Ahhh...I see the screw-up fairy has visited us again... The Freedom you feel when riding has got to be the most dishonest emotion in the history of the planet - you are literally more restricted when riding than in any other mode of transportation. You have to be, otherwise you could lose an arm or a leg. Or end up in a wheelchair
Most people don't realize that statistically motorcycles are actually safer than cars in terms of accident percentages. A motorcycle is more agile than a car and should be able to, thus, avoid more of certain kinds of accidents than do cars. They can stop more quickly and can usually out accelerate most cars so it's no wonder they avoid certain kinds of accidents that cars cannot avoid. You are actually less restricted with a 360 degree visibility you can see mush more around, ahead as well as behind for potential problems.
Here's some statistics for you:
Table 1. Mortality due to risk in the United States
Risk category Fatality rate per 100 000 people ------------------------------------------------------------------- Motorcycling 2000 Aerial acrobatics 500 Smoking (all causes) 300 Parachuting 200 Smoking (cancer) 120 Firefighting 80 Hang gliding 80 Coal mining 63 Farming 36 Motor vehicle accident 24 Police work 22 Boating 5 Rodeo performer 3 Hunting 3 Fires 2.8 Marine accident 0.08 Aircraft accident 0.075 Floods 0.06 Lightning 0.05 Rail accident 0.051 Meteorite 0.000006 -------------------------------------------------------------------
Sources Mayo & Hollander 1991, p.53; Sabey & Taylor 1980.
Even with all the extra agility, motorcycles are about ten times as likely to kill their operator as cars. In fact, motorcycling is even more likely to result in death than smoking.
More dangerous than being a firefighter or a coal miner.
...
Of course, most guys who ride Harley's don't go all that fast. Their insurance premiums are cheap. They care more about looking like risk-takers than actually taking some real risks to have some serious fun.
Son, I was riding Harley's when you were still s h i t t i n g yellow.
Wanna race?
Or is all that experience good for nothing?
The reason he snickered is because he figured you were either drunk or just plain stupid,
So HA's don't hit drunk or stupid people? Cool, I'll pretend I'm drunk or stupid from now on any time I see one. It(according to you) will protect me.
yeah even the HA's have respect for stupid people and won't beat them up because they feel sorry for them, many poeple are just born stupid. If he thought you were a serious threat things would have went differently for if a member is truly disrespected he will defend his club or get his ass beat by his brothers. However I could arrange a meeting up there in Chico with you and the HA NOMADS chapter if you would like to back up what you say....?
I say yes. Send me an email. I don't block anyone.

Yeah but when a man rides a Harley he gets blown..... Girls won't suck your c-o-c-k just for a ride on a Suzuki!
Harley riders shell out 20 grand for it. Suzuki riders don't have to pay to get blown.

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 11/4/2007 1:50:13 PM | """"I have been to Sturgis... and not only harley riders go... bikers from across the US riding Honda's, Kawasaki's, BMW's, and MANY other brands... I don't find a harley rider any more "bad" than any other biker guy... JMO :)""""
Harley's have become the "really in fad" in the last 17 years. Just like Tatoos and Nascar. Back in the 70's and 80's the company was on some hard financial times, nearly bankrupt. But with new CEO and great marketing, people who never heard of Harleys now want one! Thats the great thing about America, if you wanna have some fun, do what everyone else thinks is fun! And get a tatoo and say you love NASCAR (even though today's NASCAR lovers never paid one bit of attention to it, until NASCAR paid big bucks for media time). I think it also goes along with the millionaire country music stars, who live in Hollywood! Yee Haw...any girls looking for a "real cowboy"? You know, one who ropes cows on the roundup for a job? Oh I'm sorry, big 4x4 'muddin' trucks and a guy with a Harley could be "real cowboy" today.
Any ladies interested in meditating for happiness, or walking, or helping the environment. At least Harley's help prevent global warming, so our kids will still have 7 continents to memorize when they grow up.

| whats with women and fashion? Posted: 11/5/2007 6:17:10 PM | donkeypimp-do you ride any bikes? just asking without wading back through the pages. i think most bikes are very hot looking, personally i dont ride one myself, but if i did it would be - perhaps not real fast now the men on the bikes ??????????????? | |

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/1/2007 12:33:18 PM | ok, i got tired of readin all the unrelated which is better, rice or real, i actually havent seen much response to the original question......
then i got to thinkin, maybe im in the wrong area, i cant ask that question, mine would be "why are th women put off by harleys", which i guess some DID answer here, "noisy and obnoxious" (happens to be why i like em i guess lol)
Seriously, i wish i could ask what the attraction is....i cant seem to find any women that are really into em (that are single anyways, i know a dozen or more that are married to fellow riders, both H-D and otherwise)

| whats with women and fashion? Posted: 12/1/2007 12:37:31 PM | Harleys are snob value. The guy with a 30 thousand dollar Harley pulls mor girls than a guy with a 30 thousand dollar ford. The guy with a three hundrd grand Ferrari pulls more girls than the guy with a thre hundred grand house.
Got the idea? | |
|
| whats with women and fashion? Posted: 12/1/2007 12:59:34 PM | what if i have 70k in harleys, 50k in truck (unless you count my 145k work truck lol) and a 200k home?
im far from a snob, trust me, born and raised a farm boy in the late 70s thru the 80's, and we weret the rich family farmers either, grew up on food stamps and welfare checks, and busted my ass to get where i am today.
if you take the time to know REAL harley guys and women, not the poser "my sportster gets 50 mpg and i got it 0 down lat week" types, youll find the vast majority are just as common folk as the next guy.
infact, i bet you'd be suprised some of the people in your town that ride and you dont even know it (both our county prosecutor and superior court judge ride with us quite frequently)

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/1/2007 1:32:33 PM | its in ur head. u obsess about that, and thats what u draw in
i'm not into bikes at all, bikers don't impress me. the car doesn't either, the person does. might sound cliche, but someone's harley ain't gonna give me an orgasm. i'm not gonna have a picture of their car or house plastered on the ceiling either, to turn me on.
not saying a successful man isn't appealing, a man has to show he is strong enough emotionally, physically and mentally to provide for a family, and we women look at that instinctively, but its not what he has but who he is that makes a diff, because if there is a clash between who he seems to be and who he really is, it still goes nowhere.
all those games r good for one night stands. for anything real, truth comes out. and thats where it counts. ive seen plenty weak men hide under tatooes and bikes, its an easy disguise, it does NOT make u a man if u dont feel u r one inside. therapy does!

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/1/2007 3:58:12 PM | I love the look..and the sound.. of harleys....no other motorbike in my oppinion matches their classic design. I grew up with motorbikes having fun as a child on minibike and trail bikes...then when i turned 40 ..my girlfriend and i hopped on the back of a harley and hooned over the harbour bridge and zoomed around the beaches..think we were both going thru a mid life crisis after our separation..but it was something we had wanted to do and it was fantastic with that wind racing thru our hair and that wonderful sense of freedom. Maybe a little heavier then other bikes..but a beautiful machine to see the sights and without a doubt..if i had the money..id buy a harley..beautiful. | |

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/1/2007 6:47:11 PM | where oh where- my ex is 5'2" and 98 lbs if ya roll her in molasses and gravel lol, i taught her on a little kawasaki 250 (rather drop a $500 bike than a $5000 bike) and after she mastered that we moved her up to a sportster 883. i went older (1987) for the softer ride and lower seat height, the newer sportys are alot shorter in length and a few inches taller (taller the bike the higher the weight, the harder to handle).
she did very well with that until she just couldnt balance anymore (progressive MS), and when she decided she liked another guy more we had been looking at a trike kit for that bike, which i might still do since i had a sweet image in my pea brain of how it'd look, and it more than doubles the resale on a sporty.
i have another guy that i do alot of work for who has a 2004 honda shadow that rides very nice, and sits low and long that'd be a great bike as well.
|
| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/1/2007 6:49:12 PM | BTW- stock exhaust on a harley is not loud, so i wouldnt let the noise discourage me there.
if youre looking for resale, there is no other bike really, just be careful with sportsters, H-D flooded the market and killed the value of them, not that they were really a hi-dollar bike to begin with.
|
| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/2/2007 4:39:32 PM | Thanks guys
It was suggested to me by a harley mechanic who also rides that the got uncomfortable on the longer rides. I also want something lightweight to start, right I am 48 after all..............
|
| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/2/2007 6:27:04 PM | my opinion a mid to late 80 sporty 883 or 1200 is gonna be a nicer ride on longer rides than the new ones, they shortened up the wheel base and stiffened up the shocks on the new sportys, but thats just me.
or like i said, that shadow this guy has is a plush suspension, sits low, and might actually be lighter than a sporty, but when it comes to resale, youll loose your ass, thats about the biggest draw back to a ricer really.

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/2/2007 6:47:05 PM | I would say that it is more of a generalization. Women and men alike, like riding bikes. Import or Domestic. As a person that builds American Vtwins, HD and alike, I would have to say that the "nostalgia" of riding is greater with the HD's and alikes. I say if you have to do it, go American. Everything else is imported. Then again, even HD puts their name on imported parts. Back to the thread: It has to be the vibration factor. As for the statistical data that was given. I havn't checked in a while, but the last time that I did any research on the subject, some odd years ago, that there were more fatal car crashes completed by senior citizens than drunk drivers country wide. But that is something that is never brought up in the media or otherwise. | |

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/25/2007 7:22:43 AM | Harley used to be about the ride. Now it's just another "Yuppie status symbol fashion show". I've had more than a few bikes in my life and just like women, they all rode differently. For me it's still all about the ride, if a woman doesn't like my ride.... it's the last time I will even talk to her. | |
|
| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/25/2007 7:28:16 AM | a harley is 3 things:
1-this strong, giant, steel, vibrating piece of machinery with a goal in between ur legs
2-a sense of freedom that a car cannot give u
3-the bad boy (even if he is a nerd on a bike, like my ex)
dude, rent a harley n u shall seeeeeee i wonder what a harley means to a man?

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/25/2007 8:37:00 AM | Momma:
Well to this man, a HD is what a motorcycle _should_ look like. Some of them blur the line between art and science. Would I buy one? Not unless I won the lottery, they are gorgeous, but not what I want in a daily driven motorcycle. Loud pipes drive me nuts. If I'm out for a ride enjoying being part of the scenery I don't want to hear an "infernal" combustion engine roaring or screaming by, this goes for any motorcycle. I don't need straight pipes to be loud and obnoxious, I can do that all by myself The sense freedom is available on any motorcycle, it's not exclusive to any brand. You can be a bad boy on a vespa, it's about you, not what you ride. And yes I have ridden several harleys, so the line of "if you've never ridden one" blah blah.. Just ride what YOU want to ride, and who cares what other people think?
|
| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/25/2007 8:59:26 AM | All the couples in my town ride together.. and Dad takes his little girls to Walmart for shopping together too... I love a man with a bike... when he says let's go for a ride... I forget the dishes in the sink.. the laundry in the dryer to be folded and just say Yes! Bikes don't just mean adventure.. a moment can just mean freedon... We girls want freedom too!!!!!!
So a man with a Harley says he enjoys being more free in his spirit... it says Hey I'm not boring, stick in the mud type.... and it's a declaration that he is looking for a free happy.. adventereous soul to share his life with... so most women say to themselves... Well I hate being bored or being boring .... I'll take a chance on fun.. and that is what's with women and Harleys!
|
| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/28/2007 7:49:54 AM | MommaSays asked "i wonder what a harley means to a man?"
I've been riding for 33 years and have owned everything from a Honda motor-cross bike to a Ninja to a FatBoy. Ultimately, it is the sense of freedom and adventure that is the huge attraction, but that can be achieved on any bike. I did a ride from Alberta to New Mexico on my Kawasaki Ninja in 1988. Being slumped over the gas tank for three weeks was not my idea of comfortable touring. With my Harley's, long-distance trips are far more comfortable, At double the weight of most "crotch rockets", they aren't the fastest bikes on the highways, but they are the Cadillac of motorcycles because the ride is smooth and those semi's coming toward you aren't going to blow you onto the side of the road.

| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/28/2007 12:16:31 PM | | I hate motorcycles, they are not my idea of fun and your hair can get messed up, I don't ride them and have no desire too I really hate to see a fat woman or a scrawny older one on a motorcycle very unattractive | |
|
| whats with women and harleys? Posted: 12/28/2007 1:31:33 PM | Well speaking for us old hags with our hair all messed up... I seem to see a lot of fellows with ladies who are not on the small side..... more like hamhocks for thighs... but they seem to go places the skinny .. need their hair always just so don't go!
As a scrawny older lady who enjoys a daytrip.. ending with a little rock no roll in the company of other free spirits.. I only wish I knew how to drive one myself....! But for now I'll stick to the surfboard and the kayak.. oh and an occasional fishing day!
And the occasional buddy who wants a scawny old lady pair of legs on the back of his bike....lol!
PS.. I rarely have seen a biker drink an alcoholic drink.. and if he did while I was with him.. there is a reason to carry money to get home...Safety First!
