What do women consider average weight?
Posted: 8/30/2008 6:13:01 PM
It's a lovely Saturday Night... and I just spent the last 30 minutes reading the non-sense on the 9 pages of this forum chat.

What do women consider average... The average size of a 'Woman' in America is a size 14.. I am not average and feel no need to lie about it on my profile.

However, there are quite a few comments on this thread that yes are very.. very.. old but prejudice nonetheless. If you are concerned that someone was deceitful on their profile, call them on it. Don't bash an entire group of people by using derogatory terms such as fatty... Most round/obese individuals know that they are overweight and need motivation to change their lives and do it in a healthy consistent fashion. What they don't need is what I consider verbal abuse, dirty looks or staring or what others might consider ignorant BS.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was an instant cure for obesity... and ignorance...

What happened with the world that all compassion and consideration went out the door?

The way I break it down is:
Thin: Underweight or toeing the line, not really toned, just kind of..bony.
Athletic: Defined, toned muscles, no extra body fat.
Average: Not carrying extra weight, but not toned or having very much muscle.
A few extra: Sigh. This one you gotta be liberal with because there's a wide range between average and BBW. So this can span like 40 pounds. There should be one between this and Big.
BBW/Big&Tall: 40ish+ pounds overweight.

Body type/shape is just that.. your body shape. Being 40 pounds overweight and playing golf does not make one athletic. You can work out daily but your body is still overweight. I work out. I lift weights. I could still stand to lose 15-20 pounds. My body shape is still "a few pounds" (I'd say more, actually, but i'm definitely not bbw; hence the need for a 'tweener) and not "athletic" because I still have a lot of extra body fat.

I see plenty of people who choose "thin" when they have an average body shape. They aren't carrying extra fat, but they're just kind of toneless. "A few extra" seems to be a polite way to say slightly overweight, and BBW/Big & tall seems to be polite for obese.
If one were really "a few extra pounds," say 5 pounds, I'm sure they'd still fit average/athletic (depending on their muscle tone) since 5 pounds spread over an entire body isn't going to be that big of a difference.
Choosing "average" because the "average" woman in the US is a size 14 is silly. All that means is the average woman is fat. Having being fat becoming more common just means there are more bigger body types, it doesn't change the definition of the body types.

I digress....

I have men messaging me all the time telling me I need to change my body shape answer from "a few extra" because they say I'm not. This is courtesy of all the other people around here using it so liberally it's come to mean morbidly obese. I refuse to change it because I DON'T have an average or athletic frame at 5'4" and 145; despite weightlifting regularly and the "average" American woman being larger than me.

I would have to agree with piscescoda.. Those definitions certainly seem to be appropriate.. I actually entered this forum to post the exact same question however, did a search and found this one.. I know it is dificult for both men and women to say that they are overweight... I personally am very lucky that I do not have to deal with extra weight... I do not respond to a profile that says anything other than thin or slim or even average... Average is really hard to deal with... Unless there are numerous photo's which not many people post, there is no way of knowing... Are we allowed to ask how much a woman weighs? Afterall, I am 5'7" and have had a few women tell me that they prefer someone taller... Am I allowed to say without being mean, that I am looking for someone that is under a certain weight (when considering height as well)?
I have not met one woman that has included "Average Weight" that I would say is actually average.. If She is 5'4", I would say that average is 120 - 130. Athletic would also fit that description.. Am I wrong? When we meet and she is clearly 5'4" and 160, I immediately feel like I have been betrayed... To her, perhaps she really does feel of average weight... It is a tough issue and I am sure that all of us have to deal with it..

danny, i am chubby and know this. you have to date the people you are attracted to. if someone is not into a woman with more than ample curves, i don't want them to date me. all of us has likes/dislikes. knowingly or unknowingly, we all know what we like!

Hi Dan...I can relate to your comment and Jo's as well..For one..I think far too many lie and or mislead others in profiles..I know...shocking huh...I have many conversations with men over this same thing..I just dont know why a women or any one would set them selves up for the rejection of saying something and being another..I do agree a lot of profiles dont include a lot of pics..and maybe non showing a full body shot..so it is hard to judge..I say we are all intitled to like what we like..be attracted to what ever entices us..and the meetings should be more even..But..not everything goes this way...I my self could not stand the rejection over and over again to state i was slim or even average when i was not..I think the blows to the ego would be devistating...face it...we all should know our short comings..I say applaude them and seek out thouse who are looking for just that type..then no disapointment in someones eyes..I would just hate to be crushed over and over again not feeling like i measured up when it was my own going that was setting myself up for failure...jmo...

A little smartazz here, but... I wouldn't call bad dates or being rejected from POF people a failure by any means lol. I'll bite my tongue on the rest.
I do have to agree that not everyone is for everyone. It's great we all have a hodgepodge of choices. Nothing wrong at all with knowing/voicing what you want and accepting nothing else. If people have issue with your choices and honesty, or misrepresents themselves, that is their issue not yours.

See.. the average weight of american women is different from what an average healthy weight is..

And as we get older.. its still larger than a high schooler.

If 60% of America is overweight.. or obese.. your odds of finding a slim one is getting.. slim

But.. its not wrong to say in your profile that.. "I am in shape... looking for the same".. and when you "interview" them before meeting them.. make sure they know.. you are looking for someone in a specific weight range.. and you will scare away the ones that dont fit that.. Some may even get ANGRY.

I prefer someone similar to me ..i dont think its wrong

I read that 12/14 is now the average dress size (69% of women having greater then 40 inch hips). The hourglass figure is morphing into pear shape for most women. So sad!!!!

Yeah I agree. Gotta love those hippy women! Besides it's nice to have cushion to hug instead of bone!

robbity...my brother him self told me..
your inseam gets shorter in perportion to waste size getting bigger..He was a 34 inseam...and now a 30 or 32so...seems your right...

i just know that they keep making changes to say womens clothing size to make us not feel the size we are.(make you a 8 instead of a 12..)..like its a bad thing..and all you see is skin and bone ...in media...but our real people real women are in most cases considered overweight...according to statistics...we go round and round...i say feel good...accept your self and do try to think of your health...but...we have to get to a place that we love our selves...its hard to fight image differences and preception....jmo

Danny - you're the one who is fishing... you are allowed to ask for whatever it is that you are looking for. It's actually easier for us curvier women when we know a man is looking for a thin or petite woman. I agree that people - both men and women - should be honest when putting together their profiles. I have yet to meet a man who looks anything like his posted photo... but, when the personality seems to fit and conversation goes well, sometimes you've just got to take a chance...

i once worked with a girl who was like 6 foot tall.. and she was reed thin.. weighed ALOT.

numbers dont mean squat... health vigor.. and how fit a person is matters most
