Posted: 5/13/2007 2:09:09 PM | I had my hysterectomy in 1986. What we do not realise is how ill we are before we have the op as there is a gradual decline in our ill health which we do not really notice. Because I was so ill I almost died after the op, but thank goodness I recovered. For the first 3 months I thought I would never be normal again but gradually I improved and after the first 12 months I knew it was, and still is, the best thing I have ever done.
My daughter told me that this op changed me as a person and as I told her, for the first time since being 13 years old I was free of pain for most of every month.
I had both ovaries left but it has taken me 8 years, on and off, to go through the change. I was offered HRT but declined it when I read all the side effects. No thank you! and besides after years of period pain it has definately not been as bad as that.
As for the "I've put on weight since my hysterectomy" there is absolutely no need for it. It just means there are those who are not eating healthily or are using their op as an excuse for not exercising. That does not mean going to the gym but just getting up and hoovering or taking the dog for a walk is all that most girls need.
As for the sex, well from 39 (year after the op) to 59 it's been GREAT. Please may it continue!!! | |

Hysterectomy victims, yes I say victims, How do you handle the effects of a hysterectomy that totally destroys your sex drive.
I dated a woman in the early 90s who had a hysterectomy and she was nothing short of a nymphomaniac. | |

Posted: 5/21/2007 7:05:50 AM | Amen, raerae - I could have kissed my gyn when I first got to FL when he told me I was looking at a complete hysterectomy. My Dr in VA would not do because of surgical risks.
Best decision I ever made having that surgery (ended PMS too which friends and family were ever so grateful for!)

Posted: 9/14/2007 4:26:13 PM | A guy here, but with a parallel experience. I've had prostate surgery, and required help from my surgeon/urologist who is quite good. I've posted elsewhere with many of the details, so I won't go deeply into it here. But the point is that I have a good sex drive and the capability to do something about it. But it took help to get there, and some determination on my part. 
I think you need to see another gynecologist! There are things that can be done!
Your choices aren't limited to staying alone or finding an understanding partner.
Sex is a good thing, and you should be enjoying it. | |

I've suffered with female problems all my life, delivered all 3 kids early..etc..etc. Now I'm taking care of my 2 yr old grand daughter, i need to be in shape..lol. Hemoglobin went to all time low of 8.8 yeah i'd say something needs to be done. When the DR told me it's time i said "yanno that really excites me!" I think he actually blushed. I can't wait to have sex afterwards..my gosh it might be like the first time again wooohoooo!! I better not get to excited though i could loose what sex drive I have left ..lol. I hope you talk to your GYN soon, it's not fair that you suffered before your surgery and can not enjoy yourself now, I wish you the best of luck. | |

Posted: 9/14/2007 4:57:52 PM | OMG!!! I had my hysterectomy 6 years ago!!!! The best thing that ever happened!!! No more pain, no more weekly periods, don't have to worry about getting pregnant! Sex has never been better!!! You definitely need to go see another doctor!!! I am on no hormone therapy things! I lost my sex drive for about 3 months after the surgery and then all hell broke loose. Felt like I did in my 20's except didn't have the worries anymore. A few of my friends have had them and they all are so much more happier now!!! We always kid with each other that we should have done it earlier!!!!! Please go to a new Doctor, you shouldn't be experiencing what you are.... | |

Sanity, sweet sanity! The HRT scare, is it worth it? My doc, who tends to be homeopathic, gave me estradiol, a natural human estrogen. Premarin (estrogen derived from mare urine) was just too much! It is safer and does the trick! | |

And yes, I am on premarin and estratest. Very tiny amounts. Your GYN cannot "take you off". The decision is yours to make. Get back on. | |

If a woman has risk factors against continuing the HRT a physician might decide not to continue an RX but should at least discuss and explain this to the patient. | |

Not everyone can be on HRT.. I had a hysterectomy when I was 32, and was on hormone replacement therapy until I developed a blood clot in my leg and it went to the lung. (very dangerous).. I was so happy to be alive after that, but can no longer take hormones. It has not affected my sex drive as far as I can tell, although it may take a little longer to get aroused, which could be a blessing!!

The removal of the ovaries for a woman is like the removal of the testcles for a man. Sexual response will be still there, but it won't be the same. Some hard work and some chemical therapy will almost certainly be required to re-ignite this important part of your life. Be good to yourself and find a sympathetic and knowledgable doctor to help you get your sexuality back and adjust to the changes. You are worth it! | |

I finally had my hysterectomy in 2004. My husband could NOT wait for me to recover, so he could "try me out". 
I feel like a New Woman! 
I was very lucky, I was able to keep my ovaries, so no HRT for me.
Now single, I am having the time of my life. Anybody not having the time of your life, needs to revisit their doctor. | |

Ask to speak to a therapist who specializes in this area. Always talk to 2 0r even 3 to be sure you find the one that best suits you.
Women successfully go through menopause w/o losing their sexual desires so I am not sure what is going on here. Maybe consult another gyn.

Posted: 5/31/2009 5:31:11 PM | I am 52. I had a complete hysterectomy at 36. I have never had a problem with my sex drive. It is there and reviving into overdrive.
There could be multiple reasons you are having issues from hormones to mental distress. Talk to your doctor. My sister had a hysterectomy at 39 and suffered "in silence" for years (as much as one of my sisters could ever suffer in silence, ha). Her problem was she said, she didn't feel like a woman anymore which created the lack of self esteem and sexual drive. If you don't feel sexy and desirable, you damn well aren't.
Bottom line. Visit your doctor for health check up. Nothing wrong. Talk to a therapist. | |
