| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 2/18/2008 6:58:37 AM | | Rats actually get quite attached to their humans, especially compared to other rodents like gerbils and hamsters. If he had a snake too though, maybe some of them were dinner for snakey. I think the Motown naming is cool. LOL, obviously, I'd be fine with dating rat boy. The only thing I'd be concerned about is if he still caught them wild - you never know which one's going to have hantavirus. | |

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 2/18/2008 7:14:59 AM | The guy sounds a bit bizzarre having taken them from the street and having so many..that would freak me. I have 4 pet rats (fancy rats from a breeder) though and they are great pets.
Bethlett..your little roomate is gorgeous!
The only thing with ratties though..they are very social animals and need to live with at least on of their own kind unless you have a lot of time to spend with them. They live longer, healthier and much happier lives with another ratty of the same sex to snuggle up with.

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 2/18/2008 7:27:51 PM | lol, i've heard of overreacting, but holy crap.
i had pet rats the majority of my childhood. Definitely the best pets i ever had.
When i was like 10 i used to go everywhere with this one rat and he would ride in the hood of my sweater. I'd walk into a 7-11 and he'd pop out and people would lose their freakin minds and i'd be laughing away. Funny to think back on.

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 2/18/2008 7:43:23 PM | | Ok I have to do it.....I met a woman that had 1 pet rat. Believe me I have no love for rats what so ever but he didnt bother me. I guess it was a good thing her and I didnt click. Im sure if we had the relationship between her rat, my dog and cat would have been real short. The dog and cat both would have been in instant attack mode!!! | |

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 2/18/2008 7:50:49 PM | Growing up I had several pet rats over the years(Black & White) but one (DAISY) was the family's love..she was soooo smart, funny, and went everywhere with me. Followed me wherever I went.
We moved back to my home state and I was playing with her (hide and seek) in the front yard and a neighbor's dog attacked and killed her. Was the most traumatic time of my childhood. Even my stoic Dad wept that day. (Never again had one since then. ) They are great pets!
Now..street rats as pets? Only if they are born in captivity and even then , would be a challenge. Lab rats are bred for good temperament and health. Street rats not. I think that would be way too wierd...even to me!

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 2/18/2008 9:52:01 PM | Having ridiculous numbers of ANY species is downright bizarre. Was this guy on meds? I'm a little suspicious though - perhaps there were only 2 or 3 cages? If that was the case, he didn't have anywhere near the number you think he had - overcrowding would result in them killing one another. Is it possible that you saw "some" and just panicked? Still, even one "street" rat would bother me - store bought, well-cared for rat or even a few, no problem. I'm a pet person... 2 dogs, a cat, 2 lizards and multiple types of fish in two large aquariums - and the vast majority of my pets are rescues (one lizard was purchased for company for the other - when she and her mate were seized by the humane society, her mate died from starvation and she was lonely without him so I got her a female friend). As long as pets are well cared for and socialized, it makes no difference what species they are. When I was a kid, one of the other kids in the neighbourhood had a skunk (de-scented and spayed) and she was a lot of fun and never even tried to bite anyone. I'd love to have a snake too but my mother would never again set foot in my house, so I don't. Ditto on a pet rat. I'm not real big on ferrets though - - - but, to each his own.
I'd be more attracted to a man who is able to properly care for and love a pet - it just means they are able to care. Dozens of street rats means he needs an intervention.

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 8/18/2008 9:33:59 PM | I just got 2 female rats; a veriberk one and a champagne hooded. Both are adorable although unsocialized due to being born in a pet store (my mistake!) but I'm slowly working with them to get them to trust me. I've seen great improvements in the last 3 days alone.
They are wonderful pets with amazing personalities and behave much like dogs when properly raised, socialized and cared for. They bond very well with humans and you can be sure they consider you one of their own when they groom your eye brows or the back of your necks.
I've had 4 hamsters in my life (last one died last week) and I don't think I'd *EVER* have another one. They stink, doesn't matter how often you clean the cage, they're anti-social, and they just don't care whether you're there or not. Rats, on the other hand, are very very intelligent and love their human companions.
I am a rat lover. I always have been and I am so happy to finally have my girls. :)
There is so much misinformation among the masses. It's perfectly okay to have hamsters, mice and gerbils for pets - but mention rats and people instinctively recoil in horror. "Rats?!" they say, "why?!". Well - WHY NOT? They're a hell of a lot better than some of the other pets people have: unsocialized, dangerous breeds of dogs, yappy annoying little dogs (and I have a little dog and she's not yappy), cats who really don't give a hoot, and fish - most useless pet on the planet. Not to mention, it's incredibly rare for a domestic rat to bite. I picked my girls up the moment I got them and while they were scared, they didn't bite. If it had been a hamster, a bunny, a guinea pig, a gerbil or a mouse? I'd be missing a piece of flesh. Give me rats and dogs any day.

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 8/18/2008 11:07:36 PM | | Snakes are feed rats or mice right ? Might be why he had so many ? If he was that good at catching them off the streets ? He needs to be in rat/mouse business . Have never known anyone that could catch them that good. I don't think i could have been in there very long. Snakes give me the creeps. So do mice/rats. Although i had a ferret that i loved dearly . | |

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 8/19/2008 10:08:03 AM | | Ohh, he raised his own food for the snake? But could he handle all of Motown getting swallowed? There's no way it was 200. It was probably like 20. I guess everyone has a different rat tolerance rating. Myself, I would probably be okay with dating a guy with 8 rats tops. Any more, and they are a freak. | |

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 8/19/2008 4:45:47 PM | I had a pet rat once, got her from a pet store though. She was intelligent, curious, clean, all in all a very cool pet. The downside of pet rats though is their relatively short lifespan, thats why I went back to having cats. | |

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 8/20/2008 12:37:25 AM | Rats are very clean and don't carry as many diseases as has been associated with them...mostly it's the fleas that carry the diseases. Buying a pet rat in a pet store or from a breeder is fine.. catching wild rats is not good.
I have no problems with most pets as long as the owner keeps them clean and well taken care of. There is no need to go overboard however. I personally don't care for snakes, lizards or frogs that require live food. I don't like having to go to the pet store that often..lol

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 8/20/2008 1:32:32 AM | | lol...lol....lol....lol...I'm so sorry. LOL...I wouldn't call the poor guy a nightmare though. Maybe he should put "Rodent Zoologist" in his profile. LOL...LOL | |

A mere observation, but why would he be deemed a 'freak' because he owned and named his pet rats?
Exactly what I was wondering. I mean granted I personally wouldn't have rats as and I think it is a little bit odd to go out looking for them....but it doesn't seem like a "freak-ish" situation.
If there were like over 10 and they were running around or he slept with them or something then I would understand. But people have pet mice in cages sooo I guess pet rats are similar...and what is wrong with a python? If you don't like them okay fine but lots of people have snakes as pets.
I think the OP was OVER-reacting.

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 8/20/2008 4:23:18 AM | I think I've posted on here before..but anyway..I'm a rat owner and I find going out and catching wild rats to keep as pets pretty bizarre.
They are great pets but I'd recommend anyone wanting one to go to a breeder rather than a pet shop. Many pet shops don't care for rats correctly , give out bad advice and also the rats from pet stores are more likely prone to Myco and other illnesses.
Rats from breeders are bred for health and temperament. Anyone looking to get rats should also bear in mind that they are very social creatures and need fellow rats for company of the same sex.
Good to see some rat owners on here!!

| my date had pet rats ! Posted: 9/7/2008 12:29:11 PM | LMFAOOOOOOOOOOO.. ok hands down this is the FUNNIEST THREAD I have read so far! I laughed crazy reading about you tellin this guy : "I told him I was a certified pest exterimnator and we just werent going to click..... "
HAHAHA I had no idea so many people keep rats as pets and personally I would not want one ( as pet or pest), at least he has them in cages tho....The upshot is that this guy has a loving warm heart for animals and that's sweet really .. ( snakes scare me and no way I could go near one either )..LOL lol@ what a freak hahahhaha Thanks for the laughs OP!!!!
