A gratuitous little gore-fest called 28 Weeks Later. After a somewhat engaging opening sequence, this one comes up woefully short on discernable plot and character development, and long on chaotic and repetitive scenes that add nothing new to the *ahem* "story", complete with plot holes that you could manoeuver a military helicopter through.

There were a couple of scenes that got a visceral reaction from me... one, because well just the very thought was horrifying... and another of the firebombing of London that was just visually stunning... but my overwhelming response to this overly loud, underdeveloped movie was one of pain. And perhaps the thing that pained me most of all was the complete waste of the usually wonderful Robert Carlyle.

Well, saw Shrek the third, about as much as iexpected. Puss In Boots is hardly as engaging as last time. Some good gags, but not enough. Also, there isn't any outakes after the end credits so when they start to roll you can leave.

Although I'm not ordinarily a big fan of pregnancy-related humour in the movies, I adored the witty and poignant little indie comedy Waitress. The entire cast knocks it out of the park as an ensemble of quirky yet realistic characters who don't often make the wisest choices in their yearning for a little slice of pie called happiness. Standouts are the luminous Kerri Russell in the lead role (what a face!), Jeremy Sisto who simmers as her pathetic no-good husband, and Andy (not dead yet!) Griffith as an endearingly crusty old curmudgeon who threatens to steal the show with all the sweetest lines.

A movie aboout the transformative power of making music, the small-budget Irish film Once is a master class in the art of simple story-telling... in film and music.

Affection for the film is created in its small and powerfully honest moments... like the the way a man can look at a woman with awed reverence and pure tenderness when he's captivated by witnessing her at her most vulnerable. Like the magic in the mix that's created whenever people who live and love for and by music gather together. And like the heart and hope that dwells in the lyric... "Take this sinking boat and point it home... we've got time."

*sniff*

Yeah... like that.

I watched The Illusionist this morning, and that was a fantastic movie, never expected it to end that way (but then again I am probably the only one who didn't get The Sixth Sense until it ended).

Good movie, ok except one flaw I caught onto. When she was wearing her necklace he made for her, she had attached a real chain to it later on, when he regave it to her, it was on the twine that he originally attached it to. Normally I don't catch these things.

I too didn't get the Sixth Sense until the end. I was told you have to watch it twice if you didn't get the ending the first time. It makes "sense" then.
I recently watched 1408. Didn't know that it's a Stephen King movie. It was okay though. Somewhat drawn out. Some comedy which is good. I like John Cusak in roles like Must love dogs as opposed to ones like 1408

The Simpsons Movie romps right along, delivering several hearty laughs a minute for stalwart fans of America's favourite dysfunctional family... while skewering timely issues like celebrity culture (Green Day, meet Titanic... "It's been an honour playing with you, gentlemen."), government corruption ("You ever try going mad without power? No one listens to you." ), the "irritating truth" of environmental pollution, religious fervor (Homer, flipping through The Bible in the midst of a crisis, "There are no answers in this book!"), and one of my favourite things to poke fun at... the Disney-fication of contemporary culture ("We're gonna need more birds.").

And oh, if that's not quite enjoyable enough... this flick is highly quotable:

Ned Flanders: "Don't forget to thank the Lord for this bountiful... PENIS!"

Rod & Todd Flanders: "Bountiful penis. Amen."

9.5 mascots of an evil corporation* out of 10

Disclaimer: Apologies to any Disney fans who may take umbrage with the rating system... nothing personal, but it was either this or the bountiful penises.

Last was "I now pronounce you chuck & larry". I enjoyed it; if you like Adam Sandler you'll enjoy it, if not you probably won't. Very formulaic but nice light summer froth to lose yourself in for a bit (in an air conditioned theatre).

this flick is highly quotable

Funny you should say that. I took my daughters to the drive-in where we saw The Simpson's movie and Hairspray this weekend. Today, while we were driving out to Stonewall to play laser tag, the kids were singing "spider pig, spider pig, does what ever a spider pig does" all the way there....LOL.

As far as reviews go, the Simpson's Movie definitely brings back some of the biting humour that the series had in its early years. I was guffawing out loud at several scenes.

Hairspray is good if you are in the mood for watching a musical along the lines of High School Musical or Grease (though John Travolta's role is "larger" in Hairspray). Some funky dance moves and a history lesson about segregation made this movie worth watching for me.

Deliver Us From Evil is a superb documentary and a searing look at an institution protecting its leaders at the expense of its followers. A profoundly disturbing chronicle of a wolf in sheep's clothing, the film builds a clear-eyed case against pedophile priest Oliver O'Grady, and the Catholic bureaucracy that protected him. His youngest victim was a 9 month old girl. He is currently free and living in Ireland, and will receive a church "pension" at age 65.

What can I say about Rescue Dawn, other than it might be the quietest war movie I've ever seen?

Apparently based on real life events, this movie is nothing short of superb in moments... especially the ones that involve Steve Zahn, who should definitely be remembered in the Best Supporting Actor category come Oscar time. The cinematography is masterful without being bombastic and the direction by Werner Herzog generates several moments of genuine suspense without a lot of unnecessary noise.

That's not to say that the film isn't overblown in other parts. I just wasn't sure whether I was supposed to believe Christian Bale's lead character was just an ordinary guy with a simple passion and an extraordinary will to live, or some McGuyver-like super-hero/savant who simply doesn't know how or when to be afraid. I particularly found the rah-rah-sis-boom-bah-welcome-the-conquering hero ending to detract from the pathos and horror of the best of the earlier scenes.

Quite simply, if this movie was a cookie, I say it was an Oreo... the best stuff's in the middle.

Hairspray is soooo close to being a perfect movie! It's chock full of infectious sing-along-able songs and toe-tapping dance numbers delivered by an incomparable cast. Michelle Pfieffer owns this film. Newcomer Nikki Blonsky is an absolute gem. And Queen Latifah made me cry... what with that "I know where I've been" business and all.*sniff* Oh oh oh!... and the clothes are to die for!

Making it less than perfect... I found John Travolta's physical transfromation into a large woman esthetically disappointing and I struggled throughout with his bizarre choice of accent. The big talents of Allison Janney (Woo! Shoutouts to The West Wing AND American Beauty!), Jerry Stiller and Christopher Walken are most welcome but sadly also mostly under-utilized... although Walken does get the opportunity to outshine Travolta in a fabulous dance sequence mid-movie. Someboby. Definitely. Should. Dance. More.

All in all, this movie is two hours worth of feeling good. The biggest laughs come from sly moments that suggest the 60's that so many people are nostaligic about weren't quite so simple or innocent after all. Now that being said... girls, go get 'em! Boys, let's rumba!

I just watched "1408". I think the billing/advertising of it as a "horror" movie was sadly misleading. I'm not into the "horror" genre, but ending up watching this one. I think it was a great movie about redemption, dealing with the past, finding hope and faith, and a classic "good triumphs over evil" movie.

The last movie I saw on video was " The Number 23" . Great movie . It starts a little slow but eventually captures your interest. Nice twist at the end.

I also saw " Little Children" . Very, very good movie. I would like to read the book . It seems to be one of those movies that many subtle details would be missing.

Last movie in Theatre was "Knocked Up". LMAO

Last movie I saw on the beach ( Gimli Film Festival ) was " Water" ( subtitles).( Director Deepa Mehta . Academy Award nominee for best foreign language film) This movie was absolutely stunning and emotionally riveting in every way possible.

For all you movie buffs out there: Coming up this week.

Ok, before this weekend all I knew of Neil Gaiman is that he is responsible for one of my favourite quotes about love: http://forums.plentyoffish.com/2539381datingPostpage14.aspx

Apparently he's written some other stuff, including the novella on which the fantasy movie Stardust is based.

Much of what goes on is stereotypical fairy-tale fare... and I don't think it can help but be widely evocative of (but doesn't quite measure up to) the incomparable Princess Bride. It's enjoyable in its own right, though... the story's engaging enough and filled with solid performances throughout (more Peter O'Toole and Ricky Gervais, please). Look for Rober DeNiro to provide some unexpected sweetness.

For me, much of the movie's charm and humour comes from its small but slyly clever moments... mostly when these fantasy characters portray some very human attributes: like the farmboy turned into a buxom young maid appreciatively checking out his own newfound cleavage... and the eye-rolling 400 year-old witches and the snickering ghosts of slain princes who prove what I've oft suspected, that not even with time and death is sibling rivalry really transcended. ;)

Pirates Of The Caribbean, last night at cheap movie night. You just gotta love sequels of a sexy priate. Story was different and unexpected. Not as many funny lines or special effects, as the other Pirates movies, but the story was enjoyable.
