| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 12/19/2007 2:57:16 PM | Just saw "I am Legend" last nite, starring Will Smith. I'm not a big Will Smith fan (he's ok, but has anyone else seen "Wild Wild West"? ).
It was an OK movie; as always the book is better (but the book isn't really written to be made as a movie, about 3/4 of it is the guy's personal thoughts and introspection/remembering).

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 12/24/2007 10:11:46 PM | PS I Love You.... Apparently based on a book by Cecelia Ahern.
My sis said this was the chick flick of the year; but then my sis is in love with Gerard Butler. The opening scene is of Hilary Swank (Holly Kennedy) having a major hissy fit at her Irish hubby Gerry (Butler), which is so unbelievably stupid it puts all women everwhere in a bad light. Totally irrational, mindless, twisted, illogic... yep I can almost hear some men out there reminiscing on similar episodes they themselves may have experienced with women. Does the word "drama queen" mean anything to anyone out there? I really felt for Gerry, as he was trying to make sense of her hysterics and get a simple reason/answer for the outburst. Follow with the make-up sex... oh please!
Kathy Bates is Holly's mother, and does an excellent job, as usual. Harry Connick Jr. is "Daniel" the fellow working in Bates' pub, who falls for Holly too soon after the death of Gerry (brain tumour). Then there is this yummy Irish William (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) fellow she bumps uglies with as she follows the directions in Gerry's post-mortem letters and travels to Ireland to visit his folks.
Anyway, it was more funny than moving, with the only scene that actually brought a tear to the eye being the one near the end wherein Bates hands Swank the last letter.
I was distracted by Swank's huge goat-like teeth, which the lips seldom seemed capable of covering. Her sister was portrayed as a blond upbeat stereotypical idiot. Her best friend was the ditz from "Friends" (Lisa Kudrow?) who was also quite lame... but you HAD to laugh at her technique in meeting men: question 1) are you married? question 2) are you gay? question 3) are you employed/what do you do? 4) big smooch to see if there's chemistry! No man in his right mind will like this movie. And even though I am fond of chick flicks, I'd say it's a 4 of 10.
Happy Yuletide to all! | |

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 12/30/2007 8:40:05 PM | Sweeny Todd - my oh my. As the movie progressed I was laughing and clapping along with the charming songs. And the cinematography - man does London look all sooty and forlorn as only Victorian London can. The cast is wonderful, although purists sniff at the idea of Helena Bonham Carter as the very peculiar pie lady - a role that calls for a more older woman. But hey she's Burton's sweety so there ya go. The beach side musical number was fun all the way through. And the throat slittings, I haven't seen that much blood on the screen since Frank Miller's 300. Ah Victorian England, where the 'can do' attitude of the day makes it perfectly reasonable for a insane barber to build a contraption into his barbers chair to help dispose of the bodies by sending them down a chute to the pie bakery. Perhaps this is whats wrong with our world of today - too much relience on ready made gadgets and not enough home tinkerers rolling up their sleeves and inventing on the spot. Anyone care for some people pies?

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 12/30/2007 9:48:26 PM | The Golden Compass… now that was a bit different than I expected! Lyra our heroine is played by Dakota Blue Richards, and is an orphan child raised in the Jordan college setting apart from the rest of the Majesterium, which is depicted as authoritarian with the tendency, as explained by Nicole Kidman’s nasty slippery character Mrs. Coulter, to want people to only think correct and good things. In this parallel universe where the soul exists apart from the body as a “daemon” in the form of an animal; Lyra’s two good friends are both kidnapped by the Majesterium who are performing experiments in an attempt to separate the children from their souls. The whole movie is about the uncovering of the plotting of the Majesterium and finding and saving children who have been abducted. You’ll find Lord Asriel played by Daniel Craig (James Bond from Casino Royale) turns out to by Lyra’s father, an appearance by Christopher Lee, the unmistakable voice of Ian McKellen as the ice bear Iorek Byrnison, and Sam Elliot as the aeronaut Lee Scoresby. All the animals/daemons in the film are generated by computers, as are the amazing zepplins and cityscapes. Quite a good romp which quite plainly alludes to further adventures to rescue Lord Asriel whom the Majesterium plans to assasinate. I’d give it an 8 of 10, with some parts that small children might find frightening.
Quite good actually, and I’m not sure what the Christians are howling about with regard to it? (Sure there are a flock of witches, who are the “good guys” in the final escape scene, featured by the charming Eva Green.) I’ve read blurbs out there on the ‘net which suggest that it is an attempt to recruit youngsters into the atheist way of thinking. The author of the Dark Materials Trilogy (this movie is based on the first book called Northern Lights) is Philip Pullman, who is an atheist, and isn’t shy about it, though the Majesterium can be translated to any secular governing body, not necessarily a religious one. But to suggest this film is about “killing god”??? Ummm… nope……. I don’t see that at all.

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 12/30/2007 10:34:01 PM | The Kite Runner…. excellent film! Set in Kabul Afghanistan, two boys are best friends in the ‘70’s prior to the Soviet invasion. One boy, Amir is the son of a well-to-do family and his friend Hassan is the son of the Hazara servant who works for them. Shortly after their kite wins in a tournament Hassan undergoes a brutal attack/rape when he won’t relinquish the last kite they cut down to some punks who discriminate against the Hazara tribe locally. Amir, who is shy and non-confrontational witnesses the proceedings, though Hassan doesn’t know it, and fails to stand by his long-time friend during the crisis. Consumed by guilt and pushing aside his friend because he can’t deal with his own perceived failure, eventually Amir and his father are forced to leave Kabul or possibly be killed for their political status during the Soviet takeover. Years later in San Francisco, Amir graduates from college and wants to become a writer. A call comes from the now Taliban-invested country of Afghanistan asking for Amir to return. Hassan and his wife were brutally murdered and Hassan’s father asks that Amir attempt to rescue Hassan’s only son Sohrab who is now an orphan. A circular story, in that Amir and his new wife are unable to have children, the rescue will be Amir’s posthumous atonement to his best friend. A secret is unveiled as well, but I won’t spoil it.
From a bustling community with underlying racial tensions, we see the city destroyed and the people repressed under the religious tyranny of the Taliban. It is a story about youth, the dissolution of innocence, the terror of war, and a young man’s coming to terms with his past.
This film is a 9 of 10.
Cheers!

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 1/13/2008 3:32:06 PM | Alien Versus Predator II
Well ya know, I really liked the original Alien movie, and although the subsequent ones weren't as good, they were entertaining in a "run the monster is going to get us and kill us all" sort of a way. And there was Predator, with Arnie and that was a macho Rambo versus the nasty monster type thing. You know what I think (no this is not based on any facts at all)? A couple of the sons of some producer or director out there were eating cheesies and drinking cokes one day after watching those movies and got into a fannish/boyish argument over which monster would win. And so, years later they somehow found funding and a writer and got it all together... pitting the two creatures from different timelines in separate science fiction universes in an ancient city on Earth below the Antarctic landmass in the first movie with humans as the "collateral damage". I saw this one just over the holidays, and thought it was actually pretty cheesy itself, but it did prepare me for the latest version. More running, screaming, dying and gross monster fun! Kids, pregnant women, homeless people, nobody is safe; everyone who develops even a tiny bit of character through the script dies horribly, with a small handful of exceptions. Not to mention how the US government steps in at the end and does the typical "overkill" scenario. So you never really know which monster won.
Couple of comments from an Alien fan though. It seems that those face-hugger critters are developing into larval chest-bursting Aliens faster and faster.... seems to take minutes compared to days, which was the standard before. I recognise that the monster will take on characteristics of the host, which is why the Alien/Predator hybrid is particularly nasty. But did you know the the Predator species reproduces by "oral" methods? Kewl eh, no egg-pods for them! As usual, everything is dark and it's hard to get a clear view of a creature, and there is blood everywhere. There is a gun-toting, helicopter-flying character who very much resembles Ripley, and her little girl (remember Newt?) and an ex-con who somewhat resembles the surviving marine from Aliens the second movie. Right down to the big fly-out with the dramatic music while they race ahead of the bomb that blows up the city... jeez how original was that?? Have to admit though I totally didn't know who the woman was in the last scene and what was all about; apart from the fact that one Predator weapon was rescued and was technology ahead of where we are currently.

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 2/16/2008 9:39:13 PM | Untraceable
The FBI has a division dedicated to cyber crime. Diane Lane portrays agent Jennifer Marsh who gets a lead on a website dedicated to showing violent and painful murders live. The tech-savvy serial killer has made the site untraceable and as an added bonus, the more people who log onto the site increase the speed at which the victim dies. This crime drama reminds me of similar genre films such as “Kiss the Girls”, “Silence of the Lambs” and “Seven”. The various original tortures dreamt up by the murderer are frighteningly grotesque and bound to leave the viewer feeling disturbed. I hope this appalling movie hasn’t given the psychopaths out there any new ideas. I’d give it a 6 of 10 for this type of film, because it was a bit predictable, and an 8 of 10 for horror factor.

The special effects are pre digital age and are stll impressive. Donald Moffet as L.B.J. is hysterical, one of the best performances of his career. Next purchase - Memphis Belle, to prepare for my trip this summer in the 'Swoose', a restored B-17!

I still haven't seen the 2nd or 3rd Star Wars films but I did manage to finally see the 3rd Matrix movie on TV last summer.

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 2/17/2008 10:52:17 PM | The Bucket List
Gotta love those Rob Reiner films! Two old farts find out they have terminal cancer. One is billionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) who actually owns the hospital in which he now has to share a room with a mechanic by the name of Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman). After undergoing operations and chemotherapy, Cole finds out he’s got about 6 months and Carter is told he has about a year. They make friends while on the cancer ward, and decide they need to get their wish list of “things to do before they kick the bucket” complete. So off they go, on Cole’s dollars to do things they have always wanted to. It’s a heart-warming and funny movie with poignant moments… you have to wonder if they write scripts just for Jack Nicholson as he is type-cast as a crusty bugger, with Morgan Freeman as the usual warm and level headed reasonable man (not quite the “odd couple” but something akin to it). How they differ though is in their “family”, Cole with virtually none of his own in contrast to Carter’s situation. Interesting ending.
This is an awesome movie with two excellent actors, worth every cent. 9 of 10

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 2/18/2008 9:45:52 AM | Definitely, Maybe
The theatre was packed with a lot of teenaged girls (chick flick) to see this movie, probably because cute young Ryan Reynolds played the part of Will Hayes, a single father who is about to sign his divorce papers. At school his 11-year-old daughter Maya (Abigail Breslyn) has just learned all about human reproduction and now wants to know about her dad’s past relationships. Will agrees, but changes the names of the women involved, and it’s up to Maya to figure things out. The story involves three ladies, and how circumstance and timing turn each relationship into a disaster… or does it?
When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it would be about a little girl who is trying to get her dad to meet other women. I was also confused at the start as to whether in fact Maya knew who her biological mother was. It becomes evident that she does (at the end) as mom comes to pick her up, and you realize who she is. It is a film that attempts to be a feel-good movie, but which sort of drags on and on. Good thing Ryan Reynolds is eye candy, and big-eyed Abigail is so cute, otherwise it wouldn’t rate the 5 of 10.

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 2/18/2008 5:24:42 PM | The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
I wish they had computer-generated animation when I was a kid! This is a really fun movie for the family, the story surrounding the legend of the Loch Ness monster to be precise. According to the old fellow (Brian Cox) in the pub, Celtic legend has it that the water horse is a magical creature, which lives in large bodies of water and eats fish. It is a single creature and at the end of its life will lay but a single egg, which hatches the next generation. The story as told happens during the Second World War in Scotland where the widow Anne MacMorrow (Emily Watson) becomes host to a regiment who are charged with keeping German subs at bay in the Loch. Her son Angus (Alex Etel) finds the egg along the shoreline and secretly hatches it. The flippered and charismatic creature is a ravenous beastie whom Angus names Crusoe. It grows huge in a remarkably short period of time, and becomes known to the older sister and also to the new handyman Lewis Mowbray (Ben Chaplin) who eventually conspire to release it into the Loch when it outgrows barrel, bathtub and then fishpond. Of course after that there are sightings, and the confused local regiment begin taking shots at it. And…… that is where I’ll leave the story! 8 of 10

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 3/9/2008 10:11:00 PM | Walk all over me, now playing at the Globe. The local reviews were not very enthusiastic, but I think you need a better sense of humour then the reviewers displayed. LeeLee Sobieski is a small town klutz with esteem issues. She escapes to the big city and links up with her former friend/babysitter Celine played by someone I think is on Battlestar Galactica? Anyhoo, the buddy is a dominatrix, and it doesn't take too long for LeeLee to decide this life pays better than checkout staff at a grocery store. Her first client is a barrel of trouble, as he is on the run from former 'business partners' who want their 1/2 million back. Claims he didn't take it, but truth is in short supply in the underworld and the adventure begins from there. Some great make up work when various people are beaten up (I think they used the****Smith blood recipe), and the girls look godamm gorgeous in the various outfits they barely fit into. The camera angles are sometimes too arsty, but its fun to see Winnipeg locations on view as Vancouver. It may not stay too long so see it soon! | |

Not too bad, they manage screwball comedy dialogue reasonably well. Lots of great music in the soundtrack (including Gershwin!). Fans of football comedy should check out Harold Lloyd's 'The Freshman' from 1927. Those silent movies can pack a punch.
