Ahh sweet video games. Where would I be without you?? *hugs them*

I play online all the time. Infact, I join clans for certain games, and compete in competitions and whatnot. Yes, it does consume my time, but only if I let it.

*shines her sniper rifle* Muahaha!

OT: I like to play video games (when time permits) but I think I would rather spend time with my guy before vegging infront of the tv with my video games lol.

I know a guy....he's 41...does the "raids" etc...I think it's the world of warcraft game...it's one of the things that killed his marriage I'm told. I'm sure he was handed a few clues down the road as it couldn't have been the only thing. But, a 10 hour day raiding "whatever" takes quite a chunk out of "couple time"....he regrets it now I suppose....but, she said he still hasn't given it up...of course, he's alone now, so I suppose it doesn't matter, lol.....

post # 7: dump her because she enjoys spending a lot of time with a 'hobby' you consider unproductive and wasteful. Personally, i think she's doing that to dump you the easy way...I don't think she's being passive aggressive and punishing you by being distracted by a mmog. She might, but mmogs are addictive, so i believe she's simply being 'escapist' for other reasons.
join her??? video games are ghey mmmkay
THE PROS AND CONS OF VIDEO GAMES
INTRODUCTION
okay, first off anyone playing a mmog is highly distracted by what amounts to a conference call IM window within a "game" that is for all practical purposes a glorified screensaver. For those of you still a bit unclear what the acronym mmog stands for, it's Massively Multiplayer Online Game (like stuffing thousands of players into one big sandbox and letting them go at it)

WHY ENJOY THE HOBBY?
To truly enjoy the mmog gaming experience one must spend at least an hour hanging out with your online friends...teamwork is rewarding, but time consuming. A mmog is ALOT more productive than say, writing stuff on these forums, in the sense that when you leave and come back a week later, the stuff you created is still right there waiting for you...in a world with real players doing the same.

A PRODUCTIVE HOBBY?
on the flip side, a mmog is just another video game, and being 'productive' within that video game relates to the real world in ONLY one fashion: selling yer stuff on eBay for cold hard cash. (but even that is ludicrous. how many hundreds of hours of staring at your computer 'working' to get that $250 item? lessie $250 divided by 250 hours? lol)

AN EPHEMERAL HOBBY?
Personally, i'm thinking about getting back into "eve-online" (sci fi mmog) so i can spend a few hours a week saying hi to old friends and cobbling together a fictitious empire. To me it's like building a sandcastle. did i mention i like sandcastles rather than surfing?

A SPECTATOR SPORT?
Now, having a distraction like this is a MAJOR problem when it comes to a relationship in real life. Yes, a mmog potentially allows you to attend to other things while playing the game. But, don't kid yourself, you're basically camped out in front of your computer doing an activity that cannot be shared with your partner (unless that partner is on the computer elsewhere and joins you)

Now then, having said all that, we come to that quote i posted at the top there. If you don't like video games why denigrate something your partner enjoys? Oh, sure, i find american football to be about as uplifting as watching paint dry...And im damn sure a woman friend of mine watching top heavy dudes run around in tights is more interested in drooling than watching such a stupid game. Then again, that's what? 2 hours to watch something without interacting with it? Sure, it's a heck of a lot more dramatic than watching a glorified screensaver, but less personally productive.

QUIET TIME OR FULL TIME DISTRACTION?
Look, it's entertainment.. If your date stands you up to go watch a football game with his/her buds, you've got a right to be pissed. A relationship is a lot more satisfying than participating or observing a sport. A relationship should be one's main "distraction"...and it has to be a 'welcome distraction'

That takes effort. by nature, most people are selfish. And granted, everyone needs some quiet time to enjoy light entertainment they know will bore their partner.

HOBBY VERSUS ESCAPISM
The problem is knowing when light entertainment passes from a distraction into full on 'escapism' ...people like calling it 'addiction' but it's really not a physical drug now, is it? On can debate whether a sedentary habit like a mmog is 'escapiism' or merely a 'hobby', but right now the issue is whether this dude should dump a girl who stands him up.

CONCLUSION
yeah. dump the $^$@#$%^ If you actually think gaming is ghey, and you got stood up so your gf could do something "ghey", then by all means give her the boot. I'm sure she'll be overjoyed the person who can't appreciate her 'hobby' has buggered off.

I've gone thru the EQ1 and raiding, I've had many fights over it, but we would comprimise though since there was set raiding times. If you don't like it move on, doesn't sound like you 2 are very serious as at that if you didn't know she was into playing video games. So suck it up deal with it and talk to her about, or move along cause there is many other guys that would rather be with her.

Muffy, great post! While it was long......I have to say, as sleepy and as unsure I am of my cohearant (sp) state, I have to say (once more) great post. I'm sleep deprived and my mind is a million miles away, but in talking about this..I couldn't agree more. And, it enlightened my friend as well! lol....

I wonder if she's dating "Leeeeerrrooooooyyyyyy!!" That video cracks me up.

Seems like its just compatibility. Sucks, but what can you do. Dump her or take up a pixelated sword and defend her honour.

If she blew off time with you for an online game then you just aren't that important in her life. Move on.

I guess I should add if it happens ALL the time. If it is just her hobby ... then either accept it ..or move on.

I dont mind if she games or not's I'll play a good video game every now and then. I'm big into Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Heck I even played the originals when I was a very young kid. In those day's it was Dragon Warrior and you had this horribly blocky purple and white guy and the axe knight was nothing funny though Eric's armor was pretty neat. And the classic "defeat green dragon and save princess" wasnt old yet. They even had a graphic where your purple hero carries her! I don't remember if she helped the team out or not. But what I do notice about these games is who would pay $200,000 for a sword? I'm sorry but it look's like Cloud Strife and others should protest at these rediculously high weapon/armor prices, especially in towns near the end of the game, you may as well buy a tank with that kind of dough.

Also of note having kid's play these kind of video games will teach your children a thing or two about finances and thus improve math skills (son: Dad, why is that sword so expensive?" Dad: Well, because shop owners love to rip people off, well that sword looks like a reasonable price, buy that one instead, but where would a dragon or behemoth make that much dough though? makes ya think, doesnt it son?" Son: "it sure does dad, it sure does" son: "just how does that guy with a sword take machine gun fire without so much as a scratch?" Dad: "well son, when you spend $100,000 on armor it better be worth it, though it was overpriced even considering the quality, well, to afford that sword you better mug more warewolves, dragons, and wizards".

i'd be HAPPY she likes video-games! a woman that understands someone else's need to entertain thru video-games is a gem (rare), as far as i'm concerned.

OP: If you don't like women that like video games, you might as well join a monestary. I'm in the video game biz so I'll throw some stats out there for ya - Women 18-25 - 74% play video games. 25-40 62%, 40-55 45%.

Get with the times or you may find the only person touching your joystick is you!

I refuse to buy WoW, because those games are literally heroin to me. I would end up single.

My SO has a married friend whose husband is *completely* addicted and it is causing marital issues.

Mix an MMORPG with even a mild case of depression or boredom and you have a serious addiction. Boy do I know.

pretty worthless statistic you've presented there vorax. "Women 18-25 - 74% play video games", what, an hour a month, twelve hours a day? i play a breakout clone during down time at work so i guess i play video games too. im talking about a girl whos primary past time is a video game.

anyway she is available now (so far as being single) although i wont do her the dishonor of giving out her eq2 screen name, if you want to know you must be as lame as she is.

There are all kinds of other stats on how much time they spend in that week and on what kinds of games. The spreads range from 1-40 hours across virtually all the female demographics, with the average at around 8 hours per week.

I should have asked in one of the other posts, but why do you find video games lame? It's more intelligent then vegging watching TV or a movie. Just wondering what your beef is with them.

i would hardly claim video games require more intelligence than anything else concidering the spread of age that can participate. games might require more hand/eye coordination than required to view a movie but i like to think i understand the plot of most movies better than my young cusin who destroyed me everytime back in my 007 days on gq.

the beef isn't so much with video games but with those individuals who become consumed inside those virtual worlds. it's not my life so i cant judge but i've noticed other aspects of their lives become neglected. and while they may be interacting with real people in these worlds i've always valued family and friends who support and value me for more than just my continued participation in a video game fantasy.

these people are lame in my eyes, and if they take it to the extreem in time will probably be so in the literal sense of the word as well.

I see nothing wrong with people who game, however I will not date someone who plays online games such as EQ and WoW. I can sit and play XBOX with my SO and we can pause at anytime. I have no problems with console games, arcade games and even most computer games, however online games are way too time consuming. If someone plays MMORPG, I will not date them.
