I am a Yankee and have lived and been to many places in the south for 20 years.
What to watch out for is Southern women who make it a point to tell you how southern they are. Especially if she says she is a Georgia Peach, and if she has a slow southern accent and uses the word Darling, Run LIKE HELL. She's out for something and its not you. Most guys from the south would substantiate this. A fast talking southern accent means she is a Red Neck and is most interrested in Truck Drivers.
Sorry, but contrary to popular belief, after 20 years in the south from the east coast to Mississippi, most women that are true southern bells and sweethearts, have very little southern accents these days. Atleast not very noticable. (perhaps a few cute words here and there, like fixen to get dinner, etc.) In my opinion, the world Class of southern bells and true sweethearts are in the Carolinas, North and south. James Taylor will tell you!

I think the word Yaw means according to the American hereitage dictionary: 1. Nautical To swerve off course momentarily or temporarily: The ship yawed as the heavy wave struck abeam.
2. To turn about the vertical axis. Used of an aircraft, spacecraft, or projectile.
3. To move unsteadily; weave.
Now the word Ya'll:
Slang contraction for the 2nd person plural pronoun, utilized amongst the indigenous populations of the southern continental United States.

As far as putting down people who live in the country I think is egotistical and self-centered. I doubt that country people live like wolves. However, if you take more pleassure staring at street lights, rather than a star lite sky, and brething air pollution rather than fresh air, hearing police sirens rather than the peacefull sound of crickets, or birds. Being carefull that your purse isn't stolen or a high crime rate, rather than the sound of an owl or friendly neighbors; that is you business. However, to me, I prefer to live in the country rather than a savage concrete jungle. | |

Southern accents sound awful and undignified.
Well, possibly to the ear of one person, yes. The sound referred to by most Americans as the southern drawl comes from the English west country and is an imported sound, much like the African rhythms we made into jazz, blues and soul also in the south.
The book to reference on the gensis of this accent is "Albion's Seed", which is a scholarly work on the four (4) transplanted British cultures in America. It's a thick tome, but quite the fascinating work for history buffs, and serious students of our culture.
Along the same lines as Diamond's "Guns, Germs and Steel" except a little more high-brow and detailed in the statistics.
My accent is slight, but I certainly do sound more Atlanta than, say, New York. Now there's a sound that grates on a musician's ear.  | |

As for the yankee gentleman who thinks his own research is the law, I'm afraid you are VERY wrong indeed. I have the southern drawl...accent whatever you would like to call it. Florida is really only "southern" up north of Orlando, other than that we have a bunch of snooty yankees who after paying their taxes in the northern states and working and living in a big city... and after years of cutting down the south, retire and haul their yankee butts down here to live!!! I do not have to push the fact that I'm southern, if you ever met me you would know it. I am stating these points because that is what this thread is about.
Real southern people are very proud of their heritage. And for the record, the confederate flag has NOTHING to do with hatred.. or our dislike of blacks!!! You have some rednecks who seem to think that is what it's all about and also some northern folks who think that. Well, I'm here to tell you that is NOT what that flag is supposed to represent!!! If you want to get into a discussion of how the NORTHERN people had indentured servents.. how they tricked the immigrants to come to American so they could work them like dogs and treat them as bad if not worse.. just let me know!! This country gal can hold her own.

Now I am not from Atlanta, however I have lived in Atlanta for a long time. If anyone thinks there going to hear a southern accent or find a true southern bell in Atlanta, better think again. Atlanta is well over ran by Yankee's, and of coarse some women who are southern wanabees.
The Greatest Test for a southern women is: Tell her you are not turned on by a southern accent. A fake southern wanabee will get pissed of, but a true southern sweetheart will not.
Try it, rather she has a southern accent or not. A true southern sweetheart will not get upset if the south doesn't turn you on. She realizes its not the south or southern accent that makes a women, its who she is as a person.
I personally LOVE the south and southern women. Its not their accent (and very few have much of one), but its there personality, charm, and good looks. I never even know there from the south until I get to know them. | |
