Seriously, I used to run a pet shop, and parents used to come in wanting a hamster for their kids, I used to try to steer them towards a rat. Rats are much better pets than hamsters. I did manage to convert quite a few!
It's a little unfair to say that pet shops are somehow worse than breeders to buy from. We always bought from breeders, and all our pets were sold with excellent advice. We had to close ours because of the large "pet suprmarket" type things now opening up in the UK. I fear for the future of the pet industry here to be honest. | |

It needed a c-section and she had to rush it to the vet! needless to say, he left immediately! | |

Posted: 12/19/2008 7:18:54 AM | it sounds like he had so many rats because he was probably feeding them to his snake. i used to work at a pet store and i know rats can be around 6-7$ for just ONE. it makes sense that he would get them off the street (cuz they're free) and start breeding them although a lot of customers i had would just buy a pair and breed them that way. i think it's normal for the IDEA but i think it's gross to get them off the street with all the diseases they can carry...and maybe he should've warned ya first..that would freak me out too with all those cages | |

Posted: 12/19/2008 7:46:41 PM | Rats actually make excellent pets. They are really intelligent. They just have a bad rep because of wild rats living off garbage and in sewers. I have worked at petstores and the rats I worked with were always nice and easy to handle. I used to have mice as pets when I was younger, but my cats ate them, lol.
Perhaps since he also has a python, the rats are it's dinner? | |

Geez OP. Maybe you should just move to a place where there are no animals at all...... And I suppose you deny that you are one yourself.
And actually rats do not create diseases. They spread them. And most often it is humans that have created those.. And rats are very clean animals and very social and nice little pets.
To compare a pet-rat to a wild-rat is just as stupid as to compare a pet-dog to a wild-dog.

Also something they told me about rats I didn't know. Apparently one of them died and the other one was alone and it died a week later. My friend's finacee said if a pair of rats (like a couple i guess male and female) looses it's companion and you don't spent like an entire week of constantly giving it attention and love they die of heartbreak! I don't know if that's true or not but it was pretty sad :( | |

They don't bite, unlike hamsters. I understand peoples visceral fear and revulsion of rats. We are ancient enemies. I have now one rat left. A female, hooded nun. That describes her markings. Her friend died. Usually I keep them in pairs. They are social animals. If I bought her (marbles) a companion, I couldn't get one older than 6 weeks and marbles will die first and this is why I never get out of it. Because I want to phase them out. | |

I would rather people tell me if they have those ankle biter dogs, as they are not my type of pet. I hope he separates the males and females so they don't breed anymore unless he is feeding his python the surplus. Consider if he had just walked in your place and started complaining about your choice in animals.

Hey!! I've got two pet female rats. They're gorgeous. They are intelligent, clean and fun to watch and play with.
They come to me when I call them, I give them little baths and let them outside for a play.
Cutest little beings they are.
