Ever see Gladiator with Russell Crowe? Similar sort of grainy picture, in sepia tones with that slow-motion effect during the battle scenes. Apparently done with a similar style to Sin City, some of the scenes take on a very weird character, like they are pictures in a gallery, surreal. The movie itself? Very "manly".... lots of swarthy well-built Greek (or in the case of the lead actor Scottish) men in leather loin gear with 6-packs galore, swords, spears, beheadings, delimbing, blood, gore, sweat, dirt, mutants, macho motto: "fight and die for freedom no matter what the odds!" and lets not forget the nekkid chix and sex!
Not sure about the quality of the acting, it should be seen on the big screen or on your plasma at home boys to get the full effect. Me? 4 of 10, Him? 9 of 10. LOL

Fortuitously, Cinderella overcomes her evil stepmothers magic and lives happily ever after.
We bought the newly released Peter Pan DVD as well, but that is for tomorrow night.

Departed - I fell asleep 1/2 way through (guess I departed it). Hero (again) - Still enjoy it. Over the Hedge (again) - In life, are you an RJ, Vern 274 days left till winter , Hammy, Heather, Stella or ... Steve? Thank You for Smoking - And that is why I am never wrong. Prestige - though I didn't like it as much as The Illusionist - definitely a must see.

From RottenTomatoes.com: Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the 50's, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbor, and rotting zombies deliver the mail. Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with a craving for human flesh. A war began, pitting the living against the dead. In the ensuing revolution, a corporation was born: ZomCon, who defeated the legions of undead, and domesticated the zombies, making them our industrial workers, our domestic servants - a productive part of society. ZomCon would like the people of Willard to believe they have everything under control… but do they?

From spellingbee:
Evocative of the best of Tim Burton and David Lynch, this clever Canadian movie has plenty of wickedly dark laugh-out-loud moments... including one side-splitting line that the entire film may have been set up to pay off!
The entire cast shines but the real standouts are K'Sun Ray who, as Timmy perfectly captures both the innocence and angst of childhood... and Billy Connolly, whose zombie expresses the heart and soul of the human condition... without ever saying a word.
Visually delightful, the film also offers a highly stylized version of 50's suburbia that's a treat for the senses... and Carrie-Anne Moss's wardrobe is simply to die for!

I love B0nd movies, and I was real hesitant to embrace Daniel Craig as Bond, as well, I loved Pierce Brosnan, he's so beautiful and watching him was a pleasure - oh yeah, and not a bad actor . However, Craig has a different character, but still the same womanizing tendencies as the other Bonds. I liked his intensity better than Brosnan's.
The movie was pretty action oriented as one would expect, but also, Craig has a pretty nice body as one gets to see it in the film. And those eyes...wow..the eyes...they got my attention. Scale of 1 to 10...I'd give it an 8.5.

Posted: 4/1/2007 5:24:49 PM | There's something fun about seeing a movie that was filmed in Winnipeg... you get to see if you can recognize anyone you know among the passersby and extras... and if the movie's really dull, you can amuse yourself by playing "spot the local landmark". But you won't have time for any of that after you say a quick "Hello, Millennium Library!" while taking in The Lookout.
A real-to-the-ear script and excellent performances from the entire cast - especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt (the kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun, all nicely grown up) and Jeff Daniels (continuing his current streak of solid career choices) - elevate this thoroughly engaging little film far above the expectable heist-flick cliches. It all looks so very familiar, and yet the movie never loosens its grip in creating a steady feeling of foreboding. Indifference to the fate of these characters is not an option. Well played, indeed.

But seeing Em's latest pics, wondering if that would be worth renting!

I think the last movie I saw in theaters was either Trailer Park Boys or Little Miss Sunshine, both at Cinema City. And they were both hilarious!

| What is the last movie you've seen in the theatre or vid...? Posted: 4/7/2007 8:34:03 AM | The Hoax is based on the true story of fake Howard Hughes biographer, Clifford Irving. Richard Gere & Alfred Molina turn in perfectly fine performances... as does the entire supporting cast... but I found the film offers little insight into the internal workings of these characters who create and get caught up in an outrageous lie with far-reaching implications. As far as making a profound statement about media, I've yet to see another film meet the bar set by Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers.
The movie does succeed in capturing an appropriate sense of paranoia about the era and for me was very remiscient of the look and feel of Zodiac, another movie set in the same time period. So much so, in fact, that it makes me wonder if there isn't a standard Hollywood manual for recreating the 70's via cliche: "Let's see... early 7o's... can of TAB - check. CCR on the radio - check. Vietnam war protesters - check."

Equal doses of comedy and drama, the film succeeds both as social satire and a touching movie about a family that finds itself united in times of crisis.
* It's kind of sad really, how a university education in North America doesn't always include learning how to mix a molotov cocktail.
