Posted: 3/21/2006 3:58:39 AM | louis syfur I can answer part of your question. The handful of moderators here are all volunteers. Don't remember the numbers but something like 10,000 new posts daily. Give or take a few thousand. Anyway, the numbers are staggering. There is a thread in this forum called rule violations, your url should be posted there. That's why it IS there, when a member notes a violation you can report it here or email the forum_moderator account. Also, for violations on profiles, there is a report user button at the very bottom. You have to be logged in for it to show up. So that's why you can find rules being broken, not that the rules are being applied arbitarily or unfairly, rather the mods themselves cannot catch every rule violation. It is a free site and they depend on the membership to help out with reporting such. So now you know how.
As to the "innocent" pics, may be innocent in your eyes. If it is in violation of the picture posting rules, it's in violation. Period. We all agreed to the TOS when we signed up. | |

Posted: 3/21/2006 5:53:19 AM | Certain art work is considered in the public domain, similar to classical music. The piece reaches a certain age and is considered to be free to use, and copy as the public sees fit.
Recognizing this as requiring some judgement... what do you do with a nude like David, Venus de Milo, or a Mona Lisa? None are protected by copyright laws.
As it is not practical to check millions of profile pics for copyright, you risk losing the pic privilege if you stray from its intended purpose. Fact is, others see the misuse of the privilege, post a web pic, lose their privilege to post pics, or lose their profile if a pic is shared by other profiles (multiple profile filtering), and join countless others in askin "Why?". So, while it may not be a copyright infringement, there are no resources to check millions of pics, so even "public domain" pics are a nuisance. | |

If service providers do not keep their terms current, they cannot reasonably expect people to bother reading and adhering to them. Why should people bother to read a terms of service web page if it doesn't actually display the terms of service?
Of course the administrator can ban people as desired. That's stated in the terms. I'm just saying it's not fair until you update them.
When I joined, I carefully read those terms before posting an image. Upon reading this thread, it's apparent my image is a "nuisance" that can result in loss of service. (My picture is public domain.) I'll change it, but please change the terms of service! | |

I personally enjoy just talking on forums and even though I'm single, I'm not looking for a mate thru the internet.

Posted: 3/22/2006 3:55:56 AM | Its a great idea in theory but since people can post any pics they want, IMHO you may only be encouraging the use of faked pics from the people here who don't want to show who they are and want to continue talking on forums/emails in secrecy.
If the only way to not get removed is to have a human being in your profile picture thats what people will get from a simple websearch and as long as you don't make any planned meeting, no one would ever know. So now your gonna have a site full of people's pictures and no one will know who is real and who isn't. At least with the non-human pictures, you knew who was serious about dating and who was just on here to kill some time online. JMHO
And what are the married and already dating people supposed to do now? There are a lot of people here that make it quiote clear they are not here looking for a date, or are hiding themselves for various reasons. Why can't those reasons (fear, not wanting to be judged on your appearance, etc) be respected? | |

In regard to having people pictures on a profile how can that be controlled and as such why make a rule about having to have people pictures if theres no way to really verify those pictures are genuine? A picture is just a picture isn't it? Maybe I'm missing something. :) | |

Listen, people, life is not guaranteed to be always fair. There is no way everyone can be pleased. Wasn't it Ben Franklin I believe who said you can fool some of the people some of the time, etc? You can insert the word "please" into that statement instead of the word "fool" and the same thing applies. You just can't please everybody all the time. If you could, the planet Earth would not have wars, nor borders, nor different countries, etc, etc.
What is so difficult about just taking the rules as they are written and abiding by them and accepting the interpretation of those rules by the person who wrote them? It isn't like this is Nazi Germany in 1943 and you are not allowed to leave and you are headed for a concentration camp if your pic doesn't meet with approval.
It simply means that if it isn't a normal picture of you with your clothes on and that picture is appropriate for identification when it shows up here in the forums, then it "might" be deleted and your privileges "might" be taken away.
As for having rules in place and then having some interpretation or even interpolation to fit a circumstance, that is the prerogative of the site owner and is a normal thing in society. If you are given a summons to appear in traffic court for speeding and plead guilty, you won't be charged if the officer who wrote the ticket isn't present. That happened to me once. There was a quiet roar of disagreement that came over the courtroom, but it was the rules. It wasn't fair to those whose officers were there that day, but it happens.
The statements about "the toothless, developmentally challenged kids" were in reference to pics taken from the web where it was obvious the pictures were not a representation of a person on this site. I personally have deleted the kid in the tee shirt that says he fecks on first date every few days. Now if that is the same person who keeps uploading it, then that person needs to have privilege suspended. If it is different people uploading it, then the bot will someday delete their profiles thinking they are multiple profiles of the same person.
And please don't make a joke of this with a "laughing out loud" acronym after such a statement. That is unfair in itself. It isn't cogent and it makes fun of the very people as much as putting their pic on a dating website as a joke.

Privately owned and operated is what is meant, meaning that the owner can decide what he will or will not allow independently of anyone else's judgment.
In my private forum, you'd had to own a bird and fit my description of a decent person in order to post there plus you'd had to either be referred by another trusted member or be chosen to be invited by myself. Now that is an absolute private forum, but it still is a private forum up until the point where the forum is run by a company for a profit and open to the generally accepted laws of equal access. Even then, you can't go off on one and tell Bill Gates he must change his rules.
How? In both cases you don't see a person
It is simple. The rules are.... This is a dating site and it includes a separate area for a forum but your pic on the dating side also shows up in the forum. You do not have to have a picture, but if you do, it must be a picture of you and must not be a picture of just something you own. | |

Not trying to debate either - just some valid points I feel I should bring up and are a little confusing to me.
If this is exclusive to dating, then why are there features available that are clearly anti-dating, like hiding profiles or registering into the site as married or dating?
Some people just come here for a social outlet, sadly enough, but aren't looking for a date. 
While the discussion forums are popular, they represent a tiny fraction of the traffic generated on the dating side. The forums are an adjunct to the dating site, not the other way around. The pic privilege rules are going to reflect this. Regardless of any "here for forums" vs "dating" argument, the pic rules also reflect the impossible task of checking pics for copyright infringement. "Inclusive of person of profile" only pics, make this problem manageable. | |

I believe that that feature was implemented for the women
that get 200 emails a day. Hiding their pro let's them catch up
on the overwhelming numbers. I know several women that
use it for that purpose only.

The reality is that there are married people on every dating site
who are looking. Sometimes as a couple, sometimes alone.
Better off for everyone if they are upfront about it.

That is a nebulous situation. Here is how I believe the admin sees it.....
This is primarily a dating site. You are free to come here and find a date directly, or you can find a friend with whom you may later decide to date, and you can remain in the forums even after you have found your partner.
The forums serve two main purposes. One is it is a very social place and helps you to find a date by allowing you the opportunity to get to know the person even better than the profile or the picture does. I personally use the forum to search for friends and when someone looks interesting in what they say, it is only then that I will look at their profile and decide whether or not to e-mail them. Secondly, it is a place to share your experiences and help others to find their partner.
There are some who come here only for the forums and those people are suspicious because this is a forum for the people who are here to find partners, not for the general public to just post opinions unrelated to dating. Take a look at the forums and you will see that they are all pertinent to dating and relationships, etc. There are some areas for off topic and current events, etc, but the main focus is on dating.
I also understand that people who come here just for the forums and have no intention of finding dates or partners are generally found out to be troublemakers. That is not absolute, but think about it in a different scenario...... (As example only - you can insert cooking web site or knitting web site) If you were not gay and were not searching for a gay partner, what could possibly be your motivation to go on a gay/lesbian website and say you were there just for the forums? It happens here where a person who does not cook at all starts posting opinions in an area dedicated to recipes. That's pretty obvious what they are up to.
The hidden profile is when you have found a partner and just want to remain on the forums. That keeps you from showing up in a search by those who are just come here and looking for a date/partner.
Just because your Ferrari will do 150 mph does not mean you gotta drive it that fast. Likewise, just because this site can be manipulated into allowing you to hide a profile and post only in the forums with no picture showing, means you should be doing it. | |

I completely agree. In fact many photos are not copyrighted at all and are just posted onto photo sharing or storage sites for anyone to just go look at (and steal via right clicking). Kinda scary. As such there's no way to tell if someone's stolen an unprotected picture. Just gotta be careful, I guess. | |

There is no, "must have a pic" rule.
But I do understand this isn't a pay site and we should follow the creator's wishes. I do not think you can fairly say there's only one general reason why those people would be on this site. You'd be generalizing thousands if not millions of people as being identical. Ridiculous.
The site itself, and the majority of the traffic generated by the site (of which the forums represents a very small fraction) makes the reason for the site, self-evident.
I have noted that people tend to contradict themselves in here. One person says its not a debate where on another unrelated thread a Mod warned that the thread was for reasonable debates that related to the subject and were not flaming.
This thread was posted by the Admin clarifying existing registration rules, this isn't a topic for "debate", the forums themself exist for the purpose of discussion and debate, barring anouncements of site policy such as this, (re: debate) by site Admin.
One person says the site is only for potential dating, but another mod will say everyone is free to come on here and isn't exclusive to just dating.
Nobody said "only for potential dating", the latter is true with the disclaimer: provided they abide by the site rules, guidelines, and TOS.
Is it the purpose of the site just whatever happens to be their whim at the moment and how can the user''s keep up with what today's mood is? One day everything is fine, another people are getting in trouble then its all okay again. Its very overwhelming.
Try reading the thread (and the rules, guidelines, TOS, etc. be assured these things aren't "whims") again, your frustration may be due to misinterpretation/misunderstanding.
I've started just posting and hoping what I say or do is okay, because I'm finding it too difficult to keep up with whats ok with this Mod but not with this one, or whatever.

Since they aren't trying to meet anyone, why would they need a picture at all?
And yes I know we are not required to have one. So thats the choice. Have your picture or no picture.
Precisely, having no picture for those here "just for forums" also serves to have them skipped by those who would browse their profile for dating.

Picture or not, sure, ....wishing to date? Then they're not, "just here for forums". I don't think you are understanding the context of the statement. While there may rare instances of those here for dating, who are cognatively challenged enough to risk deletion of their profile in order to be a nuisance on the forums? Their being deleted for trolling is doing those who would otherwise contact them, a favour.
Yes having a picture gives an idea of who you are talking to, as well.
Hopefully there won't be too many people faking people's pics, though. Thats my worry, personally.
The former is the purpose of the profile pic privilege. The latter, has nothing to do with this thread's topic, and is discussed in other threads quite frequently.
