^ Agreed. If they don't drive that's a-okay. But just as long as they have a driving license. We're cool.

This is an interesting thread and I think it well shows the silly perceptions our society imposes on people. Honestly, If I said I would not date woman that could not cook I would howled down for being chavinist and the very imbodiment of male evil. I guess each of us must have our own demands. I recently viewed a profile in my area where she wanted a man 41 to 44 making between $50K and $80K, over 6 foot tall with a full head of black hair and never married and no kids whatsoever, ohh and he had to drive a sports car. Talk about limiting your options! Keep an open mind people the world is filled with an amazing variety of human beings you may be pleasantly surprised by that which you find!

Hey fraserdw, I respect your opinion yet I want to ask you something. You refer to limiting one's options. I see in your profile your list of restrictions. I see you're not interested in women who smoke. Isn't THAT limiting your options? Don't you think that there could be an amazing variety of women who smoke that would pleasantly surprise you? So what's the difference between you not wanting to get involved with a smoker and me not wanting to get involved with a man in his 30s who doesn't drive?

Hmmmmmm after reading some of these posts i cant help but feel a little offended.
I currently pay rent, school loans, phone bill, grocery bill and a gym membership every month. i dont have a car and im about two weeks away from getting my G2. I was doing my taxes and i only made about 15,000 last year.....so needless to say a car is out of the question. So i guess by some of the posts in this thread, a relationship seems out of the question too.
Personally i dont see what having a car or lisence has to do with falling in love or meeting someone great. Yes i feel shitty when a girl takes the bus to see me, but thats why i go out of my way to see her instead.
Not everyone was brought up under the same circumstances as others. and i think its stupid to place so much emphasis on such a silly litle detail.
and as for the one post where someone said that if they were sick and the buses stopped running so their bf/gf couldnt see them?.........well theres always a way. walk, cab, bike. unless its long distance nothing should stop you from being with the person you love.
Thanks =)

adrenaline_rush,

You're obviously working hard to make a good future for yourself and that's admirable and commendable. That's more than a lot of 21 yr olds do. I think a lot of us were referring to those who are much older (like in their 30s) who have no car/license. So don't feel bad :)

Yup yup...what she said.

And I never said it was a deal breaker....for instance if he was like you...and would go through all of that to visit..that'd be great...but again...don't wanna have to drive a person everywhere they want to go. My brother is a 40 yr old with no lic due to dui (he's a dumbass) and I hate being anywhere near him cuz it's always.."Hey give me a ride to...."
Meh...no way!

hmmmmmm, well then i guess it depends on the person. personally i hate cars....but i hate not having one more. its a little insecurity i have, so i do well in every other catagory to make up for it. as for driving someone around.......you really shouldnt have to do that. your not his mother.

I agree with everyone here after reading every single post. I have dated guys who didn't drive, who did, who had a license but no car, to who had no license but had a car but couldn't drive it. Which were a turn off? I would go with the ones who has a license, maybe can't afford to get a car, but if I wanted to see him it was always I who had to pick him up if we were gonna go out, or wanted to hang out at my place. Another turn off is when they want to see me but would always ask or tell me to pick them up. Yeah, I"m no free ride all the time, get a cab sometime to get to my place or get on a bus. Those guys r annoying to me. The biggest turn on for me is when we both have licenses, both have cars, but we share the driving by one time I picking him up and the other time him picking me up.

I don't see why it's a huge deal unless the guy has a DUI record or something. Some people just get around via public transportation and never got around to learning. I know lots of adults that don't drive.

Learning to drive can be tricky. I think a lot of people forget what it's like when you're learning to drive. It's not like riding a bike. In fact, it's a lot easier to get killed or injured. It's also expensive to own a car. I always worry about getting into an accident when I drive. I can never relax behind the wheel. When someone else is driving I'm usually as relaxed as can be unless the roads are bad or I'm running late for something. But when I'm behind the wheel, I don't even like having music on. I have to concentrate. Both hands on the steering wheel. I'm not one of those one-handed drivers that hangs his other arm out of the window. I don't know how people do that.

The only reason I learned to drive was to eliminate the stigma. Explaining it to people got old. I got tired of people bugging me about it.

I'll only drive when I have to. When I'm commuting to and from work, I usually take the bus or carpool. And I NEVER drive when the roads are bad. It's not worth it imo.

I learned later in life (hey, us Gen Xers are late bloomers). I would have learned sooner, but for a long time it was something I was able to get around. When you live in a big city like mine, public transportation is available. My parents had a lot of trouble with cars and not a lot of money. We went through long periods of time where we just didn't have a car. Mom and dad would take the bus or bum rides from people. Luckily my mom had some neighbors as co-workers for a while. And when we did get cars, they were usually used, and we'd have problems with them breaking down and such. I didn't even start thinking about driving until I was in my 20's. . My high school didn't even have a driver's ed program. As for getting friends to teach me, well for one, few of the buddies I had owned cars or licenses, and I didn't even want to think about asking to drive their cars.

I suppose it depends on where you live. If I lived out in the sticks, I'm sure I would have learned much sooner.

Susan Sontag never drove. :) And hey, it helps cut down on pollution.

Funny though how we don't hold this against women. :D

Whatever, some people simply can not afford it at some period of their lives or do not know whether they will be able to stay at this continent at all. There are a lot of reason and ways around. Personally I do not mind using a public transport, not that I have any other choice anyway :). I agree vehicle solves a lot of problems and a very useful thing to have around but common people. Imagine if the guy drives on the bus across the city just to bring you these flowers in order to see the smile on your face. How about such a romantic twist to it :). Anyway take it easy on those guys it's just another convenience that they will get in time.

I prefer to be driven. I'm more relaxed and productive, one less thing to worry about.

Most of the replies infer the negative, that a person does not drive for financial or legal reasons.

There are a number of valid reasons why a person does not drive. The ability to afford a car and driver is one.

I can't drive since I'm so nearsighted I can barely cross the street safely. If that's a turn off thats just too bad - I'd rather go out with a woman of character.

So what's the difference between you not wanting to get involved with a smoker and me not wanting to get involved with a man in his 30s who doesn't drive?

No offense but I will show you quite obvious and simple difference:

The women, who smokes, jeopardizes the future of her own health, the health of her partner and the health of the potential descendants. I think it is quite natural to question the need of women who has no respect for her own health and the health of those who are around her because we all intelligent enough and know about the threats of the second smoke.

On the other hand the guy who does not have a car simply can not afford it in most of the cases. You see it's all about options we have at the moment and choices we make for ourselves and for those we love. And trust me the guy who has no car will get it in few years as for quitting smoking I don't even want to get involved in this discussion, haven’t seen a single girl who was tough enough to quit.

Cheers and have a nice day

Charming guy you made some great points....smoking can NO way be compared to driving when it comes to preferences in a partner. Your point about a guy will eventually get a car but you've never seen a woman tough enough to quit??? THAT was a little harsh...smoking after all is an addiction....i have recently quit after 7 attempts..it isn't easy...BUT it does require the WILL to give up which is what some people don't have.

and.......to some of the other posts....
I don't drive and don't expect a man to either..but i think any 'person' (male OR female)that 'expects' another to drive them everywhere needs to have a long talk with themselves...there is NOTHING wrong with people who do not drive...do you not consider pollution????? Other priorities..finances etc etc...and what's the point in paying for a licence if you can't afford a car??? And as for stigma attached to non drivers???? And those women who want a man to pick them up and take them home???? What year is this??????? have you never heard of taxis???

...dazed and extremely confused.

Omg.

I still believe that my way, in my particuliar location, is the best.

1) At the end of the day, I do not have to spend time to find a parking spot.
2) I go somewhere downtown, am there right away and do not spend an hours cursing about parking.
3) I think I do my share reducing polution
4) The money I save (tons)..I use it to go south once year and on other stuff.
5) If I need to go far away, I rent a vehicule adapted to the situation or weather..which is best for my activity. A 4X4 when going north, a minivan for groups, or a classier car when going out.

Of course if you live somewhere remote where the only stimulation is to look at the cows getting fat and the only entertainement is the local john deer drinking pool 10 miles aways, yes i can understand that a vehicule is a must...other then that; it's just plain shallow.

Well I've dated guys who don't have a licence, dated one's with licences but without vehicles and guys with vehicles.

I *prefer* someone with a licence and a vehicle since I have both and then there can be an even give-and-take in regards to doing the driving.

But, if a man was willing to make the effort to see me and not expect me to be his taxi - I'd have no problem dating someone without a licence or vehicle.

licence..........check

wheels.......not checked

never been a problem for me before!

too each their own!

but I don't think it's shallow at all

anyone I talk to, I say immediately, I currently don't have wheels!

If I won't date a BBW, some woman won't date me because I've no wheels!

So now driving is shallow??

How about the fact that many people need to get to work?? I work in a city 45 kilometers away from where I live, bus is not an option.

And I will tell you this, at 50 years old, I am not about to start taking public transportation.

I love the convenience of driving.

That's a gooder, hey puppyluv? How can wanting/having a means to get around and live your life be deemed as shallow? It's a means of transportation for crying out loud.
