Yep, I'm an old phart and I was a heavy smoker for 37 years. I tried and tried to quit, but the tied up gut and nervousness would do me in usually in a day or two. I was smoking two to three packs a day, and it seemed like everytime I tried to quit, I would smoke more. I'd go out on a fishing trip and bring a carton of cigarettes with me in case the boat broke down......it was that bad. I finally made up my mind 18 1/2 years ago to try again and what worked for me was I only quit for an hour at a time. Whenever I would get that gut wrenching urge for a cigarette, I would promise myself that if I still wanted one that bad in an hour, I would have one. I even carried an open pack in my pocket, upside down so I wouldn't grab one without thinking, and it seemed that by the time an hour had passed, the strong urge had also passed. Sure, it would come back, but that was the start of another hour. This went on for several days, and the urges became less intense and less frequent, untill after a couple of months, I had no desire for one anymore. When I would see someone with a cigarette, I would make a big deal(to myself) about how stupid they look. I finally got to the point where I couldn't stand the nasty smell of one either, which I thought was a great smell before I quit. I do have a touch of lung damage from all the years of smoking, but I don't get up in the morning hacking and coughing and spitting yellow phlegm. I honestly think a lot of smokers are afraid to try to stop. I know I was. The patches will still give you nicotene, so if you quit using them, you are still addicted and will be right back to smoking. It is a terrible addiction. Many say it is worse than trying to quit hard drugs. Just remember, death by emphysema is a horrible way to go and that "Cancer Cures Smoking". Try it the way I did if nothing else has worked for you and you truly want to quit. I hope you are as successful as I was.

Oh geez don't smoke, but let some stumbling drunk paw all over you. Beer, wine, etc stinks just as bad as cigarettes to someone who doesn't drink. Especially in the mornings. Then it's time to hit the bathroom and gag.

This strident anti-smoking campaign really picked up steam when Bill Clinton became president.

Clinton tried to deter smoking by demonstrating other uses for cigars.

Okay...maybe he was just trying to turn us off of it.

The sight of diseased lungs never bothered me but the thought of Monica's vagina...
..now that's a turn off. *gag* *cough* *gag*

Oh my goodness, I absolutely hate to smell the breath of someone who smokes. I met someone online and he smoked. The smell bothered me when I would visit him, but it wasnt until I married him, and he made everything in my house smell like cigarettes, that it really got on my nerves. Even MY clothes smelled bad. It got so bad that I hated to kiss him. He smoked at least 2 packs a day, and didnt care how he got the money. He would spend the electric bill if he had to just to smoke.. I finally told him that I couldnt take it anymore, that it was either me or the cigarettes, (He Chose The Cigarettes!)

I used to be a smoker myself. I finally decided to quit for good when smoking seemed to control everything I did. My choice of restaurant would be based on whether or not there was a smoking section. My choice of activity would be based on how and when I would be able to smoke.

I watched my dad die from smoking and as a previous poster said, seeing someone gasping for breath who has emphasyma from smoking is horrifying.

Now when I see people smoking it makes me think how stupid they look (even though I was one of them once). I hate the smell and would never think of allowing someone to smoke inside my home now.

I don't think I would date a smoker for several reasons. 1. I don't like the smell, 2. I would have less respect for their poor choices that affect their health, 3. I don't ever want to be tempted to put my foot on that very slippery slope again by having cigarettes anywhere near me.

SkyDad - Excellant post. I would just like to add sometning. I live in L.A., and I have a 62 year old lady friend living alone in Las Vegas. For the longest time I have known her she smokes a carton a day! Not a pack but a carton. She can walk about a block down the street before the emphysema kicks in, and of course she carries an oxygen bottle wherever she goes. But she still will not quit smoking. Sad but true. I give her another year to live, all because of cigarettes. Her doctors tell her if she would quit smoking now it may give her an extra six months or so of life, but no, no way will she quit!

Come on. seekone! A carton a day? And emphysema doesn't "kick in," you either have it or you don't. And if I were you folks living in L.A., worrying about people smoking cigarettes would be the least of my concerns.

When I said a carton a day I meant it. I have known this woman long enough to feel confident in saying so. (I did not post all the details). My choice of words re emphysema was perhaps not exactly grammatically correct. I guess you could simply call it an observation when she tries to walk over one block at a time. Yes, she has emphysema and she lives with it. Sometimes it is worse than others, just my choice of words. And yes we have a lot of problems out here in California, but I would not trade where I am living for anything. Even though we record over 100 earthquakes a day, of which you cant feel them, but they do register at CalTech. So, just my opinion and sorry for my choice of words re my friend.
I remember visiting Kentucky when I was a kid, Mammoth Cave and the like. You have a beautiful State and I admire your people.

and what does it make men??

Weak.

I cannot smoke as I am allergic to tobacco and the smoke it produces. I am allergic to everything and if I don't treat it, I can literally get sicker than with a cold ending up in bed for two days. I used to hate back when I was a kid sitting in a doctor's office sick and having some inconsiderate @sshole smoking in the waiting room knowing good and well the smoke was drifting right over to me and not give a sh*t.

Luckily with new smoking laws, us non-smokers are no longer forced to inhale an even worse smoke than if they smoked (unfiltered smoke). It was pretty rude in hind sight.

Luckily I now use a nasal spray called NasacortAQ and it has changed my life.

Thing is, I WILL date a smoker because I know it is another habit/addiction and do not hold it against them at all. Smokers are just as good of people and I wouldn't want to miss my Love because I was quick to judge. So my rule has always been it doesn't matter. I would hope, however, that they had plans on quitting because it is not healthy PERIOD. It destroys lungs, constricts blood vessels, and causes blood to clot too quickly. This may not create a problem early in life, but in the later years look out.

But going back to an earlier post of mine. I hate when they think it is "cool" and "sexy" when they smoke because it is not. If they just smoke, I can live with that.

My 2,002 cents.

I am allergic to smoke (sneeze, eyes water, cough, nose burns and runs). Not very sexy :( But I have run into some men that have smoke fetish. Interesting but not my thing.

My husband moved away months ago, separated is not married
unless all you care about is a piece of paper.

this may be true, but u can't get re-married until u are DIVORCED!! And, why didn't u call him your 'ex' husband if it's all about a piece of paper. Back on topic...non-smokers, yeah we hear ya! Smokers are killing u with their second-hand smoke...blah blah blah. Well, apparently everything we put into our mouths these days is causing Cancer, perhaps none of us should eat anymore either.

Oh, ok then since other things cause cancer, ok...you have justified your case.

You dodged the second hand smoking issue by bringing up other things that cause cancer so I guess if all those other things cause cancer, why not throw something else into the mix?

I mean hell, why workout, eat healthy, take care of myself? I might get run over by a bus tomorrow.

Silly logic. Why do I need to smell and inhale all your smoke? Next time I drink, I will become extra annoying, blowing my smelly alcohol breath into everyone's face, burping beer, smelling the room up with beer breath and burps, bumping into people, being obnoxious. Isn't that kind of the same thing?

I don't need to be a PART of YOUR habit. It's YOUR habit. Not mine.

And like I said, I will date either. Just be a little considerate about it. If you are sitting at the bar and your trail of smoke is going straight into someone's face, by all means, move the ashtray. There is a novel idea. Maybe we should post a sign on each bar to let smokers know they CAN move an ashtray.

I mean is it any different to spill my drink on the guy/gal next to me?

excuse me..it's not MY habit--I DON'T SMOKE!

I'm just saying all these non-smokers who think that they are better than smokers, yet there are numerous other things in this world that are carcinogens (sp?), but I don't see them yelling up a storm about exhaust fumes, pollutents in the air, etc etc...it's just that smokers are the easiest targets and it's not fair to blame only them.

^^^Ok fair enough. And yes I do agree with you on the fact of all the other carcinogens. Even now they have discovered microwaving in plastic pulls chemicals out of the plastic. I can see this because never until now have we heated in plastic.

Sorry if I got harsh. I guess I am a little oversensitive to the topic. You have remained level headed on this debate here and that is great on you. I expected a much worse retaliation and you side stepped it

Very classy!

Also and while I agree with smoke free stores, offices, etc. I still believe any bar should allow smoking because where there is drinking there should be smoking allowed. I believe it is the BAR'S responsibility to put a smoke ventilation system into place and that should be the law pushed for those establishments. It's not that tough and I think each establishment should be forced to put one in. They are already making money hand over fist on their drinks. Peace.

Sure there are numerous other carcinogens in our world besides cigarette smoke. The difference is smoking is optional. As much as we would like to think otherwise, driving is not optional. And there are laws regulating the exhaust from cars. My State has mandatory testing of exhaust from cars.

No matter how many other potentially harmful things you pull into this discusssion the fact remains that smoking is optional, dangerous to your health, and more importanntly, dangerous to those around you that have chosen not to smoke. The worst part of it is the unfiltered smoke we are forced to breathe is worse than the filtered smoke that smokers suck into their lungs. Discussing other carcinogens in this thread does not negate how bad this habit is for those that indulge and those that are unfortunate enough to be exposed to it.

It is my sincere hope that smoking is completely outlawed in my life time. Will that happen? Of course not, the Government makes way too much money on this filthy habit for that to ever happen. It is always funny to me when a consumer product is suspected to endanger or cause death in as few as ten people the Government acts quickly and pulls it from the shelf. Yet smoking, that has proven to cause illness and death in those that use it and are exposed to it is allowed to continue to be sold. Money talks, especially to our Government.

Wake up smokers! You are killing yourself and those around you. If you want to be selfish and kill yourself, that is fine with me. Just don't expose the rest of us to your foul and dangerous habit. Smoking is not a right!

what do u mean driving is not optional? of course it is...it is not a law that you HAVE to drive. yes, smoking is optional, it is anyone's RIGHT to chose to smoke or not. smokers KNOW the health risks, why does everyone act like people who smoke do not know the effects, both short and long term? They know what they are, they CHOSE to smoke, as is their RIGHT!!

And, regulating exhaust from cars...big WHOOP! In this day and age, they have proven they can run cars without the use of gasoline, so why hasn't production of cars with gas engines ceased? not drive a car, ...it's not optional...puullleeeaze!

In this society, in this day and age, driving a car or some type of motorized vehicle is necessary. It is a fact of life. We have to get to our jobs and everything else we do. I do not have space for horses at my house.

Sure, there are vehicles that can run without gasoline, but at this point the are econimically feasable.

No matter what arguments you make regarding other potentially harmful things in our world, the fact remains that smoking is optional, and a vile and nasty habit that needs to be outlawed.

Smoking is not a right! You can smoke all you want and kill yourslef. But you do not have the RIGHT to endanger those around you when you indulge in your self destructive habit.

Face it, no matter how hard you try, you cannot justify your smoking habit. No matter how many other harmful, or potentially harmful things you bring it. none of them negate the fact that smoking is a huge health hazard and a huge drain on the Healthcare System.

i don't have to justify anything---if u read my post, u'd see I DON'T SMOKE!! Get off that high horse of yours and stop being so judgemental of others. Alcohol should be outlawed too, for that matter. Would put an end to senseless drinking and driving casualties wouldn't it? And, the healthcare system is being drained by many other things, not just smoking...holy crap! Smokers are the evil of the world, they get it! hear that all u smokers? YOU are the reason for our poor healthcare system, you are polluting our air, you are.....

Since all the non-smokers are so rude and uprising in abound. From now on, before you walk into a restaurant or a clothing store, or a hardware store or anywhere. Ask if there are employees that smoke, if the answer is yes, then refuse to shop there.
If your going to go that extra mile to make us smokers feel like crap, then you might as well hurt our pocket books also. Mind you some businesses hire non-smokers to work with smokers. Oh gawd who thought of that.
We have choices we make each day. I for one, live my life with a smoke in hand, while some don't I don't think anything bad of them, I don't think bad of those who drink and drive, or the homeless.
This topic is about being turned off of a smoker -- so stay away from us, no matter what your doing or where you are. A smoker is beside u on the highway, you turn onto the shoulder until he is far away from you. A smoker is driving a bus, you wait for the next one. A smoker is delivering your baby, you ask for another doctor. An ambulance driver is about to perform CPR on you -- you stop him and ask for another one.
