| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/4/2008 7:37:13 PM | | My2, I didn't mean to be a smart aleck but I truthfully did not see the Toledo Zoo as being any better than the Detroit Zoo. I do remember a few years back the D Zoo farming out some animals in order to improve conditions. I know that a couple of years back that they re-opened some exhibits to great success. I really have to make a trip up there. I want to see that Polarbear exhibit. I love Polarbears. Especially love that Coca-cola Polar Bear. People used to buy me all kinds of Coca-cola Polar Bear stuff because I got such a kick out of him. | |

| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/5/2008 4:48:42 AM | | I don't know if its against the rules to post it....A good chance to see the Detroit zoo is August 23rd, theres a Memory Walk that day to support the Alzheimers cause. My family and I are walking. You could support a good cause and see the zoo at the same time. | |

| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/6/2008 2:43:54 PM | The zoo millage passed in all 3 counties. I'm pretty happy about that since I no longer live in Oakland County and therefore couldn't vote. If you haven't been to the zoo, you really should go. The polar bears and the kangaroo experience are pretty cool.
They removed the elephants a few years ago because the climate was too tough for them. They moved to a preserve in CA and were doing well. I believe one of them did pass away this year from old age.

| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/6/2008 4:15:31 PM | | As you know the Zoo has been saved..as well As Mrs Kilpatrick....don't these people learn? | |
|
| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/6/2008 5:28:42 PM | Curious minds want to know...what 'people'?
The voters have spoken, just like the ones that voted for bush last Presidential election. One would have thought 'those people' across the nation would have learned too!

| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/6/2008 9:50:24 PM | | Anyone see that jerk on tv the other night who was threatening to sue if the Zoo millage passed? He was carrying on something about the Headlee tax ammendment or something. Anyone know what he was babbling about? | |
|

| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/7/2008 9:33:00 PM | | I think it was on Channel 2. They were having people on the street commenting on the Zoo millage and this guy said that he would sue if it passed. He said it was an illegal vote. Had to do with the Headlee ammendment or something like that. I wasn't too clear on it that is why I was asking. | |

| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/8/2008 6:39:31 PM | If I read it right, voters can approve a new tax. Section 6 of the Headlee Amendment....
Except as otherwise provided in this constitution, the total amount of general ad valorem taxes imposed upon real and tangible personal property for all purposes in any one year shall not exceed 15 mills on each dollar of the assessed valuation of property as finally equalized. Under procedures provided by law, which shall guarantee the right of initiative, separate tax limitations for any county and for the townships and for school districts therein, the aggregate of which shall not exceed 18 mills on each dollar of such valuation, may be adopted and thereafter altered by the vote of a majority of the qualified electors of such county voting thereon, in lieu of the limitation hereinbefore established. These limitations may be increased to an aggregate of not to exceed 50 mills on each dollar of valuation, for a period of not to exceed 20 years at any one time, if approved by a majority of the electors, qualified under Section 6 of Article II of this constitution, voting on the question. (yes I read this kind of stuff )

| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/9/2008 6:01:44 AM | | Hehe...I hope that's in a good way. I didn't agree with the tax being put on the primary ballot where there's a traditionally low voter turnout. It should have been on the November ballot. | |

| Detroit Zoo possibly closing! Posted: 8/11/2008 5:06:53 PM | Glad to hear the Zoo will be saved.
My whole family use to go there every May 24 , have so many good memories of it. It has been 40 something years since I visited it, think I might just head across the river and go there this coming Saturday when I visit my home town Windsor.
Bet it has changed a lot over the years ! Is the "Snake House " still there? That was my sisters worse place, and my favorite, lol.
