Here we flippin' go again - 'Oooh! A man on a Harley is so cooool'

There are basically the two types of Harley rider: The genuine HD enthusiast, who deserves genuine respect for his (misguided) devotion if nothing else, then there's the 'Weekend Outlaw'. Usually 40 - 50 years old, parents wouldn't let him have a bike when he was young, wife wouldn't let him when he was married. Now he's divorced, has some spare cash, and knows d1ck about motorcycles.

The dream customer for the HD marketing men!

'Hmm. What shall I buy? Well.... The Ducatis look cool but I don't have the balls and/or ability to ride one of those, because if I screw up it'll mean death or hospital. They're a bit hardcore for me.
I know! I'll buy a Harley! Women think they're so cool, they have lots of chrome, lots of noise and image, but no actual performance so they won't make me look silly because I can't actually ride'

So he buys one, and all the HD 'lifestyle' that goes along with it. Cutoff denims, HD aftershave, HD boxers, bandana, etc. etc. He even buys some HD stuff for the office to show that young babe in accounts that he's really got an 'edge' and doesn't spend every Saturday out on the Golf course, only every other Saturday.

For many years I rode a Ducati 900SL. My leathers were black, my knee sliders were worn down through hard cornering, and if my tyres were melted on the edges then I was a very happy boy. I've lost count of the clowns I've laughed at as they try to negotiate a corner on their 'Hawg'!

Also, NO Englishman should EVER get away with calling his Harley a 'Hog'

I was down at the Ace Cafe a while back and me and the other sportsbike riders were highly amused by the antics of 'Weekend Outlaws'. I asked a pal what the little leather roll was for under the headlight. A Fireblade rider told me it's where the rider keeps his butt plug and tube of KY! How we laughed.

Genuine Harley guys, who ride in all weathers and know their machines? Nice blokes, despite what they may look like. I have a lot of time for them.

Part-time poseurs? I just laugh!

There's something about women too.......................

Leesburg '09 coming soon , lol
I always scrape my pegs on the sport cruiser. Not so on the RF.......gettn' closer.
pointing up................get a Buell.
I've had mcycles since I was 13.
The neat thing about HD's is that one can add thousands to it to give it some power compared to a Vic........................LMAO....................all that chrome won't get you home.

The Ride is all it is about , some of the most fantastic loyal friends I have are riders and if someone lost their back seat rider,,,, to a rider , maybe treating her better would of kept her , or maybe you just picked up the wrong one to begin with
Most of the riders I know have great integrity
I am grateful to ride with them

All motorcycles are great fun! Had many of them all my life. Currently on a H-D sportster in black n chrome. It spent the winter in the house for im lacking a garage. It just made no-sense to bring a tree from the woods into the house (christmas)and the bike FREEZING in storage!

Harley Davidsons are beautiful, well crafted machines, as are most big name bikes on the market. I personally balk at the idea of placing my nether regions on somthing referred to as a "b1tch patch". Rather insulting I have to say!!! I am much more attracted to something I can manage myself...the Bulle(i think thats how you spell it)is an awsome looking bike!!! I prefer the sports bike styling, but I'm sceptical about how comfortable it would be on a long distance trip. NOTHING...beats a dirt bike...Kaw's are my favorite!!!

gee....im almost ashamed to own so many harleys..... nah, nevermind, it passed

i would like to know how this simple topic got turned into such an anti harley "my junks better than your junk" forum?

i prefer HD, fine, to some it makes me un informed (i dont even come close to fitin the rest of the stereotypes rattled off here since im no where near 50, nor do i play golf, hold a phd, or was forbidden to have one at any point in my life), but hey, ive had hondas, kawasakis, and a suzuki or 3. ive never held personal taste against anyone (i suppose since i prefer ford, added to prefering HD, that makes me a certifiable retard??).

the folks i ride with all have their own taste and style, and in the shop i work on all of em (theyre all a peice of shiit when they break, just listen to the rider when his bike dies, no matter what the breed )

to me its not WHAT you ride, it IF you ride, and i really dont get whay so many are so insulting because of someone elses personal taste in motorcycles..... does their choice really effect you in any way??

Well Mr. Tater Salad,
I wish all Harley riders were like you. You seem like a cool dude. Unfortunately, you're a rare one. Almost all the Harley riders and the wannabes that I know, and I know quite a few extremely well, are a pitiful bunch. No matter how many times you point out that in comparison road tests with other bikes in the same class, almost all Harley models are lucky to finish somewhere in the middle, you just can't convince them that it's ok for people to ride other brands. My bike looks like a Harley Softail Custom, but it's only a Yamaha 650. When I go riding with these guys, I'm the one that's constantly having to wait on them to catch up. Now on city streets they can leave me sitting, but in the twisty mountain roads that are so common here, I'm always waiting on them. I am also able to ride farther than they can and have no problem riding in weather that they balk at. I've got 30,000 more miles on my bike than any two of them put together and I've got the newest bike. They're morons! If you could, why don't you rub some of your tolerance and intelligence off on some of your Harley brothers?

i guess its the caliber of people you choose to associate with.... BTW, i get the thrill of watchin our ABATE chapter administer the skills test for the state for licensing, i see alot of dropped bikes, and ALOT of fails due to too many points, and contrary to your theroy, by a large majority, its the sport bikes having the biggest issues both with hitting cones and dropped bikes..... you know, the ones that are supposed to be superior to a harley in manuverability? I know, now im slingin shiit, but i did have to point out MY observations

Anyhow, i guess we're just alot more tolerant round here, guys that ride with us are on everything from the new hyubussa to dressed 'glides, the only time i harass the imports is when the girls complain about sore assses after a couple hours ridin with their guy and end up on the back of one of the HDs (who knew a Mustang gel seat would work to pick up chicks??? )

ScottyMac.

In a nutshell, I think you're talking a load of tosh.

Don't judge a book by its cover - I've been a biker for more years than my profile would give credit to but for the past five, I've been into the Harley scene.

It's not as you portray it in so much as we're the slaves of the corporation - it's a lifestyle choice - which I, ME, THIS FREE-SPIRITED PERSON, has CHOSEN to belong to, That's what it's about mate. Nothing more, nothing less. And for what it's worth, I'm a slave to nobody. Sure, I need to buy some bits and pieces from the stealership because of the warranty - but isn't that the same for any Yamazukikwakahondo rice-burning Tupperware torpedo owner anyway?

The social scene - and all that goes with it - more than makes up for what's on offer with the testosterone-fuelled Japanese penis extension.

WSS - no "U"missing!! LOL

I am not sure that Harley riders are a "slave to the corporation" any more than anyone else. I mean just look at the cost of after-market accessories for any bike. We all are to a degree.
I find the idea of a lifestyle fashioned around a motorcycle or any other possession a bit disturbing personally. Just one man's opinion though.
For myself I prefer metric cruisers. If Harley comes out with a bike that includes ALL the features I demand (liquid-cooled, hydraulic lifters, and shaft drive) I will look at them.

Last nice guy, you pretty much nailed it. There are so many Harleys in my neck of the woods all parked in a row in front of the coffe shops, shining, gleaming even. When I look at the odometers of these beasts I more than not see three year old bikes with less than 5,000 miles on them. I have an old BMW that I am saving for my son that has 400,000 miles on it..My 2000 BMW has 163,000 miles. When I do one of my adventures I am always aware that near towns and cities I will run into Harleys and once on the open road they seem to get sparce. Like you said, true riders deserve respect, posers don't deserve my attention, I will stop and help them when they crash though.

It's admirable, that part of the West Coast American psyche that loves to remain the eternal teen. I must repeat what I said here before-
From a British point of view...

If you're quite advanced in years, large in the middle... wearing tight black leathers from head to feet... and you have the long white Mexican moustache... and newly acquired a Harley... You have that whole classic, crusty, replica-outlaw thing going on... in fact you're a WALRUS ON A BIKE

All you need to finish it off are a nice pair of frogman flippers...

arf arf arf...

Harley doesn't make a bike that appeals to me, other than the new XR1200. I could see me on one of those in the future.

The 'strom suits my style of riding much better. Plus the protective layer of road grime that it usually sports keeps it's lack of chrome from being very noticeable :P

I'll take my metric cruiser any day over a Harley. I ride an 1100cc Honda. It runs great, it rides great, It sounds great, it looks great. and best of all it's paid for, I paid $5000 cash for it while some of the guys I ride with on their $25,000 Harleys are strapped to that monthly payment...................funny thing is, at the end of the day my hair is just as wind blown as theirs..............to each his own

Yeah, alot of men have emailed me and said "I have a Harley", like it's supposed to impress me---NOT. I think some guys on POF use their Harley to try to get a woman and it probably works for some. I'm just a woman not into it--now tell me you just wanna get to know ME and be honest and my heart melts....sigh. haaaa

I love riding dirtbikes out in the country but I lost 2 friends last year to motorcycle accidents and I can't see myself ever riding around in traffic in a city...it's just not worth it. You make 1 mistake and you're either dead or wish you were dead if you're going at any speed at all and cars just flat out don't see motorcycles. Also, to all you HD owners out there get a G.D. muffler!!! I truly don't see how it's legal for those stupid ass things to make all that f-ing noise and it's extremely discourteous and annoying to everybody else no matter how cool you think it is.

^^^harley riders will be quick to point out that all that obnoxious noise is a good way to make sure more people in cars know they're there.

however on a purely aesthetic level i agree with you. i feel waves of murderous rage rising in my chest when i hear one of those really bone-rattling loud ones.

As with any group of people, there are those who are just idiots trying to show off. There are also those who like to ride for the sake of the ride, do as many charity rides as possible and don't really give a rats a** what anybody else is riding just as long as they are riding.

I've been on a bike five times...the first three rides all resulted in accidents, nothing broken, but lots of scratches and bruises; then I mustered up the courage to get on again when a first date showed up on one ...after explaining my bad luck on bikes the a..hole drove about 90 mph back to his house...I got off the bike and called a cab to take me home; the last ride was free of accidents and earth-shattering speed...but do I want to date a guy just because he has a Harley or a bike of any type....no thanks...

I personally don't like being a discourteous and annoying ***hole.

I love being one.

It's my way of getting back at 'the stupid ass things' driving cars that 'just flat out don't see motorcycles'...

and

don't see pedestrians crossing crosswalks

and

don't see kids that might dart out from nowhere.

So, if you ever find me pulling up to your drivers door, and reving the piss out of my loud Harley three feet from your left ear, and apologizing for disturbing your sleep..... well... maybe I'm trying to wake you the f--k up, before the light turns green and you launch that piece of s--t down the road, in your eternal quest to create some new speed bumps at any opportunity.

Those who truly understand the real problem out there, will not mind the noise.

It is not a person's right to drive amidst perfect peace and quiet, so that they can continue to drive whilst sleeping with their eyes open. Get the a--holes off the road who are asleep, and then this a--hole will think about getting quiet pipes. Until then, enjoy.

Sincerely,

Mr. Heywood Jablomy

I think it's a personal choice as to what we ride and how we ride it. while it does crack me up to see someone (you know who you are) who goes and buy's a harley and every peice of harley attire you can afford, then all of the sudden your a hells angel out to stick it to the man. And as far as the people complaining about loud pipes, you must not have ever ridden a bike then. because loud pipes save lives whether you think so or not. multiple times ive been riding and some jackass on his phone doesnt hear or see me and cut's right over onto me damn near killing me.

I'll keep my loud pipes, atleast that way you'll notice me... because i really get tired of punching people's mirror's off because they damn near run me off the road.

and ive ridden all different styles of bikes i enjoy riding streetbikes for the pucker factor, and nothing get's the blood flowing like a good highway wheelie.

but i get the same kicks out of riding my old man's 51 panhead with a jockey shift.

everyone has there own reason for riding a motorcycle young, old, harley, or a one of custom.

to me it doesnt matter how much chrome or how much money you've spent on it aslong as you enjoy the ride

I'll have to agree with all the posts here about us riders with loud pipes.
A rider MUST ride defensively and always be on the lookout for the inconsiderate auto driver. Loud Pipes do save lives. When an auto cuts in front of you or pulls out in front of you the auto will always win. All riders have had this experience more than once and it scares the hell out of us. The loud pipes are a "heads up" that we are there.

I must say this again.........The frequence of an auto cutting off a bike is very very often. It is not the ocasional occurence.
Remember guys and gals.......Keep the shiney side up!

ah yes, men and their harleys...what a thrill...i was exposed to them when i was young as my 2 much older brothers had them and almost every guy i was involved with had a bike of some kind at least up until my ex....i do miss that thrill of being snuggled up behind a guy as well and the freedom you feel when on one!

i think it's the sense of adventure and freedom you feel that you are attracted to...have you ever considered getting your bike license? you may be able to attract the biker man of your dreams that way.
