I'm told New Zealand is OK, but I've always wondered about Old Zealand....Where the hell is it?

There is no 'Old Zealand' New Zealand is named after the Netherlands province of Zeeland. The dutch explorer Abel Janzoon Tasman was the first european to discovered the country in 1642, and originally named it Staten Landt believeing it to be a group of islands located off the Argentinian coast line. When they realized later that it wasn't this land mass dutch authorities renamed the country Nieuw Zeeland in honor of their seafaring province. Then later when british explorer Captain James Cook reached the country in 1769 to further explore and map the coast line, he kept the name but anglicized it to New Zealand or as the Maori know it Aotearoa 'land of the long white cloud' but at the end of the day whatever it's known as it's one great little country!

Its a brilliant little pad! Spent 4 weeks there, 3 on south island which was amazing. Started end of May so we had 2 weeks of stunning weather, then a week of slowly building snow ........... stunning!!! My profile pic is actually standing outside Hamner Springs. Its amazing how its so much like Australia ... yet so completely different. Definately going back and spending more time on the South Island.

Wow I'm a kiwi but I've never heard of old Zealand. Cool. I've got my tiki and my paua shell and an all blacks vest, been here in Oz 10 years now, but still reminisce of "the old home" sometimes.

I'm a Kiwi boy from Southland. Been in Oz 21 years now and consider myself basically Aussie.
'Cept for the All Blacks. They're in my blood.
