| does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do? Posted: 6/28/2006 12:21:03 PM | Smoking is a huge turn off for me. I don't care how attractive a woman is, the moment she puts a cigarette to her lips it's over for me.
And before you smokers jump on me for this, I did try dating a woman that smoked. Her profile did not indicate she was a smoker and she went our first few dates without smoking and her clothes etc did not smell of smoke. But after that she started smoking around me etc and I could not handle that. The smell of smoke permeates a person no matter of they smnoke outside. Kissing them is like licking an ashtray. I cannot stand the smell of smoke or the taste of it......
I have chosen a healthy lifestyle for my self. I don't smoke, I workout, I eat well. I don't feel that I can be with someone who has chosen something so obviously unhealthy as smoking. Smoking kills you and makes people sick. That just doesn't fit in with my life style.
Smoking is not a simple difference that can be overlooked. It is not political opinions, sports team affiliations, stlye prefernce etc. It is a lifestyle choice. One that is not simple to overlook or work around. As hard as smoking is to stop, it is a rare person that would be able to make that change for you no matter how much they love you.
The sad thing is with each passing day we have more and more evidence of just how bad smoking is for you and the dangerous effects pf second hand smoke. Yet every day more and more kids start smoking, their already addicted parents allow it, and people that already are addicted continue on with their addictions and justify it by saying it is there right to smoke. Smoking is not a right, it is something that has been tolerated over the years. Luckily this tolerance is diminishing every day.
I hope very soon there will come a time when people are only allowed to smoke in the privacy or their own homes and their cars.

| does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do? Posted: 6/28/2006 12:21:09 PM | I'm a non smoker and my boyfriend USED to smoke. He smoked when I met him, but gave it up. Not just for me and our future, but for himself too. Has been smoke free (not cheated at all) for 2 months.
Basically I'm trying to say that the trends are changing and alot of smokers are becoming non smokers simply because smoking isn't considered "cool" anymore.

| does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do? Posted: 6/28/2006 12:31:38 PM | Smoking is soooooooooooooooooooooo far from cool. Smokers are actually becoming social pariahs now.
Just look at the drain smokers put on the medical community. if we minimize all of the smoking related health care that is needed in this country now we would free up so much medical resources that could be used for other things.
Smoking is legal for two reasons, tax revenue, and the tobacco industry has the most powerful lobbyists and makes huge donations to ploiticians. Anything other consumer product in this country that is even remotely responsible for s persons death or ill health is immediately banned. For some reason, smoking has not been held to this standard. Hopefully the tide is changing on this.
As I said, smoking is far from cool. Smokers are now looked at with the same eye that we look at others addicted to something that is bad for them. We know smoking is wildly addicting and so very hard to quit. I just don't understand why people don't try to quit. Whatever it takes, just do it. It is selfish to smoke, if your life means so little to you, then at least have enough human compassion to worry about those that love you........

sorry dont know how to do the fancy quote thing...
just a little fact tho on this..smokers in general have one serious trip to the hospital before kicking off. the healthy lifestyle person in general as 3 or 4 major visits, whos the bigger drain on the medical community?
OT: smoke dont smoke i dont care long as the person is a good person..ie doesnt kick puppies

| does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do? Posted: 6/28/2006 12:43:18 PM | Nope it doesn't bother me one bit.
It is a choice I made and still choose to make, is that being selfish?? I beg to differ on that one. My family everybody who knows me realize I'm a smoker, it won't be some big huge shock if I get cancer, if it is they need a brain scan.
If I"m out and others don't smoke I will walk away from them when lighting up and try my best to make sure its not offending anyone at least on purpose.. The only time I get an attitude is if I"m in a parking lot or standing on the sidewalk away from the doors of a store having one and somebody who HAS the choice of walking further down before getting on sidewalk chooses that where I'm standing is the place for them. They usually will end up saying some comment about the smoke getting in thier face, well I will bite back if you go out of your way and looking for a reason to get on me.
Besides that the ones who sue because a family member dies are a waste of my time also.

Smokers get cancer, emphysema and a hwole host of cardio-pulmonary diseases that require both hospitalization and frequent medical care. If in fact smokers have fewer major hospital visits (which I doubt the veracity of your statement) it is simply because their life is cut short and the do not get to the typical very old age hospital visits that nonsmokers would have at the end of their LONG life. There is more to medical care and cost than hospital stays.
Smoking is so selfish......go ahead kill yourself. What does that say about the care you have for the people in your life that love you.

Posted: 6/28/2006 3:24:17 PM | WASHINGTON - Breathing any amount of someone else's tobacco smoke harms nonsmokers, the surgeon general declared Tuesday _ a strong condemnation of secondhand smoke that is sure to fuel nationwide efforts to ban smoking in public.
"The debate is over. The science is clear: Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance, but a serious health hazard," said U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona.
The report calls for completely smoke-free buildings and public places, saying that separate smoking sections and ventilation systems don't fully protect nonsmokers. Seventeen states and more than 400 towns, cities and counties have passed strong no-smoking laws.
But public smoking bans don't reach inside private homes, where just over one in five children breathes their parents' smoke _ and youngsters' still developing bodies are especially vulnerable. Secondhand smoke puts children at risk of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, as well as bronchitis, pneumonia, worsening asthma attacks, poor lung growth and ear infections, the report found.

Carmona implored parents who can't kick the habit to smoke outdoors, never in a house or car with a child. Opening a window to let the smoke out won't protect them.
"Stay away from smokers," he urged everyone else.
Even a few minutes around drifting smoke is enough to spark an asthma attack, make blood more prone to clot, damage heart arteries and begin the kind of cell damage that over time can lead to cancer, he said.
AND YOU SMOKE WHY? | |

| does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do? Posted: 6/29/2006 1:25:57 AM | Lets see, A smoker pays more in taxes, for low income people to have ins. They do not live as long, so soc.sec. has more money, and state employees that die young leaves more retirement money in the coffers. Any time someone in politics wants more money for anything, they yell, lets tax the smokers. So I personally do not want to hear the drain on the community. If we all stopped smoking where would the money for those resources come from?
Personally I think smoking is a nasty dirty habit, but we pay our price, and you don't.
To the OP, yes I would date a smoker, cause she would have no more faults then me. Would I date a non-smoker? Probably not, no more then I would date someone doing drugs. We are all here to find someone that fits, and if they do not fit, then move on.

But as long as they smoke not in the area or space as i am in it is alittle easier. If they go spoke outside where i am not that is ok. But not in the same car as me or within 20 feet of me especially in an enclosed space.

| does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do? Posted: 6/29/2006 4:10:28 PM | I can't stand it. My ex smoked and she was "trying to quit" since before we got together...6 years ago, she's still smoking. It didn't bother me before because my Dad's a smoker, but it's a total turnoff for me now, I can't stand that "oh, I'm almost out of cigarettes, have to go to the store and get more" or worse the tantrums when they've run out and haven't had time to get to the store to get more - they're forever living around how many they've got left.
She was always asking me to pick them up for her, I would forget because as a non-smoker, it never crossed my mind to pick them up. After a while, she would ask me and I would just flat out refuse...I'm not catering to anyone else's habits again. I don't encourage my friends habits by picking up cigarettes for them, I don't even do it for my Dad and I certainly wouldn't do it for a girlfriend. I can't stand the prison of someone else's addiction. I don't have any addictions and I don't see why I should put myself through that kind of pain for anyone else.
As for the comment at the top of the page about us being you're friend when we're stuck in the woods and needing your lighter...don't go in the woods without a lighter if you can't start a fire without one. You were never in the boyscouts, huh?

Mind you with that said, I'll date someone who smokes only if they can respect the fact that I don't like it and try not to inconvenience me.
It's the people that don't give a crap if they smoke in your face that really get my goat! To me it says a lot about them as a person.

IE: floral perfumes.
BTW: A new law is likely to be passed in Canada making it illegal to wear perfume in a public place. Apparently those that are allergic to it or are sensitive have a toxic reaction to it. 2nd hand perfumes are on the way out.......so, any hypocrites here wanting to speak out against this? I can't wait to hear it.

So, have they, or are they, banning smoking in all public places as well? If not this is the ultimate act of hypocracy. There is far more scientific proof of the dangers of second hand smoke than anything to do with perfume. Perfume may give you a headache when you are around someone, but I doubt there are any long term health effects from it.
My vote is for a total smoking ban in all except private residences and single occupant vehicles.

| does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do? Posted: 7/2/2006 7:02:47 AM | I absolutely HATE it!!! I met a guy yesterday, had a nice lunch, conversation went well and then he whipped out a cigarette!!! YUCK!!! Then he asked me for a second date, and I told him that I don't date smokers. He was pissed off and visibally hurt but that is my perogative.
Smoking id definitely a "dealbreaker" with me, I don't care how cute or nice or whatever he is .....NO SMOKERS!!!! I DO NOT WANT TO KISS AN ASHTRAY!!!!

I felt it was not my place to change him. If he liked to smoke, so be it! But I just couldn't stay in the relationship for that and other reasons as well. I will never date a smoker again. That cured me once and for all. I guess he was the lesson I needed to learn about me at that time. I really miss him, but not the smoking.......no way!

Perhaps we are at the beginning of learning about the affects of 2nd hand perfume inhaling and don't yet know all the dangers of it. Scientist do know that some people suffer toxic like reactions to it and it does cause breathing disorders. Perhaps you aren't as sensitive to the scent of perfumes as others but who are you to judge the level of their suffering? The ban of 2nd hand perfuming will be inacted, ironically, sooner than the banning of public smoking.
But yeah, if you don't enjoy a smoker don't date! I'm sure that if you express your displeasure when I whip out a cigarette I'll be okay with it - but know this, I'm NOT picking up the tab for dinner, in fact, I'm inclined to drive off on my own to spite you since you're so shallow. I'll be gracious enough to point out the bus stop for you....I hope for your sake it's not raining and you've brought an umbrella.

| does anyone get as turned off with a smoker as i do? Posted: 7/2/2006 7:35:14 AM | | I didn't smoke until I was 35.I started because I wanted to be thinner. Although, as I look back, I was already skinny. Before that, I did not gripe to people about smoking. I guess it's because my mom didn't smoke but my dad did,and mom never said anything about it.I married a smoker the first time when I didn't smoke and I just looked at it as normal and it didn't bother me. Of course at the time a lot of people were smoking, just about everyone I knew. I am 54. The second time around, I married a non-smoker when I was smoking. He never said anything about my smoking. When I got pregnant, I quit smoking for 5 years. I started again when my 20 year old(he didnt live with me) became terminally ill because I was so upset. Then I stopped smoking after he died. I gained a lot of weight. So after 4 years, I started smoking again to lose weight and it is working. I wish I did not smoke but I dont want to gain weight again. After I lose it all, I will probably quit again with acupuncture or something. I don't blame people for not dating a smoker. It is up to them. If they date a smoker, they could start haveing feelings for them, and then they are stuck with a smoker. I would rather someone not go out with me because I smoke, then gripe to me about it. Because I would take it that they are a control freak. I wish I didn't smoke, but that is where I am today. | |
