My friend had an old hairstyle and didn't want to change it because people used to compliment her on it. The operative phrase here is "used to". The hardest part is finding a hairstylist you trust who can keep you up to date and is willing to try new things.
No doubt!!!! My hairstylist has actually told people "no" who come in and ask to keep their bad poofy 1987 hair or get mullets. She refuses to do it as it would give the salon and her a bad name for not cutting modern, good-looking hairstyles.

I still look at old Julia Roberts flicks like Mystic Pizza and Pretty Woman and think she is lovely. But that is my generation.
I love that movie and I love the look. I still love the 80's hair band thingie and even sport a Farrah-wannabee-do from time to time. Like it or not, it's back, folks!!! Don't worry too much about the 80s, it's generally a 30 year turnaround, which means the 70s are heading our way...now won't that be fun??? (I'm all for the hair-dos (or dont's) but if someone wants me to wear tie-die ~ I'm going to scream.)

Then I show the thread to my friends and we have a good laugh about everyone getting so upset and thinking it's actually a serious question
Just out of curiosity Jazztheif you didn't happen to show your friends your profile before the giggles started..and quick question..Your mother, is she 50.

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 8:14:04 AM | Nope, my mom isn't 50 yet and she certainly isn't a housewife with bad, poofy hair and my dad hasn't left her alone to raise 3 kids either and yes she has had all 3 kids by the same man. Just because one is a mom, nearing 50 , doesn't mean they have to be stuck with a bad hairdo and not look good. My mom has access to a good hairstylist who would NEVER cut her hair to look like some 80s metal biker chick.
And no my friends don't laugh at my profile, they are a little more open minded and modern than that.

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 8:31:26 AM | | Last time i checked the mags and fashion shows ,the latest trends seem to be a going back to the later 80s style of dress and hair/makeup looks -big hair ( not frizzed unkept, but well blown out and styled) is the trend for this year! . I am old enough to remember the 80s and 90s and as a makeup artist I can tell you ,blue eyeshadow if applied right looks stunning ,Not everyone should wear the MAC brown look.THey are not interested in what looks good on a women ,just how much of it they can sell .Im sorry it will make you look tired and is really only suited to warm tones ( which 90% of the population is not) . I am glad the trend has gone back a bit to it as that that was times when women really looked like women. | |

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 8:41:12 AM | the mullet should remain in the 80's
i am going to get crit for this.. pacing into the american lions den and 'proding you all with a big stick' but anywho take it lightly its not a racial assault on the very essence of your being
anyway the topic- i watch ricky lake/ jerry/ maury in the early hours while trying to be inspired for school work and all i can say is that the general American public have some shocking hair
we have an advert on british tv set in the deep south of thr US mocking the hair on some people.. makes me laugh
shocking hair and jumpers (sweaters) sort it out!!!! the back comb and set curls should have died long before new kids on the block split. thank god i was born in 1985 and dont have the embarassment of past photographs.

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 8:53:20 AM | OK...here's my contribution...being in the beauty industry, here's what I see. So often women try to copy what is in style or cool whether it be with clothes or hair but come on Jazzthief...not everyone has a perfect little oval face and big eyes! Not everyone has a perfect figure! Most often women with big round faces, who don't happen to have oval shaped heads, need a little height to balance it out. Not everyone can wear the poker straight hair and look fabulous! What it ends up doing is emphasizing the fact that the person has a huge round face! Not everyone wants their less attractive features emphasized! Guys for example, who still like to wear their hair long, nine times out of ten, it's because they have big ears and don't like to advertise the fact, hence the dated haircut. Most of us are aware that really short skirts, look the most attractive on a tall slim girl with great legs. If a girl who is short and extremely overweight wants to be in style, presuming she is young, does that mean she should still wear the short skirt even though it looks terrible? If she does, well that's her choice but I think most of us would agree, it's just not attractive! As for the dated frizzy perms, I'm with you there, but once again in fairness, some women don't like to advertise that they have thin stringy hair..so like to have a perm to give the illusion that their hair is thicker. However it is no longer necessary for women to have frizzy hair, if your a professional, you can give a client a beautiful body perm! That being said, it is amazing, how some styles keep coming back. I have a girlfriend who loves retro and decorates her condo in this style. Personally I hate it! I shake my head in disbelief sometimes when I see young girls with really large noses get a ring put in! OMG why oh why would you want to advertise that you have a really large nose? Presumably it all boils down to one's self-confidence and perception! | |

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 9:00:00 AM | haha get with the times? The times is any hairstyle. But although I grew up as a teen in the 80's, I have to say the music was fun and good but there should have been a Police force called the fashion Police...my god take a look at some epidoes of 21 Jump Street...oh my god..or the movie Pretty In Pink...hahaha...that era the fashion should have been oulawed.. | |

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 9:15:12 AM | Fashion is a $$$ making industry -- from hair to shoes to clothing. Wear the hair that you want. I do.
I shall be me, you be you And if you cannot be who you really are, then ... FU C K u! LOL

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 9:53:02 AM | interlude solo -- EXACTLY. So you being a stylist, you would choose something that would suit your client, while looking modern... whatever.... right?
DO you honestly think a big, frizzed out, giant bangs, bad perm hair looks good on ANYONE?
Like you said, if you have thinner hair, you can get a wonderful perm and look great, right?

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 12:10:52 PM | I was leavin the house one day to go to high school; my foster ma asked me what I did to my hair; I told her I just teased it a little; she said, "teased it girl? looks like you drove it insane!" Rock on class of 86
oh, and thank you ladies (gallivanting and texasbaby) for the kind words; I do try to put my best Pat Benatar look forward whilst spending time with the male gender...

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 4/20/2006 1:11:11 PM | Clarification...
All I'm trying to say is that there are people out there who don't give a rats a-- about fashion! In many ways, I admire these people! They are not fashion slaves! I think we can agree that the fashion industry makes tons of $$$ telling people how they should dress and look! I for one, even though I am in the beauty industry, abhor some of the ridiculous ways, we as stylists are instructed to manipulate clients to get more cash out of them. This is constantly encouraged at conferances, how do get the client eating out of your hand and coming back regularly spending big bucks! I can remember a time when if you had more than one color in your hair, people would say,"what happened to you hair?" Who ------ it up? Now the more colors...the better!! From what I observe..you have people that simply don't give their hair a second thought..I've even had female clients brag they only go to hairdressers every two years. At the same time this is the same women who has been back and forth to Europe a few times. She would rather spend her money on travel. Simply different priorities..I have no problem with that Some people that aren't aware of their image, is perhaps because their wondering how they are going to feed their babies, buy their expensive pack of smokes and really don't want to fork out $50.00 bucks for a styled haircut. I am certainly not promoting perms...I have talked many clients with thick beautiful hair into modern hairstyles rather than perm it. They of course, thank me later & say OMG how could I have walked around with that nasty perm! However once again, I have to reiterate not everyone is born with beautiful thick glorious hair like the commercials suggest. Some people out there would still prefer to get a BODY perm than walk around with baby fine hair stuck to their heads. And no I certainly am not promoting big 4 inch high teased hair..just sometimes modifications are necessary! Oh I can't tell you the number of young girls that I've seen destroy their hair trying to take the curl out, if it's naturally curly! All in the name of fashion! I am so happy to have my own business now and not have to be BS people as most salon owners insist that you do, so that they get make the CHA-CHING!! Some people are blessed with beautiful hair and very little is needed to maintain it.

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 6/8/2006 12:06:14 PM | | A better question might be... why do you think that 80's hair is not cool. I mean, does it really matter enough that you might start a discussion thread on it. Personally, I don't believe there is such a thing as fashion anymore. People should be and in fact seem to be wearing everything and anything they choose to. Fashion today means, everything and anything, and hairstyle definitely falls into that category. So, let's just accept that acceptance is the key. Let's just let people dress and style their hair as they wish. | |

| Why do people think 80s hair is still cool? Posted: 6/8/2006 12:34:39 PM | hehe, this is funny because i JUST posted something about how girls cannot look past a guys hair, i have long hair and receive a lot of crap from both guys and girls who think i should 'get with the now' a relationship, i believe, should be based on a little more than what a person looks like, if their comfortable with their '80s hairdo' or their 'out of style image' then thats that, it's how they'd like to look. maybe people should be a little less shallow 'for real' | |
