| New Zealand Posted: 4/3/2006 5:29:47 PM | I have been to the kiwi country place where they do the packing and sorting in N.Z.
Was a few years ago - there used to be a little tour cart that took you around the place
Not sure if it still exists or not?
Also went to Waitomo caves but was ill the whole day - can't remember much about it - I have seen more of it on television than I remember seeing there that day

| New Zealand Posted: 4/4/2006 5:46:26 PM | I'm a New Zealander - came to this part of the forums because I lived in Melbourne for a while, so happy Australasia finally has representation! It's not just Canadians who call the fruit Kiwi, pretty much the whole rest of the world does. I once came across a supermarket sign advertising the price of "Aussie-style" Kiwi, and when I asked one of the staff what the sign was referring to exactly, he had no answer. Most North Americans don't know about the bird. | |

| New Zealand Posted: 4/4/2006 11:01:45 PM | ^^ Thats where I was on about earlier in the thread Tepuke
Not sure if it is still there or not will have to find out
We spent half a day there looking around the place & went on the tour
Other things we liked to do too..
I liked the Agradome as well I have a video of my son feeding the lambs at the show they do there with a bottle he was about 7 or 8 then - when we went back to N.Z. the second time he got chosen again to do it.
There are a lot of small things he loved like that about N.Z. and The Mount hotpools (they still about?) at the bottom of Mt Manganui - spent lots of time over there too
Also the ostrich and emu farm was a good afternoon out - my son still has the emu eggs in his room - we had them sent them back in the post (he forgot it in the hotel) and they stayed intact despite the journey

| New Zealand Posted: 4/5/2006 2:49:28 AM | The big fact is that some regions pulled their vines, and Te Puke has not moved as far as I know. I have a relative in the "Kiwifruit" industry there.
Also I spent a period of my life, training and pruning "kiwifruit". And writing articles published in Horticulture journals on kiwifruit, only that was in 1990 to 1993.
Then there was a member on this site, who has since removed their profile, who had a screen name that had the word "kiwi" in it. However she was from North America and said she named herself after a 'kiwi", after unpacking her groceries that day, she signed up to join this site. She had no idea what the NZ national symbol of a kiwi bird was.
The kiwifruit being so named after the Hayward variety of Chinese Gooseberry. Which became a commercial mistake, when the original fruit was being, and is, misrepresented on the world market.
These days I am most likely out of touch and I will admit it. Maybe that is why 95% of my on line contact is with Canadians (or New Zealanders living in Canada) - all because most of them, I've met in ways of contact on this site.
It sort of puts my NZ into prospective, the country that leads the world into each day. The first to get the sunrise of all the world.

My mother is from Christchurch, NZ (the south island). Almost all of my mother's family lives in NZ somewhere. I'm hoping to go bakc within the next couple of years. It is a beautiful place. I have nothing but fond memories of it.

| New Zealand Posted: 6/27/2007 8:52:59 AM | I think Russel Crowe said it all once:
"God Bless New Zealand and Thank God for Australia!"
Sounds pretty good to me and certainly epitomises the two great nations of the South Pacific.
