pop ups, i wouldnt trust it. Or if something 'scanned my computer and found problems' i would close the window and run my trusted software rather then trust a random pop up.
Pop-ups its important to close pop-ups by the X in the top right corner. Some pop-ups will have ok and cancel and may look like windows messages, but the person who made the pop up made the buttons, so the cancel button can do what they want it to.

I personnally recommend AVG -if you dont want to pay for a firewall like symantec(norton)/mcaffee/zonealarm or other retail firewalls
spybot and ad-aware are good anti spyware/adware programs
theres a bunch of good free antivirus software out there too, all i can think of off the top of my head is pc-cillin housecall which is web based, of course name brands like norton/mcaffee are quite good.

when using this software you should only ever have 1 firewall (2 or more may cause connection problems), 1 antivirus can be active using realtime protection running at a time (2 may cause conflict or recursive scanning - dont know havent tried it... also each will take up some system resources while active ie slower performance). realtime protection isnt required, it does a virus scan on new files while you get them. If your computer is a bit slow you may want to disable it, and just do regular anti-virus scans when your not on the computer (most name brand stuff will help or even set up regular scans for you).

For scans, the more scans you run the better as each vendor may have found different new malware but generally unless your having a serious issue keeping 1 good anti spyware and 1 good antivirus up to date is enough, and run them at least once a week.

What names mean basically (some bad things go into more then 1 category but this is a basic idea of what people mean)
Malware - Malicious Software (generic term for bad programs)
Adware - usually cause pop-ups (advertise to you)
Spyware - track personal info (can range from web sites you visit to info you put into sites)
Trojan - malicious software that claims to be something else (ie a game) or hides in a useful program
Virus - uncommon (doesnt make money) causes computer not to function correctly or slowly
Worm - Replicates by itself generally through network (usually causes perfomance problems because its replicating soo much) (other stuff you usually get from visiting infected/malicious sites or downloading infected/malicous software)
Firewall - blocks/monitors ports on computer and can restrict programs access to internet
Port - used for communication on the internet, ie when you want a web page you request on port 80, ports are how you computer knows what signal goes to msn instead of internet explorer or even which internet explorer window if you have a couple up.

Poo.

Spysweeper doesn't get them all

No indivdual spyware removal program does.

It's best to use 3+ programs for removal.

Spybot search and destroy is very good, by the way its a good idea to boot into safe mode before running any kind of anti virus program .
