Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang Is the new bass player..just heard a couple of hours ago on VH1

I wonder how good Wolfgang will be. Well, most of Michael Anthony's bass playing was pretty simplistic. Still, why not get someone like Billy Sheehan? (Actually, he and DLR look A LOT alike nowadays.) Too bad Jaco Pastorius is no longer with us. Imagine him and Eddie jamming together.

I'm not a Van Halen fan, but just saw this:

NORM: Roth set to rejoin Van Halen for tour

Van Halen reunion tour, with David Lee Roth back in the fold after 22 years, is in the works, with a Las Vegas launch looking good.

A late April date at the Palms' new venue, The Pearl, is "99 percent" likely, a source said.

It would be the latest coup for Palms owner George Maloof, who will open the 2,500-seat venue with a lineup that includes Tool, Evanescence, Gwen Stefani and possibly Van Halen, all in the first month.

A 40-date tour is being discussed.

Roth fronted the band from 1974 to 1985 before going solo. He was close to rejoining about 11 years ago, but a blowup caused another rift.

Van Halen's last tour, in 2004, grossed about $40 million, with Sammy Hagar as the lead.

......... everyone has an opinion....but maybe you ought to let the huge stadiums full of people (VH fans) decide if Van Halen should be playing to huge stadiums full of people.... just like Aerosmith....Rolling stones..... etc.... everybody gets old...no one is exempt....... try watching the DVD "Live Right Here Right Now"...... that might inspire you....

Yikes! he would just die anyway from barre-chord boredom, ....

I was never a big fan, once you get passed Eddies "trick" there's isn't much substance to the tunes, Roth carried that band as far as the "rockstar" thing is concerned IMO, after he left, they all took themselves too seriously.

so true..

roth did leave the band, he took everything with him too even the drum kit from what i recall...

eddies trick, wasn't even his trick it was a standard guitar technique in the los angeles clubs in the late 70's..eddie himself has publicly stated he was the first one to the studio with his trick...

and after cutting and polishing eruption he owned it. there was 2 or 3 other bands playing the l.a. clubs when van halen was and they were all doing "you really got me" and there was a race to the studio...

bar-chord boredom!

hmmm that's harsh eddies guitar work is amazing if you look at the technical aspects of his writing more so in the haggar days one of the reasons roth was out was due to eddie having to play a half step flat for roths voice....not with sammy he tuned up to a440 and drop d and well you knows...

YES LATE

I think you are being too harsh on EDDIE

go listen to tracks like Spanish fly,Cathedral, most of the Album 'Fair Warning'

EDDIE was doing some amazing stuff,it only became old hat when you heard it a bunch of times....hind site is 20/20

Blackaces --same thing with those 3-4 other bands doing 'you real got me'
where are they,if they where just is good they would have built a career on their other tunes?
NO?

for guitar playing kids of the late 70's and 80's EDDIE was just as important as HENDRIX,or the BEATLES

I LOVE JACO-have some of his concerts live on dvd etc.............even he becomes a yawnfest after a whole album

LATE
I watched 'GENEGIS BLUES'.........good tv thanks for the recommendation

I don't think they have enough in the vaults. Remember, the average length of an album when David Lee Roth was in the band was about 32 minutes. They probably used up all their material for the album.

Maybe they were too wasted to write a lot of music.

They have tons of stuff in the vaults! Are you kidding me?

Check out this site...

http://www.vhboots.com

Trust me, they have at least one cd's worth of unreleased studio tracks. And keep in mind that they never officially released any live stuff with DLR.

Oh I found "Voodoo Queen" online. It sounds like a prototype for "Mean Street" but with a different and amazing chorus.

I was never a big fan, once you get passed Eddies "trick" there's isn't much substance to the tunes,

Oh man, I highly disagree. I could add so many songs to what guitarman did. "Little Guitars" for one is pure genius. "Atomic Punk". Hello? They were great songwriters in the metal genre. After 1984 they did go downhill pretty much though, and they begat many other bands with less talent. And of course they were better with DLR, but I'm one of those people that thought Hagar was better off with Montrose, whose debut album is one of the very best metal albums of the 70's. 32 minutes long, yet it stands 20 feet tall.

Whats it really worth to all the VH fans out there to see the 2007 version of VH with Ed,Alex, possibly DLR and 15 yr old Wolfgang Van Halen playing bass???
Lets see here,,if they charge,,???,lets say upwards of $100.00 a ticket for this train wreck,,which we all know is going to be anyway...
No Micheal Anthony...minus $25.00
Edward Van Halens giant ego, alcoholism, drugs,,minus --Priceless!!!
Alex Van Halen,,not knowing when to ****-slap his little brother back into reality,,well??
Wolfie,,trying to replicate the backing harmonies and vocals,,,,lol
Then there is the wild card,,Mr David Lee Roth!!!
I can just imagine the first time when Dave brings along the groupies and party backstage in front of Wolfgang!
How is Ed gonna handle that??
If and when VH tour this year,,Edward(MR.multi-millionaire musician) better deliver stellar, spectacular performances!

I saw a video of Eddie jamming at some guitar show last month. Lots of whammy this and feedback that..... but he looked haggard, out of it and VERY intoxicated. It was hard to watch, knowing the potential. I almost clicked off.

The studio version of Catherine is pretty good. But that could have been the work of a good editor.

40 cities.... will they even last ten?

Eddie Van Halen made a huge contribution to the history of rock.... but he looks like the rock landed on him.

I sincerely hope he finds his path again and better health. I don't want to read his obit anytime soon. I just want the dude to enjoy what he worked so hard for.

So true, so true! That's going to be one hell of an ego train wreck, but it might be one of the more spectacular ones. How many rock bands from the past have had the entire line up from their musical journey ever come together on one stage (minus the death of members) without showing some undercurrent of hostility to each other (inflamed and over blown egos)?

Well guys.. this was posted on Melodicrock.com a few days ago and yesterday.. it's not looking good:

Wed Feb 21st: VAN HALEN TOUR POSTPONED:

Yes, it is 100% true that the Van Halen 2007 tour has been indefinitely postponed. Details are a little thin on the ground and no one is talking on the record, but I did manage to talk to my contact who originally told me of the re-union plans in October last year.
Despite what little has been said publicly so far, it seems there are issues beyond paperwork and contracts that need to be ironed out. Van Halen has always been a volatile mix of personalities and 2007 is no different. Basically those involved in putting this tour together won't commit further until all issues are dealt with, hence the postponement of current plans.
I am told though, that this postponement should be just that - a temporary situation that can be sorted so that the dates that had been arranged can be re-booked and announced down the track somewhat. The band is unlikely to comment beyond the fact the tour will (at this stage) start later than originally planned.
The line-up for this tour remains Eddie, Wofgang & Alex Van Halen and frontman David Lee Roth.

For the record - here is what Pollstar has posted regarding the news:
"It's true. The Van Halen tour that was never officially announced is now officially postponed indefinitely, sources told Pollstar. The rumored tour took on an air of reality after a trade magazine announced that original singer David Lee Roth was about to sign on the dotted line, and that was soon followed by a press release via Eddie Van Halen's spokeswoman-slash-girlfriend. Unfortunately, the worldwide frenzy of a VH reunion was too good to be true, at least for the present day.
However, there was a lot of paper getting inked and Pollstar understands that a tour announcement might not have been far off."

And this forwarded to me from a regular contact:
"I work in radio and here's exactly what came across our "prep" service this morning from Premier Radio Network...
We learned last night from a source close to the band that Van Halen's reunion tour with David Lee Roth has been "indefinitely postponed." While Eddie, Alex, Dave and Eddie's son Wolfgang (replacing bassist Michael Anthony) have been rehearsing, their plans are now up in the air. We were told that when Eddie's girlfriend (and spokesperson) announced the reunion on February 2nd, there was no signed deal between the band, Roth and tour promoter Live Nation.
A Van Halen best-of highlighting the Roth years has also been scrapped by Rhino. A source at the label tells us they were unable to make a deal for the planned release.
Regardless of all this drama, Van Halen will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York on March 12th.
The last time Van Halen toured with David Lee Roth was in 1984. The last time Van Halen toured was in 2004 with Sammy Hagar.
We were unable to reach representatives for the Van Halen brothers last night. Roth's spokeswoman declined to comment."

I know this is a bit long winded, but I thought I'd pass it along, from the same website as above:

FRI Feb 23rd:

MORE GLOOM FOR VAN HALEN FANS:

Today's LA Times has covered the latest chapter in the Van Halen saga in some detail. David Lee Roth comments and plays it very diplomatically. But read this article - this (without saying so much) spells out the problem pretty clearly...more clearly than I felt comfortable to state earlier in the week.
So, read through and make your own minds up. This band most definitely has a problem and I hope for the sake of long suffering fans and those that care, things within the band are addressed and this anticipated tour can eventually take place.

For Van Halen, the stars seemed aligned for a triumphant 2007. Next month, the group will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the plan was to follow that with a summer reunion tour that would feature David Lee Roth back at the mike for the first time since the Reagan years.
But, once again, the backstage soap opera of Van Halen is the story of the day.
The Van Halen tour has been "shut down," according to a top official at Live Nation, the huge concert promoter that finally surrendered in the face of the chaos surrounding guitar hero Eddie Van Halen. Roth, meanwhile, says he is unsure whether the mercurial guitarist will even travel to New York for the Hall of Fame induction on March 12.
"We have fragile politics in Van Halen; please accept that as a partial answer," Roth said. "But I don't know if the Van Halens are going to go....I hope they do, but right now, I just don't know. Hope springs eternal."
Eddie Van Halen declined interviews through his publicist and girlfriend, Janie Liszewski. Conversations with the business team behind the tour paint a picture of a rock star who is somewhere between Axl Rose and Michael Jackson on the music industry scale of eccentric recluses. The result is that the Van Halen venture imploded before takeoff, even as the Police, the Eagles and Genesis have efficiently geared up for lucrative reunion tours.
"I cannot tell you how frustrating and completely nuts this has been," one key business figure in the tour said while asking not to be identified on the outside chance that the reunion might be salvaged. "Right now, I have to say, I don't see that happening."

It's a disheartening situation for the fans who pine for a Roth-led lineup of the iconic metal band. Among those devoted is Wolfgang Van Halen, the 15-year-old son of Eddie and, according to Roth, a key force behind the reunion.
Wolfgang, a precocious musician, was "the maestro" at the reconstituted band's lone rehearsal, picking the set list and using his iPod to remind his father of the nuances of his solos on the old albums. Wolfgang was tapped by his father to play bass on the tour too, replacing founding member Michael Anthony, a jolting choice considering the child's age and Anthony's status as one of rock's best backup singers and most relentlessly cheerful presences.

Eddie Van Halen remains, by all accounts, a gifted guitarist and rock auteur, but the decision to jettison Anthony in favor of a teenager may have been the first sign that the new enterprise was guided by creaky logic. Now all eyes will be on the Hall of Fame banquet to see who shows up, who performs and how Roth interacts with old rival Sammy Hagar, the man who replaced him as lead singer in 1985 and who will be inducted as an equal.
On Valentine's Day, when the tour still looked viable, Roth was all smiles as he sat down for an interview in a bungalow at Chateau Marmont. The 52-year-old was wearing a snappy black suit and the short haircut that has recently replaced his old pro-wrestler cut. He still flashes a karate smile, but the singer seems calmer and more focused than in years past. The reason, he said, is that he's fresh from working as an emergency medical technician in New York. It's a longtime dream of his to be a paramedic, and the unglamorous gurney and rubber-glove duty humbled him, he said.
"I was working in neighborhoods that were almost exclusively black and Spanish-speaking, so only maybe twice out of 200 clients was I recognized.... I was joking about this in the truck on New Year's Eve, which was my last shift I was working in Brooklyn, down in Coney Island I said that I've been in more project apartments than Jay-Z and Diddy combined."
Roth was the rock frontman on top of the world when he went solo, but as Mick Jagger and Robert Plant also learned fans treasure him more when he was side-by-side with an equal on guitar. Roth seemed like a vainglorious sex panther in Van Halen, but on his own he often came off as a relentless jive salesman whose only product was his own past. Roth is still "on" all the time he calls it his "incandescent personality" but lately he comes off as the voice of reason, a pretty stunning change.

That, and the financial prospects, made him jump at the chance to work with Eddie Van Halen again. Of the old days, he says: "There was a lot of sparks and a lot of tension, like your favorite movies, especially those underground ones.... There was a lot of anxiety too, but it was about ambition, not ego."
Roth was optimistic that the band would follow up the tour with new music; he also pointed to the cache of 1996 recordings that he did with Van Halen during an earlier reunion flirtation. Now it appears the entire output of this new reunion was a single rehearsal in January and a photo shoot with Roth and Eddie, Wolfgang and Alex Van Halen. Alex is Eddie's older brother and the band's drummer.
"Hearing it again, that's an elixir.... What we sell is that we make all the guys feel young and invincible and all the girls feel young and desirable," Roth said. "I watched it happen to everybody that was listening in the studio."
Van Halen was a monster of rock and, for a time, arguably the biggest band in the world. According to the Recording Industry Assn. of America, Van Halen albums have shipped more than 56.5 million copies, which is more than the career totals of U2, Celine Dion, Shania Twain or Prince.
Roth said that he and Anthony will be in New York for the Hall of Fame, as will Hagar, the affable "red rocker."

Last month, Hagar publicly chided Eddie Van Halen for taking his son on tour. He also added that "the guy is a genius, but he's just out there and it's hard for people around him."
In 2004 and 2005, Van Halen toured with Hagar and, according to Pollstar, grossed $55 million playing arenas. But Hagar said that Eddie Van Halen was drinking heavily and, on some nights, it showed. In Chicago, Eddie stumbled throughout the set and, at one point, quit playing and sacked out, telling the crowd: "I done run outta gas."
There were tender scenes too. With the tour winding down in Los Angeles, for instance, Wolfgang came on stage at the Staples Center to play. The body language of father and son made it clear that they reveled in the shared spotlight. Roth said that that affection led to the hopes for the Van Halen reunion.
"I'm going to put some words in Ed's mouth," Roth said. "Whatever explanation he may give about having his son in the band, I'm going to superimpose: He wants to play with his kid while he's still at the top of his game and able to ... and that's also the same reason I'm in the band in its current configuration. No questions asked. He said, 'Hey, c'mon up the hill and make some music.' I said, 'Great. I'd love to play with you while you're still on the top of your game.' "
Roth smiled, but a moment later, when he was asked about what he feared most about the reunion, he didn't hesitate with his answer: "The two worst words in the English lexicon are 'band meeting.' "

that doesn't really come as a suprise.

Eddie's pretty much wrecked his life with substance abuse. When I first heard of this tour, I doubted that it would happen.

EVH has ruined this band,,with his huge ego,,pettyness,,he has screwed up all of the chances to get VH back together!!!
Edward needs an ass-kicking or an intervention,,plain and simple!!!
Alex Van Halen(and a few guitar magazine editors) need to stop swinging from Edwards nutsack,,grow a spine and act like an older brother should!!!

. Its interesting to hear peoples opinions here.... because i saw van halen in Edmonton in 2004 and, although I'm a die hard VH fan.... I was not that impressed by eddies performance that night.... It appeared to me he was pissed out of his tree... I didn't like his solo performance... not very melodic at all......... and he got a little rude with the crowd at the end when Alex didnt get as much applause as Eddie would heve liked...... I too would like to see Edward Van Halen clean up his act, get healthy and make some great music..... !!!...... he has much to celebrate re their success... and take a few lessons from bands like Aerosmith on how to last in the business........ and that whole business with Wolfy is a bad idea.... let Wolfgang find his own music career...with his peers....

wow....I just logged into this thread...

I can't believe the negative responses...would this be happening if eddie had gone the way of SRV? is it collective envy? waddup people....if his "licks" are "tricks" he at least innovated them...

I saw eddie with gary chiconne (spelling?) tour in toronto...front row...he was awesome. by the way if we are going to be negative let's at least bring up front men who rode on his coat tails. Sammy is silly without van halen (not counting his stint with montrose...but then he hadn't delveloped his massive ego yet). and speaking of drunks!!! I guess it's ok for sammy and david lee roth to be total substance abusers...but eddie...whoa. Let's all agree that he is also human.

No, because if Eddie had gone the way of Stevie Ray, Eddie wouldn't currently be alive as a sad, pathetic, brain-dead, burn-out.

Vaughn died tragically at the peak of his talent. Eddie Van Halen let his talent waste away.

Sammy is silly without van halen
As far as I know, Sammy Hagar has manged to record a few albums since Van Halen, and still tours regularly. The remaining 2 members of Van Halen are unable to sober up enough to play live anywhere, or record anything.

While I'll admit that Roth was likely the more talented of the Van Halen singers, I've seen Sammy play live, with the Waboritas, and his live show's incredible.
Van Halen's live show, is non-existant today.
